HOW TO USE THE AK-G GPS RECEIVER FOR THE FIRST TIME
1-Always start with the CAMERA TURNED OFF.
2-GOMPASS CALIBRATiON wili be needed oniy once, when the AK-G is used for the first time or in a new environment.

a) For the following you will need a hand-heid compasa and a means of rotating the camera, such as a tripod head with a
rotating base or some sort of turntable. With the AK-G properly mounted and the camera LEVEL and OFF, turn the AK-G
ON and with the RED LEO still flashing before satellite acquisition, immediately rotate the camera 180 degrees rapidly and
stop.
b) The LED will turn on solid GREEN, not flashing, indicating COMPASS CALIBRATION MODE. Then quickiy rotate the
camera two or three revoiutions at a speed of about one or two seconds per revolution and stop the rotation with the
c) The GREEN LED wiii flash rapidiy, for a few mornents, about four times per second. When the compase caiibration is
complete the LED wiii flash RED at a rate of one flash per second. When satellite acquisition is achieved the LED will flash
GREEN at a rate of about once per second. This usuaily takes about 30 seconds from a coid start. Oniy then can the
wiii insure the accuracy of the Date/Time information appiied to the EXiF file. This GPS time data is reconciied with the
time zone setting in the camera's SETUP menú and therefore provides sateiiite-accurate LOCAL time.
b) GPS data can aiso be viewed on the camera's LCD screen by accessing it in the camera's SETUP menú using the
command string: SETUP>GPS>Position. PRESENT POSiTiON data wiii be seen oniy when the AK-G is turned on and is
4-The Nikon DSLR has a function called AUTO METER OFF,(ENABLE/DISABLE) that is found in the SETUP>GPS menú. The
same voitage that powers the camera's exposure metering circuitry aiso powers the AK-G. When AUTO METER OFF is ENABLED,
this function turna this power off automaticaiiy after a pre-set deiay in order to conserve power. AUTO METER OFF DELAY, can be
found in the Custom Setting Menú (CSM) at #c2. Power to the metering and to the AK-G is restored when the shutter release
button is depressed half way. At the same time the camera's exposure metering comes back to life, so does the AK-G awake from
sieep mode after the normal three second deiay for a hot start. it is recommended that this deiay be set to 30 seconds or greater to
assure that the AK-G does not go to sieep immediately after each shot. When AUTO METER OFF is DiSABLED this power is
never switched off.
5-lf the camera is taken into a building where satellite acquisition is not avaiiabie, the photos wiii be iabeled with the iast avaiiabie
GPS data. Upon returning to the outdoors, the AK-G wiii once again acquire accurate data directiy from the satellites.
6-The AK-G draws about 60 ma of current during operation and about 2 ma when asieep. This sieeping power is consumed even
when the camera is turned off. Therefore the AK-G must be turned off with the small switch on the side of unit when not in use, thus
using no power at aii from the camera's battery even when ieft attached to the camera.
