Past Continuous

The document provides an overview of the past continuous tense in English, including its formation, usage, and examples. It explains that the past continuous tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing or in progress at a specific time in the past. It contrasts the past continuous with the simple past tense, noting that the past continuous implies the action started before and may have continued after another past action or time. The document provides examples of using the past continuous for background details, describing the length of an action, and showing overlapping or interrupted past actions. It concludes by reminding readers to check the activities folder for additional exercises.

Usage of Past Continuous
1. The action in the past continuous starts before and
often continues after the other shorter action or
time.
○ At three o'clock, I was working. (I started
before three o'clock and finished after three
o'clock.)
2. Story background:
○ The sun was shining when I woke up this
morning.
3. Length of an action:
○ At sunset, Mike was walking in the park.
4. Overlapping Actions (Interruption or at the same
time):
○ I was watching TV while you were playing with
the dog.
Simple Past & Continuous
When we use these two tenses together, it shows us that the past simple action
happened in the middle of the past continuous action, while it was in progress.

● While I was studying, I suddenly felt sleepy.

Can you see a difference in the meaning of these two sentences?

● When the guests arrived, Jane was cooking dinner.

● When the guests arrived, Jane cooked dinner.

In the first one, Jane started cooking dinner before the guests arrived. We know that
because it uses the past continuous. In the second sentence, the guests arrived first
and then Jane started cooking.
