Philippine Literature in English

During World War II from 1941-1945, Philippine literature in English experienced a dark period under strict prohibitions from the Japanese occupation. Writers felt suppressed but slowly developed a spirit of nationalism. A few works were published during this time including His Native Soil by Juan Laya in 1941 and Six Filipino Poets by Carlos Bulosan in 1942. Literature is studied to improve imagination and understand a country's traditions, culture, and help appreciate its rich heritage of ideas.
