Module2 Day2 Illustrating Arithmetic Sequence

1. The document provides practice exercises involving arithmetic sequences. It defines an arithmetic sequence as a sequence where each term after the first is formed by adding a fixed number to the preceding term. 2. Problems are presented involving finding the common difference, determining if a sequence is arithmetic, and calculating subsequent terms. Steps are outlined to solve these types of arithmetic sequence problems. 3. Additional examples are worked out, such as finding the common differences of sequences like 3, 8, 13, 18 and -2, 2, 6, 10, and determining the next terms in sequences.

PRACTICE EXERCISES #1

Solve the following.

1.Find the first 3 terms of the sequence with general term
aₙ = 2/n²

2.Find the 12th and 25th term of a sequence with general

term aₙ = -4n + 5

3. Find the 20th term of the sequence with general term

aₙ = 2( n - 10)²
SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS
1.Find the first 3 terms of the sequence with general
term aₙ = 2/n²
a₁ = 2/1² = 2
a₂ = 2/2² =2/4= 1/2
a₃ = 2/3² = 2/9
THEREFORE, the first 3 terms are 2, 1/2, 2/9
2. Findthe 12th and 25th term of a sequence
with general term aₙ = -4n + 5
a₁₂ = -4(12)+5
a₁₂ = -48+5
a₁₂ = -43 a₂₅ = -4(25)+5
a₂₅ = -100+5
a₂₅ = -95
3. Find the 20th term of the sequence with
general term aₙ = 2( n - 10)²
a₂₀ = 2(20 - 10)²
a₂₀ = 2(10)²
a₂₀ = 2(100)
a₂₀ = 200
PRACTICE EXERCISES #2

Find the general term of the following sequences.

1) 3, 9, 27, 81,...
2) 5/7, 5/8, 5/9, 5/10,…
SOLUTIONS:
1. By inspection 3,9,27 and 81 are powers of 3
a₁ = 3¹
a₂ = 3²
a₃ = 3³
a₄ = 3⁴
It follows that n is the same as the exponent.

THEREFORE the general term of the sequence 3, 9, 27,

81,... is
aₙ = 3ⁿ
SOLUTIONS:
2. By inspection the sequence can be written also as 5/7, 5/8,
5/9 and 5/10 it follows that 5 in the numerator is constant.

The denominator increase by 1 which means that the numerical

coefficient of n is 1. If n is 1 then to get 7 just add 6.

THEREFORE the general term of the sequence 5/7, 5/8, 5/9,

1/2...is

aₙ = 5/(n+6)

b) 3, 6, 12, 24, … b) 1, 4, 9, 16…
c) 5, 10, 15, 20, … c) 5, 12, 15, 17, 20…
Observe the following sequences:
1. 4, 7, 10, 13, … Notice that to get the next term in
each of the sequences above, a
2. 33, 38, 43, 48, … constant or a common difference is
3. -2, -6, -10, -14, … added to the preceding term. All of
these sequences are called Arithmetic
4. 100, 98, 96, 94, … Sequence.

Guide Questions:
a. Can you give the next two terms of the above
sequences?

b. How did you get those terms?

c. How will you determine whether the given sequence is

arithmetic or not?
.
To find the common difference (d) you can simply subtract

• the second term (𝑎2 ) by the first term (𝑎1 ),

d = 𝑎2 - 𝑎1, or

• the third term (𝑎3)by the second term (𝑎2),

d = 𝑎3 - 𝑎2 , or

• the fourth term (𝑎4) by the third term (𝑎3),

d = 𝑎4 - 𝑎3 , or

• in general, a term (𝑎𝑛) by its preceding term (𝑎𝑛−1)

𝑑 = 𝒂𝒏 − 𝒂𝒏−𝟏
Give the
.
common difference of the
following arithmetic sequences.
a. 3, 8, 13, 18, ...
Solutions:
Given: a₁ = 3, a₂ =8, a₃= 13, a₄=18

a₂ - a₁ = 8- 3 . a₃ - a₂ = 13 - 8 a₄- a₃ = 18- 13
=5 =5 =5

Therefore, 5 is the common difference of the

arithmetic sequence 3, 8, 13, 18, ...
b. -2, 2, 6, 10, ...
Solutions:
Given: a₁ = -2, a₂ = 2, a₃= 6, a₄=10

a₂ - a₁ = 2- (-2). a₃ - a₂ = 6 - 2 a₄- a₃ = 10 - 6
=2 + 2
=4 =4
=4

Therefore, 4 is the common difference of the

arithmetic sequence -2, 2, 6, 10, ...
Arithmetic sequence because
their differences are equal, which
is -7. -7 is called the common
35 - 42 = - 7 difference and it is represented by
d.
28 - 35 = - 7
21 - 28 = - 7

Solve for d:
The common difference is 3x².
8x² - 5x² = 3x² Therefore, it is an arithmetic
11x² - 8x² = 3x² sequence.
14x² - 11x² = 3x²
Solve for difference Not arithmetic since the
differences are not equal...
40 - 34 = 6
48 - 40 = 8
58 - 48 = 10
