Teaching Methods:
 Lecture

Differnet types of Intelligences/Learning Styles:
 Visual-Spatial - Picture Smart (drawing,
pictures, diagrams and other visual aids)
 Bodily-Kenesthetic - Body Smart (touch and
movement)
 Auditory-Musical - Music Smart (rhythm,
melody, singing and listening to music)
 Interpersonal - People Smart (sharing,
comparing, cooperating)
 Intrapersonal -  Self Smart (independent,
organised, working alone)
 Logical-Mathematical - Logic Smart
(classifying, categorizing, numbers)
 Verbal-Linguistic - Word Smart (reading,
writing, listening and speaking)
 Nauralistic - Nature Smart (living things,
natural events, working with nature)
After reading through the various teaching methods and
learning styles, I have identified a range of what worked
best for me when I was a learner at school. The methods
taught me were the lecture, discussion and active
learning method.

The lecture approach was one of the traditional methods

used when I attended school. Although it got a bit
tedious at times it was still effective. I personally
favoured a combination of learning styles, namely the
Intrapersonal and Verbal-Linguistic learning style. This
worked best for while still at school. I was very
independent from a young age and did not find it hard to
study on my own. I actually preferred it that way. The use
of pictures and diagrams which favors the Visual-Spatial
learning style worked best for me in a subject like
Biology where we had to know the different systems of
the body.
Now that I am studying at Unisa(Distance Learning) I find
that my learning style has changed. I now favor the
Interpersonal learning style by sharing with others
although the Verbal-Linguistic style still plays a big part
in my learning. Most people will have a combination of
the above learning styles. Teachers today need to use a
combination of methods to suit the different styles
present in the classroom as learners are more
responsive to grasping information when they are more
involved. Children are able to learn from each other but
only if they are encouraged to discuss amongst
themselves and this is where the teacher has to motivate
the students.  Lessons should be geared towards
problem solving and critical thinking. This will stand the
student in stead when he/she decides to study further.

Student Name- Rebecca Ramsalithar

Student Number- 50225324

Topic- Teaching and learning styles, the style I identified with when I was a learner.

Assignment Unique Number- 709415

Teaching Styles:

Lecturing- The teacher communicates large pieces of information to the students, this is
an effective style of teaching but there is no feedback from the students and no way of
knowing if they understand.

Active Learning- The learners are actively involved by reading, writing, talking and
creating. This gives the learner an opportunity to do a percievable activity and a self-
activity.

Discussion- The group discussion gets the learners to participate by voicing their
opinions, giving critical points and their perspectives.

Co-operative Learning- This stimulates the learner's individual responsibility, positive

indepenednce and resolves conflicts.

Integrating Technology- Computer literacy and technology promotes communication

and understanding. Difficult concepts can be explained.

Distance Learning- Learning can be done out of a structured classroom. Learning

experiences can be achieved beyond the confinement of a traditional classroom.

Demonstration Teaching- The teacher displays actions and guidance in how to do

something and how it works.

Experimentation- Activities are provided where discovery and exploration takes place.

Learning Styles:

Visual learning- The learner uses their sight and visual media to learn.

Aural learning- This is achieved from listening and sound. A few examples are sound
cuts, tape recordings, music instruments and songs.

Verbal Learning- This learning consists of words, speech and written work.

Social Learning- This is interpersonal learning, done by forming groups or interacting

with others.
Solitary Learning- This is intrapersonal learning where the learner prefers learning
alone, a self study.

Naturalist- A person that enjoys learning from nature and natural features.

Kinesthetic Learner- Enjoys learning from movement, sensorimotor muscular response.

Sterognostic Learner- Recognizes objects through tactile exploration without sight.

Thermic Learning- Learning is done through the perception of temperature and a

thermic sense.

Chromatic Learning- The sense to identify, match and discriminate among different
colours.

Gustatory- Learning done through eating activities, to educate the learner on healthy
eating habbits.

Olfactory Learning- This is done through the sense of smell.

Tactile learner-  Enjoys to learn from touching and feeling.

The Mystery Style Learner- They judge information with practicality and clarity.

The Understanding Learner- Learns through questioning and reasoning, along with
evidence and logic.

The Self-Expressive style- Uses images, emotions and feelings to judge.

The Interpersonal Style- The learner focuses on concrete information, learns by

socializing with others.

My Personal Style of Learning:

As a student at school I enjoyed being a kinesthetic learner, by doing and

experimentation. Activities that required discovery and exploring always grasped my
attention. Dance and movement, games and drama kept me on my toes and looking
forward to the next period of activities planned. The teaching methods where more of
traditional and lecturing bases, I wish that teaching then had more of the
experimentation and strategies used in our modern based environments at school
today.

