GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICUM-INTERNSHIP

Objectives of the Practicum:

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Financial Management and
Human Resource Management take part in a 6-unit practicum for one semester in their final year or
last semester prior to graduation.
The practicum course is designed to exposure students to their professional role by
completing the required 600 hours in the field or agency partner. This course is designed to promote
and support student learning, personal development and professional practice. This course involves a
hands-on work at with an industry partner through which the student develops knowledge of
professional practice and behaviors in the workplace. Placements are usually unpaid work, with the
student being mentored by skilled staff, and the replacement linked to agreed-upon learning
competencies.

Preparation for the First Day of Work

 Get your endorsement letter from the Program Head Office together with your co-practicum.
 Bring the letter of endorsement together with your other requirements like copy of application
letter, resume, parent’s consent, medical certificate, insurance to your place of work.
 Go to your place of work together with co-practicum as soon as you get your endorsement.
 Ask the security guard or an employee if you can see the manager. Introduce yourself to the
manager, give him/her the endorsement letter and other requirements and explain that you a
PSU CUYO BSBA practicum student assigned to their company.
 Be prepared to be interviewed by the manager. Typical questions are about your personal
background, your skills and work experience, why you chose your major field, why you
preferred to enroll in Business Administration, personal news about the Program, or PSU
faculty and staff.
 Answer the manager’s questions confidently; be respectful, but do not be shy, look at him/her
when answering.
 You may be asked to take a typing test. Show that you know how to use a computer or an
adding machine, etc.
 Ask the manager what day and time you should report. Ask about location of the employee
entrance and the company log book or biometrics. Ask if you need a special ID to show to the
security guard until they recognize you.
 When you are introduced to your supervisor and your co-workers, address them as “Sir” or
“Ma’am”. If they ask you to use their first name or nickname instead, begin to do so
immediately. If you are uncomfortable with this, call them “Manang/Manong” or their first
name. It is rude to be formal with them if they asked you to address them informally.
Office Etiquette

Pointers for a successful practicum experience:

 Report on time for work, and log the correct time you arrived and left work.
 The customer is always right; you are in business to serve them, not to be served.
 Try to develop cordial relations with everyone at the workplace (including the guards,
janitors, etc.)
 Be generous with your greetings
 Show appreciation for the help and consideration of other people.
 Maintain strict confidentiality. What you see and what you hear should be left in your
workplace. Do not report company information even to your best friend or your family.
 Look people straight in the eye when speaking or being spoken to. Show you understand
them.
 Do not use office facilities, supplies, or equipment for personal business even if you see other
employees doing so.
 Be tactful and discrete; learn when to talk and when to stay silent.
 Show you are trustworthy with information, work, money, and supplies. (Note: One
practicum student found ₱50,000 left by a customer and returned it to their supervisor.)
 Be economical; recycle and re use supplies.
 Clean your desk and work area regularly; and leave it neat and orderly at the end of the day.
 Turn over unfinished work to your supervisor before you leave the office.
 Inform your supervisor (by phone or other means) if you cannot report for work.
 Do not be a clock watcher.
 Minimize your movements, avoid standing and sitting repeatedly; be efficient and plan your
work well.
 Do not be a social butterfly; save flirting until after work hours.
 Use appropriate, clean language at all times, even when telling jokes.
 Do not carry on conversations when they are not important to the work. (Avoid being
“marites” or “palawakal”
 Be accurate in your work even if that means doing it slowly at first. Don’t sacrifice accuracy
for speed.
 Try to work with less supervision as time goes on.
 Do not entertain friends at the workplace unless they are customers.
 Do not make the workplace as a meeting place for your friends, boyfriends or girlfriends.
 Show initiative by noticing the problems of your co-workers and coming to their assistance.
 When receiving instructions, ask questions if you are unsure, then repeat the instructions until
the person says you have the steps right (it is better to feel a little embarrassed now than to be
scolded later for work done wrong.
 If you have idle time, use it to do research for your paper and to write in your journal or diary.
 Develop a thick skin, do not let rude customers or scolding from co-workers make you lose
your temper.
 Hold on to your sense of humor, even during times of stress or uncertainty.
 Wear your uniform at all times; show pride in PSU and the Business Administration program.
