Challenges Encountered by Grade 11 STEM Students of Laguna

College of Business and Arts: S.Y. 2023 - 2024

Introduction

“Not investing in STEM can hurt the country economically, politically,

and educationally.”

Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2022.

According to the Manila Times (2019), 91% of Filipino respondents,

particularly students, are interested in careers within the Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics strand, based on a poll performed by Electric

Co. whereas 80% are demonstrated to be encouraged to do so. This survey

only proves that in terms of careers that the students are interested in, they

are mostly aligned with the STEM strand, which is what the PIDS is aiming for in

this country, because STEM careers are mostly about scientific and

technological advancement, which are key aspects of contemporary

society - the nature of the world now. However, as per the article written by

Sison, M., stated that despite long-term efforts to improve educational

outcomes in the Philippines, the country remains an "educational laggard,"

with low rankings in three distinct global evaluations of STEM students'

performance. As a result, the article addressed simply points out that the

significant hurdles of STEM students are present when taking the course.

Therefore, even with a large number of students interested in STEM

employment opportunities, the challenges are a real burden.

As stated by Manuel, Raoul from Kabataan partylist, "we can't find

more young people in STEM careers if we can't guarantee quality education

that will equip students to comprehend and solve basic problems or

calculations," which can be considered as one of the major external

problems of STEM students because the strand requires laboratories,

equipment, tons of materials, and more. In terms of internal difficulties,

Hewson S. (2019) identified several reasons why students such as these

struggle with STEM matters, including: excessive procedural thinking, a lack of

talents, a lack of practice and confidence, and a lack of mathematics

interests and a thirst for knowledge.

With that, the researchers seek to determine more about the problems

that Grade 11 STEM students at Laguna College of Business and Arts

experienced or are experiencing. And, using qualitative methodologies, this

research will be able to discover the factors from co-respondents, from which

advised remedies may be supplied.
