Some facts about hurricanes and typhoons:

• Although they are similar in that both are types of cyclones, there’s a difference between a hurricane and a typhoon.
The former is usually found in the Atlantic Ocean while
the latter occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.

• The hurricane season in the Atlantic starts on June 1 and finishes on November 30.

• A hurricane warning is issued 24 hours before a hurricane is expected to strike.

• 2005 was a record year for hurricanes in the Atlantic – there were 15 of them during the season.

Text 2

Years ago, back in August 1992, we were visiting our friend, Debbie, in Florida when we heard on the radio that a tropical
storm was going to hit the East Coast. Because Debbie’s town was not in the direct path of the hurricane, she did not want
to leave her home. Although my wife and I were really frightened, we still didn’t want to leave Debbie on her own, so we
secured the house and went shopping for food, water and medicine.

Soon the electricity was cut off as a result of the strong winds damaging the power lines. With the wind came some heavy
rain, but then, suddenly, the sky cleared and the wind dropped. Debbie explained that it was because we were right in the
centre of the hurricane, which meant that there was still some extreme weather ahead of us. She was right. It was another
six hours before it was safe to go outside.
