CE-308 DOSS (Theory) Assignment No.

CE 308- Design of Steel Structures

Session 2020, Semester - Spring 2023

Assignment No 2 (Theory)
NOTE: This assignment covers CLO-3 upto Cognitive domain level 3. The problems have registration
number based calculations. Please see the following for the value of R to be considered in problems:

N = 1000; N0= Registered number of the student

R = N – N0, a parameter to get numerical data for the problems

Design of Tension Members

Problem 1: Select a W310 section to resist a 5/4R kN service tensile dead load and a 7/4R kN
service tensile live load using A36 steel and AISC LRFD specification. The member is to be
10m long and is to be connected through its flanges only with at least three 20mm rivets in
each line. Assume that there can be as many as four rivet holes at any one cross-section (two
in each flanges).

Problem 2: Select the lightest possible single angle section for a 3m long tension member to
carry a service tensile load of 0.2R dead and 0.3R live load in kN. The member is to be
connected through one leg only with 20mm diameter rivets (at least four in a longitudinal
line). Assume that only one rivet is to be located at any one cross-section. Use AISC LRFD
specification and A36 steel.

Problem 3: A 6m long member consists of a pair of lightest equal leg angles placed back-to-
back with fillet welded end connections. Assume that gusset plate thickness is 10mm. The
service dead load tensile force is R/4 kN while it is estimated that the service live load force
may be applied to a maximum of 20,000 times and may vary from a compression of R/3 kN
to a tension of R/2 kN. Design the member under stress reversal condition using A709M
Grade 345 steel and AISC LRFD specification.

Problem 4: A W310 shape is to be selected to support a factored tensile load of 2.7R kN. The
member is 9m long having two holes for 18mm bolts in each flange. The maximum
slenderness ratio is to be kept at 200, which is not an AISC LRFD requirement. Use A709M
Grade 345 steel.

Problem 5: Select a lightest American Standard Channel that will safely support a tensile
dead load of R/2.5 kN and a tensile live load of R/2 kN. The member is 5m long and is
assumed to have one hole for an 18mm bolt through each flange. Use U=0.85, A36 steel and
AISC LRFD specifications.

Problem 6: Select using LRFD approach, the lightest W section available to support working
tensile loads of TD = R/1.75 kN and TW = 1.3R kN. The member is to be 6m long and is
assumed to have two lines of holes for 20mm Ø bolts in each flange. There will be at least
three holes in each line 76mm on centre. Use A36 steel.

Problem 7: Select using LRFD approach, the lightest W section that will resist a service
tensile load, TD = R/1.3 kN and TL = 0.95R kN. The member is to be 7.6m long and is
assumed to have two lines of holes in each flange and two lines of holes in the web. Assume
there are four bolts in each line 76mm on centre. All holes are for 22mm Ø bolts. Use A992 –
Grade 50 steel.

Problem 8: A welded tension member is to consist of two channels placed 400mm back-to-
back with the flanges turned out. Select the channels for a factored tensile load of 4R kN
using A36 steel and the AISC LRFD specifications. The member is to be 30m long.

Design of Compression Members

Problem 9: Design a bridge truss member (K=1) that is 3.5m long using A36 steel and LRFD
specifications for stress reversal conditions. The loading conditions are as follows:

PD= 80 kN (C), PL= 270 kN (C), TL= 270 kN (T).

Select the most economical double angle section with 15 mm thick gusset plate, welded
connections but snug bolted stay plates for the member.

Problem 10: Design a bridge truss member (K=1) that is 4.0m long using A992 steel and
LRFD specifications under stress reversal conditions. The loading conditions are:
PD= 90 kN (C), PL= 290 kN (C), TL= 300 kN (T).
Select the lightest W-section with welded connections for the member.
Problem 11: Select the most economical double standard channels placed face-to-face, using
A36 steel for a welded compression member, according to LRFD approach. The length of the
member is 7.5m and the maximum compressive factored force is 3R kN. The distance
between centroids of the channels is to be 300mm. Design the section, end plates, and the
lacing system. K = 1.0.

Problem 12: Design the column C1 to be used in a single storey building, the plan of which
is shown in Figure Problem 12. The dead load of roof beams is to be taken as 1.5 kN/m2 and
live load is to be taken as 3.0 kN/m2. Calculate the column load. Select the lightest W-section
using A992 steel and AISC LRFD specifications for the column. The column height is
R/180m, K value is 1.3 in the major direction and is 1.0 in the minor direction.
