Newspaper and other paper products collected for recycling from Palm Beach County residents are
sorted at the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County’s Materials Recycling Facility. Once
the paper is sorted, it is baled and loaded onto trailer trucks that transport it to paper manufacturing
mills where it is recycled.

At the mill, the paper is loaded onto a conveyor line which moves the paper along and drops it into a
pulper (a machine filled with water that has steel blades on the bottom). The soaked paper is torn apart
by the rotating blades and becomes slurry. Detergents are added to the slurry to remove the ink from
the fibers and chemicals may also be added to whiten the fiber. The next stage in the paper recycling
process is to remove as much water as possible from the fibers. The slurry is placed between two fabric
belts which removes some of the water. Then the slurry continues on the conveyor until it comes to
steel rollers. At this point, the rollers squeeze out even more water. Afterwards the conveyor belt carries
the paper to numerous large cylinders that are heated. When the paper goes on the cylinder, it begins
to dry. The paper again passes through another set of steel rollers which smooths it out. Finally, the
paper goes to the winder, which is a machine that cuts the paper in specified sizes, and then rolls it onto
cardboard tubes.
