Salt Analysis Procedure

This document outlines procedures to identify the cation and anion present in a simple salt. It describes 14 preliminary tests involving observing color changes, solubility, and gas evolution from heating the salt alone or with reagents. Key observations that could indicate the presence of particular cations like Pb2+, Cu2+, and Fe2+ or anions like chloride, carbonate, and nitrate are described. Taking sodium carbonate extracts of the salt and performing additional confirmatory tests with reagents can further identify anions like sulfate, phosphate, and acetate. The goal is to systematically test the salt's properties and reactivity to deduce its ionic components through inference from the experimental results.