The demonstration style would have been a good way of showing learners the method
of doing things and guided them through the lesson. There are great styles of
teaching currently as evident in the classrooms that stem from the modern society. Our
days of education did not consist of modern technology such as computers, but
teachers did maintain a high standard of education. The expirementation and discussion
styles of teaching, keep the learners actively involved and engrossed in the planned
lesson.

Teachers always have a way of providing lessons to the best of their potential and make
do of the resources available. Most of our educators find ways to accomodate their
learners and exploit ways of entertaining different learning styles. They begin with a
vision and find ways to follow that dream.

I so agree on the point you made about the

demonstration style and how it would've benefitted us
years ago. You are right about the high standard of
education then. And yes technology plays such a big role
today.

Hi Megan

I appreciate all the points you put down on your personal

experience on learning. Great to know that you enjoy
interacting with other people in your new learning
adventure. We realize now that all our teachers had one
thing in common and that was to see their learners
transpire into successful people some day.

 Hi Rebecca

Thanks so much. Yes that is so true.  I think that once a

teacher recognises the students learning style then the
whole teaching effort will benefit the child. Teacher has
to instill a love of learning into the child. And what
better way to do this than to recognise the learning style
and work with the child.
What do you think?

Hi Megan

I agree with your statement on trying to adapt our

teaching to what style suits our learner the best. Often
teachers expected students to adapt to their teaching
method, this module that we are tackling has opened our
eyes to the variety of possibilities in progressing our
learners. We can understand the needs of our learners in
a broader spectrum of diversity. This gives us
ammunition in being well prepared and ready to
approach the barriers and difficulties our learners may
face. Once we understand how different teaching and
learning styles affect the learner academically, we can
move forward with the strategy of improvising and
adjusting our lessons prepared. The points you put
forward in your learning experience proved to be true
and enlightening. We do change our learning styles to
what suits the situation best, our styles are never fixed. It
is great to know that we can learn from other people and
help each other understand learning together. Other
opinions and perspectives always bring more to a
subject than expected.

Hi Rebecca

I totally agree. And learners today face so many barriers

to their learning. So its important for teachers to have
those qualities we identified in the first discussion. I
agree in that this module has opened the various
possibilities. We will be well equipped after this to go out
there and apply what we have learnt and be able to
recognise the different issues. Yes adapting your
learning style I think is important. I know my daughter is
a verbal linguistic learner but she also uses music or
rhythm to learn. My son on the other hand is very
practical and he thinks logically.

 Thanks Basheera

Yes but I suppose its harder in rural areas where there

arent enough teachers. The child in the rural area is not
going to benefit by getting the one on one attention.
Which is really sad.

As for teachers in urban areas, I think its important to be

able to recognise the Effective qualities of teachers to
enable learners to get the attention they need. Without
that theres no point. As we discussed in previous
disccussion, theres different qualities and roles and the
professionalism they must have. These are all important
in my view to help overcome the barriers, to recognise
the learning style so that teachers can adapt their
method.

What do you guys think?

Re: Group 2

Hi Basheera

The points you have raised on learners getting attention

is an important issue. As educators it is vital that we
adhere to our learners needs, thats where the learning
styles become effective. If we can understand what
moves our learners and pay attention to their interests
then planning a variety of lessons can be achieved.
Learners need to know that we understand and can
provide the support that they need. The diversity in
learning styles will demand a variety of planned
activities. The educator has a task of  maintaining equal
attention to the different learning styles, where there is a
will- there is a way. It all begins with the passion for what
we do best, to educate.

I have been a very reserved learner in school keeping all my work and files

best teaching method and learning style for going my personality , going
upfront speaking ,giving speeches was not really my best friend however
the one learning style I enjoyed most and kept me positive to my own
thinking and work is , the intrapersonal style.
It helped me, build myself strong as a person and be more independent on
myself and build my confidence as well .
However I would say that the active teaching style is a good way of getting
to know the learners on another level and it will also help with opening their
minds keeping them yearning for knowledge all the time .

Teaching styles

* Co operative learning.
* Discussions
* Lectur.
* Close method
* Intergrating technology.
* Distance learning.
* Active learning.
Learning styles

* Bodily learning style: Pysical learning. People use

their body and sence of touch and feeling to learn about
things around them.

* Social interpersonal learning style: Learners like to

communicate with people verbally or non verbally. They
enjoy learning in groups and inteacting with people. They
aren't shy to start conversations either.

* Verbally (linguistic) learning style: This is a written

or spoken word. You find it easy to express yourself in
writing and verbally. These type of people love to write
and read.

*Logical (mathematical) learning style: Learners that

learn with this style enjoy using their brain for logical and
mathematical reasoning. They work well with people and
can perform complex calculations.

*Aural (musical) learning styles: This is a learning

style that involves music. Learners whom enjoy this style
have a good sence of pitch and rythm. They also
concentrate better when music is playing and they learn
quicker through ,music.

