Grade 12 Biology Unit 4 Outline: Homeostasis: Name

This document outlines the unit plan for a Grade 12 Biology class on homeostasis. The unit covers key topics like maintaining internal balance, homeostasis and feedback mechanisms, thermoregulation, water balance, the excretory system, hormones, the nervous system, and stress. Suggested homework includes reading from the textbook and online simulations or videos for each section. The homework is designed to help students better prepare for lessons and tests through strategies like pre-reading and self-testing without references.

Unit 4 Outline: Homeostasis

Big Ideas:
 Organisms have strict limits on the internal conditions that they can tolerate.
 Systems that maintain homeostasis rely on feedback mechanisms.
 Environmental factors can affect homeostasis.

Homework Tips
 Do homework a day in advance of a lesson. It will better prepare you for the lesson, and if you had any questions
about the homework, you can ask them during class as the topic comes up.
 When doing homework, avoid going straight to the question, and then searching the text for key-words to find the
answer. Instead, use a pre-reading strategy like the multi-pass strategy:
Pass 1 – Read the titles and subtitles of the section
Pass 2 – Read the bold terms, get to know the language of the section
Pass 3 – Observe the diagrams and read captions to get a picture of the section in your head
Pass 4 – Read the summary for the most important parts
Pass 5 – Read the text. Really. Read the text. It’s a great book, and someone spent a lot of time writing it just
for you.
Questions – When you are finally ready to answer the questions, avoid looking at the text when answering
them. Research has shown that the more often you practice testing yourself, the better you are at tests.
