WRITTEN BY: JUAN LAYA YEAR: 1941 Because of the strict prohibition imposed by the Japanese in the Six Filipino (Poets) writing and publishing of works in WRITTEN BY: CARLOS BULOSAN English, Philippine literature in YEAR: 1942 English experienced a dark period. I saw the Fall of the Philippines Writings that came out during this period (Story) were journalistic in nature. Writers felt WRITTEN BY: CARLOS P. ROMULO suppressed but slowly, the spirit of YEAR: 1943 nationalism started to seep into their consciousness. While some continued to The Laughter of my Father (Story) write, the majority waited for a better WRITTEN BY: CARLOS BULOSAN YEAR: 1944 climate to publish their works.

Importance of Studying Philippine Literature in English
1. We study literature for us to understand it. By understanding it, we can appreciate our rich heritage of ideas handed down by our ancestors. 2. By studying our literature we can understand more about our country's traditions and culture. With this understanding, we can see our literary limitations which we find ways to overcome them. 3. Above all, as Filipinos who genuinely cherish and value our culture, we must demonstrate our sincere concern for our own literature, which we may accomplish by reading literature from our nation.
