CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding of the significant roles of artists from the regions
and identify their contributions to contemporary arts.
CHECKPOINT: What are the significant roles and remarkable contributions of the Filipino artists in
Contemporary Arts?

Hello, dear SHS learners! In the previous lesson, you have learned
that the ARTS are means of expression that require imagination
and/or skill in making aesthetics objects. These objects are
conceptual, innovative, expressive, and experimental. Among the
various art forms before the Contemporary Era are the following:

1. Visual Art which appeals to the eyes includes

Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Calligraphy, and
Photography.

2. Applied Art which is more on usage or functionality

includes Architecture, Fashion, Pottery, Jewelry
Design, and Interior Design.

3. Performing Arts and Others which are meant to

entertain or amuse us include Dancing, Music,
Theatre Arts, Film Productions and Literature.
2

During the 1970’s up to the present, artists began to combine

different art forms and media which gives rise to Integrative Arts-
which refers to interdisciplinary art, art study, development,
production, display, or creative creation of work that makes full
use of two or more disciplines of art to produce a work for a
particular public. Artists, architects, designers, musicians, writers, and performers have
undergone a lot of experimentation of ideas, materials, and method to integrate two or more
different art forms such as sculpture and music, literature and photography etc.

Because of INTEGRATIVE ARTS, Contemporary Art Forms now include the following:

1. Choreography
2. Literary Musical Composition
3. Theatrical Performance
4. Musical Instruments
5. Visual Designs and Applied Arts Combined
6. Cinema

In this lesson, you will learn about the Filipino artists ’roles and identify
their contributions to contemporary arts.

The Filipino Artists’ Roles

An ARTIST is someone who is gifted with creativity and

practices an imaginative art. Like all other artists around the globe,
the Filipino artists can be described as :
 Someone who finds a need to create something not only pleasing to the eyes, but
something entertaining, relevant and useful.
 One who uplifts the spirit and gives form to the immaterial, the hidden truth of the
universe, and the spiritual force that inhabits the world.
 An artist is a social critic who gives his opinion about the culture of his time
 A crusader attempting to influence the viewer to his or her side
 Someone who is versatile and an advocate for what he/she believes in.

In the past, the artist’s role was well-defined and that is to create something that
uplifted the spirit, something aesthetically pleasing and entertaining. However, in the kind
of arts that we have today, the Filipino artists’ role is four-fold:

1. The Personal - The artist expresses what he or she feels.

2. The Social - The artist expresses what he or she sees around him/her.
3. The Physical - The artist finds a need to create something not only pleasing to look at
but something useful as well.
4. The Immaterial - The artist tries to unfold the hidden truth of the universe and the
spiritual force that inhabits the world.

Prior to the Philippine Contemporary Art Era, only a few distinguished

women were able to gain entry into the world of arts, until the time came
when many other women assert their own identity and contribute in
social realism. The Order of National Artists plays a vital role in the
development of Philippine Arts in the Contemporary setting.