* Naturalistic learning style: This is a style of finding

patterns and relationships to nature. This learning style
includes biology.
*Spitial (visual) learning style: Learners learn with
colours and pictures. They can easily visualize objects
and have a good sence of direction. These learners like
drawing.

In school i was a very social person. I enjoyed making

friends and surrounding myself with people. I'm also a
creative person therefore i enjoyed learning verbally. I
could express my thoughts on paper and found it very
interesting to read how other people expressed
themselves. It was easier for me to write what i
thought or felt than to just start talking about it. Once i
had written down these things i would easily be able to
verbally communicate with people around me.  Because i
was social i always wanted to interact in a group
therefore another learning style that i found suited me
perfectly was the social learning style.

Hi Nkanyiso

Yes, discussion is a brilliant way of getting our individual

learners involved. You and Megan are right, learners can
be actively involved in the lesson. This teaching
method also leaves room for questioning, different
perspectives and feedback on what the learner
understood. It also builds that team spirit and helps you
learn while you interact. Social skills
are developed whilst our learners take into
consideration the opinion of their team members.

Visual learning  really works for me, when I look and observe something it stays in my
mind for a long period of time and it makes more sense , as I have a clear idea as to
what is happening.social learning has also helped me a lot , many people may say that
social learning isn’t good due to noise or confusion , however the more people the
better , they all get their facts and opinions together and see where they are right or
wrong , experimenting and demonstrating just like visual learning also helps
Listening to others and their point of view will make you thing and understand the
subject topic better and you will certainly be more interested in the topic because you
will want to do more research and share it with your fellow members. This is a good way
of learning , so that you know how important it is for you to strive for your best to be the
best. There are many different types of learning ways , but I feel these mentioned in my
above paragraph works the best for me.

 Hi Fahldeelah

Its absolutely great that you are able to learn visually. I

think its important today that students are able to see
and do instead of a tremendous amount of facts being
thrown at them and they have to decipher it. I found it
quite hard at school although I am a social person to
actually concentrate in the "noise or confusion". Those
factors made it very hard for me especially when it came
to studying.
How are you finding it now since studying at Unisa which

STUDY.
 VISUAL (SPATIAL):USING
PICTURES,IMAGES AND SPATIAL
UNDERSTANDING.
 AURAL- AUDITORY MUSICAL: YOU PREFER
USING SOUND AND MUSIC.
 VERBAL LINGUISTIC-YOU PREFER USING
WORDS BOTH IN SPEECH AND WRITTING.
EACH PERSON PREFER DIFFERENT LEARNING
STYLES AND TECHNIQUES.LEARNING STYLES
GROUP COMMON WAYS THAT PEOPLE LEARN .
EVERYONE HAS A MIX OF LEARNING
STYLES.THERE IS NO RIGHT MIX.NOR ARE YOUR
STYLES FIXED .YOU CAN DEVELOP ABILITITY IN
LESS DOMINANT STYLES AS WELL AS FURTHER
DEVELOP STYLES THAT YOU ALREADY USE
WELL.USING MULTIPLE LEARNING STYLES
/MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE FOR LEARNING IS A NEW
APPROACH.

MY PREFERED LEARNING STYLE AS A LEARNER:

MY PRIMARY SCHOOL YEARS HAVE SHAPED AND

MOULDED MY FUTURE- SITING SO ATTENTIVELY
AND WATCHING MY EDUCATOR EXPLAIN AND
EXPLAIN UNTIL I UNDERSTOOD WHAT WAS
EXPECTED I TOTALLY ENJOYED LECTURING  AND
EXPLAINING. MY TEACHER HAD MADE ME REALISE
THAT WE GOT TO BE FOCUSED TO EXCEL/
PERFORM WELL IN SCHOOL TO TAKE UP GOOD
CAREERS,AND BE WELL EDUCATED WE GOT TO
LISTEN AS LISTENING HELPED ME UNDERSTAND
ABOUT LIFE AND WHAT IT IS TO VENTURE OUT
INTO THE REAL WORLD.I ALSO ENJOYED OR
PREFERD  SOLITARY(INTRAPERSONAL) STYLE AS
THIS IS LESS DISTRACTION.

LEARNING STYLES AND MULTIPLE INTELLIGANCE

The diversity of learners dictates the manner of
implementing the curriculum. recognition of the fact that
learner possess different or multiple intellegences, in
crucial for inclusive classroom.  The learners
intellegence and accomanying learning styles, therefore
should be taken as a satrting point in determing the
teaching methologies and assessment procedures to
applied.

Assistive devise for writing

Computer can be used enhance the writing abilities of

students by offering alternative strategies to produce
and learning.  As student begin the writing process, they
associate sounds with the shapes of words and letters.
They look to see if the words make sense and are spelled
correctly. They read what they have written to themselves
or out loud. When composing or revising the look to
privious sectors and insert, erase, recognnise or make
notes, pens and pencils are their writing tools
legibility in written work is important.

