Horticulture Week 3

Jhoven A. Dimapilis discusses pre-cultural practices for horticulture in week 3, including: 1. Conducting market surveys to understand buyer standards and develop attractive marketing strategies. 2. Using crop planting calendars to plan activities, costs, labor, and credit requirements. 3. Collecting soil samples every 1-2 years to assess soil fertility and determine proper fertilizer use. 4. Composting animal manure to produce organic fertilizer that adds nutrients, organic matter, and reduces volume and pathogens. 5. Using high quality seeds and equipment to help ensure crops can be sold at expected prices.

Horticulture

Week 3

Learning task 1:

Pre -Cultural Practices

1. Farmers conduct market survey

- This Survey for me is very important since this way they can improve and develop their
products, process, quality, and market that will fit the Buyers standards. And market survey
research helps businesses gain critical feedback from their target customer. This information
offers marketing and business leaders factual-based data to guide and build an attractive
advertising or sales strategy. I also think that this market survey is affordable and reliable way to
gather information from your target markets. Affordable Since it can be done by anyone
whether it’s someone who’ll just start a business or someone who don’t have experience. And
reliable since it is a direct conduct of survey from buyers/costumers or market.
2. Crop Planting Calendar

- I think it is necessary to schedule your production so that you can achieve your goals
and priorities of your market. Using a crop calendar allows better planning of all farm
activities and the cost of production. The crop calendar allows a farmer to: plan for input
purchase and use, develop cash flow budget for year, determine need credit and period
requirement, determine labor requirements and plan for peak usage times, organize contractors
for land preparation and harvesting. The advantage of doing and using this will have a great and
enormous contribution to everyone who’s on this field.

3. Collecting Soil Samples

- I also pretty much think that undergoing to soil testing at least once into two years is a must
since the goal of soil testing is to provide an accurate assessment of the soil's fertility to make
fertilizer recommendations. Which can help with the successfulness of your planting.
And with the increasing awareness of fertilizer effects on environmental quality, soil tests also
can be used to determine where fertilizers or manure should not be applied.

4. Manure Preparation through Composting

- It’s good since composting animal manure makes it a better fertilizer. fundamental in
maintaining the soil fertility and decreasing nutrient losses. Compost is an organic fertilizer it
adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil. In order to quickly supply a crop with the required
nutrients, a chemical fertilizer may be needed. And Composting is an effective manure
management tool that reduces volume, kills pathogens and weed seeds.

5. Quality Seed/Planting Materials

- I think that using the best quality of seeds and equipment is the best thing we can use to be
assured that our products can be sell for a price in our expectations. And Seed or planting
materials of a crop or a plant is a very important component of crop production as good seed
interacts with the good environment around it and determines the health of the crop or plant. If
the environment is conducive and the seed is poor, production is likely to be less.
