Course Syllabus
Please contact the BIO 45 lab admin coordinator, Olivia Kline ([email protected]) and cc your
instructor and TA about absences, scheduling lab make-up sessions, and any other administrative issues.
Make sure to cc your TA on all correspondence.
• Apply critical thinking and analytical skills to address important scientific questions
Recommended pre-requisites
Although there are no pre-requisites for this course, it will be helpful if you have already taken or are
concurrently enrolled in introductory courses in cell and molecular biology (BIO 82, 83 and 86 or
HUMBIO 2A and 3A) and general chemistry (CHEM 31A and 31B or CHEM 31M).
Important Dates
Successful completion of quizzes, attendance at the Week 10 Oral presentation, and final poster
presentation session are required to be eligible for a Satisfactory grade. Please contact your instructor
if you anticipate a conflict. Mutant Group Discussions will be held during the regular Monday lecture
time in Weeks 6 and 9 and may be held in various locations rather than the usual lecture classroom
locations.

Course Attendance
Attendance will be taken at each lecture and lab section: Students are expected to be on time, as well as
be prepared for and participate fully in all discussion and lab sections. Please bring your lab notebook
and laptop to all lectures and lab sections.
Note: Currently, Stanford University strongly recommends masking indoors and in crowded outdoor
settings. We will provide you with KN95 masks to use while attending BIO 45 labs.
You can find the most current policies on campus masking requirements on the COVID-19 Health Alerts
site.
Make-up Sessions: All missed lecture and lab sections must be made up. You may miss only up to
two regularly scheduled labs, and each must be made up during a make-up lab the following
Monday. In addition, you cannot miss more than two lecture sections. Please note that the total
number of missed lecture/lab sections cannot exceed three. A passing grade will NOT be given to
students who fail to meet these attendance requirements. Absences that require make-up sessions
include university-associated events (e.g. athletic competition, musical performance, etc.) or illness. If
you anticipate an absence, please notify the BIO 45 administrative coordinator Olivia Kline
([email protected]) and cc your instructor and TA as soon as possible to schedule a make-up lecture
and/or lab. Make-up sessions will be held on the Monday after the weekly scheduled lab, from 6:00 –
10:00 PM in STLC- 223. In order for us to provide adequate supplies for the make-up labs, you must
contact your instructor and TA beforehand to arrange to attend a make-up session.
As is the case with scientific research, you may need to repeat experiments to get reliable results. In
those cases, you will be required to re-do the experiments during the corresponding make-up lab session.

Assignments are due at the times indicated below to receive full credit. Scores on late assignments will
be immediately reduced by 10% of the total possible score, as well as an additional 10% for each
subsequent late day.
Weekly Pre-Lab Assignments: There will be a weekly pre-lab assignment to prepare you for the week's
lab. This is to be submitted individually online through Canvas by 10:00 PM the evening before your
lab section.
Weekly Post-Lab Assignments: There will be a weekly post-lab assignment in which you format, analyze,
and interpret data collected during lab. These post-lab assignments are due online through Canvas by
10:00 PM on the third day after your lab section (e.g. if your lab section is on Tuesday, your post-lab
would be due on Friday by 10:00 PM).
With the exception of Week 1, post-lab assignments will be submitted through Canvas by only one
student from a partner pair. Starting with the Week 2 post-lab assignment, instructions will be provided
as to which one of the partners should submit a given week’s assignment.
Poster Session: Each student will work with their lab partner to prepare and present a poster that
succinctly and effectively summarizes the experiments they did and the results they obtained throughout
the quarter. Additional details about poster preparation and submission will be provided in the class and
on Canvas.
Laboratory Notebook: Each student is strongly encouraged to maintain a 3-ring binder laboratory
notebook that contains all the information pertinent to the lab. Please carefully review the “Instructions
for Notebook Keeping” document, posted under “General Information” on the class Canvas site, on
properly maintaining your notebook.
Lab Safety Quiz: Students are required to review the relevant information on biological and chemical
safety and complete a lab safety quiz by 10 pm the night before the 1st lab.
Course Participation: Science is a group endeavor and we expect each person to contribute to the fullest
during discussions and labs. Your participation points are based on your attendance, timeliness,
contributions, and overall engagement in lecture and laboratory sections.

Drop policy
After the University deadline, the course may be dropped only for serious and compelling reasons.
Serious illness and similar catastrophes qualify; poor academic performance does not. An Incomplete (I)
is given only when extenuating circumstances prevent a student from completing work in the course. Per
University policy, an “I” grade remaining incomplete after one year will automatically be changed to
“No Credit”.