The writing continuum

nowadays students and learners frequently require

alternative ways of creating writen text.  There is
continuum of writing tools and strategies that includes
pencis to computer to input by voice.  Although low tech
options should be considered. Computer offer a variety of
features that can support the writing process by using a
keyboard to write legibly issues are often eliminated.
students are able to see and hear as they write with
special software programme. Computer can also provide
assistance with visual organization, outlining and step-
by-step direction following all of which support the
writing process.

Young pupils are now more intellegent because thet start

at home by using a blender controlled by a switch.
Environmental control of appliances such as radio, fans,
blenders, televion etc.
Seeing

When the teacher collected picture to use when, she/he

start lesson the learner will be able to understand and
define of the text. You can as the learner what they
think about the picture. Some of them they will say, they
see the man was cheated or people are often cheated,
because they learnt to do sums.

Teachers use pictures in the classroom, for lots of

reasons especially with beginner learners. Like those in
a basic literacy or health class.

Warm-up

When you teach about the distance and place, you must
bring out a large map and place on the wall, or infront
of the learners so that they can identify the place and
ask everyone to go in front to show the different
province learner know better when the see.

Collecting and evaluating information

Gathered the information, learners required them to

obtaininformation about planting, health and environment,
ask for information and they had to look for the
information in books.

Yes S Pather, I agree on the point you made about our
teachers motivating us to pursue a career and be well
educated.
I personally also preferred the solitary(intrapersonal)
style as I found it hard to concentrate with too much
noise.

Learning styles / Types of Intelligence

-       Visual Learning : The learners uses drawings, pictures and visual aids to learn

-       Kinesthetic Style: The learners are body smart, they must touch and move
around.

-       Sterognostic Style: Learning through recognizing object through exploration.

-       Auditory-Musical Style: The learners learn through rhythm, melody, singing and
listening to music

-       Naturalist: This learns that enjoys learning from nature and natural features.

My personal style:

Throughout the years I can still relate to the kinesthetic style. It is much easier for
me to touch things and move around. Also the style I have seen work best for
children is the Auditory-musical style. I can definitely relate to that. Through
rhymes and songs I learn much easier my work and with UNISA and work I can
say that this style does definitely work.

 Hi Yolinda

Very interesting learning style. I completely agree with

what you said about children learning through music. It
amazes me when my son comes home from nursery
school and the new songs or rhymes he has learnt
especially when it involves actions as well. Children pick
up so quickly by doing this.

Hi Megs
It definitely is true. I mean how fast don't we learn a
song..... what I do is I record my work on a back track
and listen to it like a song.... It really works... It is nice to
see how many ways a person or learner can learn

QUESTION; Teaching and learning

styles

Teaching Styles-

Authority figure-this puts teacher as centre of attentionand students

focus on what the teacher is doing .All the information is from the
teacher.Misbehaving learners are being dealt with by the teacher. This
type produces short term results.

Authority Model-teacher models or demonstrate certain behaviour that is

beneficial to the learners. He or she finds satisfaction in the studies that
students make each day this helps to build a trusting relationship with
their teacher that lasts beyond the classroom.

Student Oriented -the teacher develops activities that help students

build up relationships while learning the needed material. They end up with
friendships with others and remember content oof lesson plans.

Students learn the material themselves-the teacher has detailed lesson

plans ,students have to to read and find a way to learn and complete
assignments by themselves. They have to learn to work in groups, the
teacher is there only to provide guidance and support.

Hand off method:students read the book and complete work given in an
outlined format. The teacher is available for questions.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

1.Fit the lecture to the audience.

2.Focus your topic

3.Organise your points for clarity.

4.Select appropriate examples or illustrations.

5.Repeat points when necessary.

6.Beware of your audience and notice their lfeedback.

7.Be enthusiastic by showing that you are excited about the topic.

8.Case Method-provide opportunities for students to apply what they

have learned in the classroom to real life.

9.Discussion-ensure that the whole class participates in the discussion.

10.Cooperative learning-groups work together for a common goal.

The Authority Model teaching style works because it builds a relation

ship with learners as this increases trust between the teacher and the
learners.Even if the learners are out of the classroom they can still trust
the teacher due to the relationship and understanding having been built.

Hi  M.  BHEBHE

YES   ITS IS    TRUE  THAT  THE  TEACHER
SHOULD  DO  LESSON PLAN  BEFORE  GO  TO
CLASS.  BECAUSE   SHE OR  HE DONE    WELL
PREPARED,  AND  IT  IS  THE  GOOD  IDEA  THAT
THE   LEARNERS  MAY  STUDY BY  THE  GROUPS
BECAUSE  THEY  ALL PARTCIPATE
