1. What is the average weight? Find the median and mode.

● Mean - 142.93
● Median (for an even set of data) - 143
● Mode - 145

C. Answer the following problems:

1. Lyka’s grades for four quizzes were 85, 78, 80 and 82. If she desires a mean
grade of 85 in 5 quizzes, what grade must she get in the 5th quiz?

● Required Average: 85
● Let the required grade be “x”
○ Average = Sum of n numbers / n
■ 85 = (85 + 78 + 80 + 82 + x) / 5
■ 85 = (325 + x) / 5
■ 425 = 325 + x
■ 425 - 325 = x
■ 100 = x
● So this means that Lyka needs to get a perfect grade on the 5th Quiz so that
she could get an average grade of 85.

2. The mean of eight numbers is 52. Four of the numbers are 36, 40, 41 and 53.
What is the sum of the other 4 numbers?

● Average: 52
● 36, 40, 41, 53, w, x, y, z
● Let “w” be the 1st missing number
● Let “x” be the 2nd missing number
● Let “y” be the 3rd missing number
● Let “z” be the 4th missing number
○ Solve for w
■ (36 + 40 + 41 + 53 + w) / 5 = 52

■ 36 + 40 + 41 + 53 + w = 260
■ w = 260 - 53 - 41 - 40 - 36
■ w = 90
○ Solve for x
■ (36 + 40 + 41 + 53 + 90 + x) / 6 = 52
■ 36 + 40 + 41 + 53 + 90 + x = 312
■ x = 312 - 90 - 53 - 41 - 40 - 36
■ x = 52
○ Solve for y
■ (36 + 40 + 41 + 52 + 53 + 90 + y) / 7 = 52
■ 36 + 40 + 41 + 52 + 53 + 90 + y = 364
■ y = 364 - 90 - 53 - 52 - 41- 40 - 36
■ y = 52
○ Solve for z
■ (36 + 40 + 41 + 52 + 52 + 53 + 90 + z) / 8 = 52
■ 36 + 40 + 41 + 52 + 52 + 53 + 90 + z = 416
■ z = 416 - 90 - 53 - 52 - 52 - 41 - 40 - 36
■ z = 52
○ Sum of the other 4 numbers
■ 52 + 52 + 52 + 90 = 246

3. Denver recorded his traveling time (from home to school) for 14 days. Here
are the results in minutes: 20, 30, 33, 31, 19, 46, 32, 33, 31, 45, 22, 33, 40, 33.
What is Denver’s average time for traveling? Median? Mode?

● Get the 3 Measures of Central Tendency

○ Mean
■ (19 + 20 + 22 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 32 + 33 + 33 + 33 + 33 + 40 +
45 + 46) / 14
■ Average = 32

○ Median (for an even set of data)

■ (32 + 33) / 2
■ Median = 32.5

○ Mode
■ Mode = 33

4. Find the mean score of students whose scores in the Statistics assessment are
given in the following table: (grouped data)

SCORES 1-5 6 - 10 11 - 15 16 - 20 21 - 25

No. of
1 4 8 5 2
Students

Score Number of Students Midpoint (of the score) Midpoint x Frequency

1-5 1 3 (3)(1) = 3

6-10 4 8 (8)(4) = 32

11-15 8 13 (13)(8) = 104

16-20 5 18 (18)(5) = 90

21-25 2 23 (23)(2) = 46

SUM = 20 SUM = 275

● Average for Grouped Data

○ (Sum of the products of Midpoint & Frequency) / (Sum of Frequencies)

○ 275 / 20
