by R RAMSALITHAR - 16 Sep 2013 @ 14:37
Student Name- Rebecca Ramsalithar
Topic- Teaching and learning styles, the style I identified with when I was a learner.
Teaching Styles:
Lecturing- The teacher communicates large pieces of information to the students, this is
an effective style of teaching but there is no feedback from the students and no way of
knowing if they understand.
Active Learning- The learners are actively involved by reading, writing, talking and
creating. This gives the learner an opportunity to do a percievable activity and a self-
activity.
Discussion- The group discussion gets the learners to participate by voicing their
opinions, giving critical points and their perspectives.
Experimentation- Activities are provided where discovery and exploration takes place.
Learning Styles:
Visual learning- The learner uses their sight and visual media to learn.
Aural learning- This is achieved from listening and sound. A few examples are sound
cuts, tape recordings, music instruments and songs.
Verbal Learning- This learning consists of words, speech and written work.
Naturalist- A person that enjoys learning from nature and natural features.
Chromatic Learning- The sense to identify, match and discriminate among different
colours.
Gustatory- Learning done through eating activities, to educate the learner on healthy
eating habbits.
The Mystery Style Learner- They judge information with practicality and clarity.
The Understanding Learner- Learns through questioning and reasoning, along with
evidence and logic.
The demonstration style would have been a good way of showing learners the method
of doing things and guided them through the lesson. There are great styles of
teaching currently as evident in the classrooms that stem from the modern society. Our
days of education did not consist of modern technology such as computers, but
teachers did maintain a high standard of education. The expirementation and discussion
styles of teaching, keep the learners actively involved and engrossed in the planned
lesson.
Teachers always have a way of providing lessons to the best of their potential and make
do of the resources available. Most of our educators find ways to accomodate their
learners and exploit ways of entertaining different learning styles. They begin with a
vision and find ways to follow that dream.

generations of teachers.

Re: Group 2

i agree with u statements megan " Teachers today need
to use a combination of methods to suit the different
styles present in the classroom as learners are more
responsive to grasping information when they are more
involved. Children are able to learn from each other but
only if they are encouraged to discuss amongst
themselves and this is where the teacher has to motivate
the students " - i think teachers today , have a whole new
different concept of just getting there work done and not
putting that one on one attetntion , helping other learners
who take a while to grasp benefit but also work
dependently .

discussions that we do. It really showed me another

I have been a very reserved learner in school keeping all my work and files
to myself. So I must say , I have experienced a lot of challenges finding the
best teaching method and learning style for going my personality , going
upfront speaking ,giving speeches was not really my best friend however
the one learning style I enjoyed most and kept me positive to my own
thinking and work is , the intrapersonal style.
It helped me, build myself strong as a person and be more independent on
myself and build my confidence as well .
However I would say that the active teaching style is a good way of getting
to know the learners on another level and it will also help with opening their
minds keeping them yearning for knowledge all the time .

I can relate to you being a reserved learner. I was the
same at school. And i agree that it has made me to be
very independent although now i enjoy interacting with
fellow students. The dynamic of university and high
school is completely different especially as this is a
Distance Learning institution and we dont have the
advantages of full time study at a campus and interacting
with other students.

My experiences of learning and what I prefer
Visual learning really works for me, when I look and observe something it stays in my
mind for a long period of time and it makes more sense , as I have a clear idea as to
what is happening.social learning has also helped me a lot , many people may say that
social learning isn’t good due to noise or confusion , however the more people the
better , they all get their facts and opinions together and see where they are right or
wrong , experimenting and demonstrating just like visual learning also helps
Listening to others and their point of view will make you thing and understand the
subject topic better and you will certainly be more interested in the topic because you
will want to do more research and share it with your fellow members. This is a good way
of learning , so that you know how important it is for you to strive for your best to be the
best. There are many different types of learning ways , but I feel these mentioned in my
above paragraph works the best for me.

Warm-up
When you teach about the distance and place, you must
bring out a large map and place on the wall, or infront
of the learners so that they can identify the place and
ask everyone to go in front to show the different
province learner know better when the see.

I personally also preferred the solitary(intrapersonal)
style as I found it hard to concentrate with too much
noise.

Student : Y. Pieterse

Teaching Styles:
- Lecture
- Case Method
- Discussions
- Co-Operative Learning
- Integrating Technology
- Distance Learning
- Active Learning
- Visual Learning : The learners uses drawings, pictures and visual aids to learn
- Kinesthetic Style: The learners are body smart, they must touch and move
around.
- Auditory-Musical Style: The learners learn through rhythm, melody, singing and
listening to music
- Naturalist: This learns that enjoys learning from nature and natural features.
- Intrapersonal Style :Self Smart learn who is independent, organized and can work
alone
- Verbal-Linguistic Style: These learners are Word Smart they learn through
reading, writing, listening and speaking
My personal style:
Throughout the years I can still relate to the kinesthetic style. It is much easier for
me to touch things and move around. Also the style I have seen work best for
children is the Auditory-musical style. I can definitely relate to that. Through
rhymes and songs I learn much easier my work and with UNISA and work I can
say that this style does definitely work.
