conditions before taking up working piles.
⮚ Based on the importance of the individual structure, the critical piles to be
installed first shall be identified by the Planning engineer.
⮚ The driving sequence shall not cause any upheaval of the ground and should try to
reduce any unusual soil resistance to rest of the pile driving.
⮚ The rig movement sequence shall be planned by the Piling engineer in
consultation with the Planning engineer.
⮚ No pile shall be driven near to the recently casted pile, a minimum of 4D spacing
needs to be maintained.
⮚ The piles shall be installed in such a sequence that carrying capacity of previously
installed pile is not reduced.
⮚ In a large group of piles, the sequence of pile driving is such that the piles are
driven from one end to other end `or’ from centre to periphery.
⮚ The planned sequence shall be marked on the drawing.

⮚ The rig movement sequence marked on the drawing shall be given to Surveyor
prior to start of the work.

4) The shoe shall be co-axial with steel casing.

PILE CUSHION / DOLLY (Driving):-

1) A suitable cushion either wooden or nylon material needs to be used. In case
of wooden dolly, proper care needs to be taken for immediate replacement
once it damaged /or evidence of combustion.

7.0 EXECUTION:-
1) The steel tube is driven by means of driving at the tube head with a
mechanical hydraulic hammer guided on the leader of piling rig to the final
depth of pile.
2) Piles shall be installed as accurately as possible according to the drawing.
3) The single piles or piles in two pile group shall install with a greater care.
4) The allowable deviations of piles from their position are as follows:

− For piles in group : 75 mm or D/6 whichever is less.

❖ Where “D” is the nominal diameter of pile

− Piles shall not be out of plumb by more than 1.5 % of pile length.

5) Before starting the driving, the casing shall be checked for verticality.
6) Driving shall be continuous.
7) The final depth has been reached according after driving the pile in the end
bearing layer/designed set value is achieved.
8) In case the tube floats away during driving an obstacle is hit the floating can
be averted, if the obstacle is just minor, in all other cases it is necessary to stop
driving and to replace the tube again.
9) All the operations during driving shall be noted down and the same shall be
submitted to Planning engineer as per driving record on completion of pile.
10) Driving of casing shall be observed continuously for checking casing joints
welding.
11) The number of blows required to penetrate for every 1m depth needs to be
recorded.
12) The pile needs to be terminated based on approved termination criteria (Set
criteria) of piles. It needs to be ensured in all piles.

8.0 REINFORCEMENT CAGE PREPARATION & LOWERING:-

1) The piling engineer will check the reinforcement cage before lowering into the
bore as per drawing and fill the reinforcement record format to submit to the
planning engineer for client approval.

❖ For tying and binding 16-18 gauge black iron wire to be used as per
specification.

2) To avoid distortion of the reinforcement cage during lifting additional Stiffener

rings rings in-between the center to center of the required stiffener as per
drawing to be provided and laps shall be properly welded.
3) Check for cover blocks to the reinforcement. A minimum of three nos. at
every 2 m interval is required
4) The pile bore will be free from water, brickbats or debris. This will be checked
before lowering the reinforcement.
5) Reinforcement cage should not be dropped while lowering down.
6) The reinforcement cage should be kept hanging using the cage wire at such
level that the tip of the cage is 75 mm above the pile shoe.
7) During extraction of casing this wire rope shall be observed to find the lifting
of cage.

9.0 PILE CONCRETE :-

1) The grade of concrete shall be as specified in the specification.
2) Water cement ratio shall not exceed 0.5.
3) After the installation of the reinforcement cage concrete is poured with the
skip/chute cart into the tube until the tube is filled to the required level in one
or two stages.
4) Also before initial withdrawal of the casing tube, adequate quantity of concrete
shall be placed into the casing to counter the hydrostatic pressure at pile tip.
5) The extracting gear will be attached to the casing tube and the tube is slowly
withdrawn in stages as necessary, allowing the concrete to issue from the
lower end progressively. Forced downwards and outwards by its own weight,
the concrete completely fills the hole made by the tube and penetrates into all
voids at the sides of the hole, if any. This is further ensured by tamping the
casing with the hammer during the casing tube extraction process. This also
ensures proper consolidation of concrete in the pile shaft.
6) Concrete shall be casted minimum up to 1000mm above cut off.

The following points shall be taken care :-

1) Concreting should start as soon as possible after the driving is completed.
2) Pile concreting shall be uninterrupted. Only fresh concrete shall be used.
Ensure the equipment / materials available are sufficient for a continuous
concreting.
3) The slump of concrete shall be 150 mm to 200 mm.
4) Concrete shall be mixed thoroughly so that no / minimum segregation takes
place due to pouring of concrete from top of casing.
5) Reinforcement / concrete shall not get lifted along with the casing.
6) Admixtures shall be used after approval from clients.

7) In some circumstances, some soil-layers are so soft, that driving during

extraction occurs floating away of concrete in this layer. In those cases the
tube is extracted just by pulling, without using the hammer in these layers.
8) In case where cut-off level is well below the working level, ensure the
following:
⮚ Where cut-off level is less than 1.5 m below working level, the
concrete shall be cast to a minimum of 600 mm above cut-off level.
⮚ For each additional 0.3 m increase in depth of cut-off level, an
additional coverage of 50 mm shall be allowed.
9) Concreting shall be continued till pile reaches it required level above cut-off
level. (i.e., 1000 mm above cut-off level)
10) The balance depth between ground level and top of concrete shall be filled up
with sand.
11) Check the volume of concrete placed for initially cast piles and obtain average
figure to check for undue variation in concrete consumption for subsequent
piles.

❖ Installation sequence of DCIS piles (General) :-

10. DOCUMENTATION :-
1) The No. of blows recorded for every 1m penetration from start to end of the
pile, and also the set value achieved, Cage reinforcement details, Concrete
consumed, Slump of the concrete etc. for all individual piles will be recorded
