Big Idea: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FANTASTIC?
Day 1 Tap into background knowledge about Fantastic Mr. Fox. Have you seen the movie? Have you read the book? What do you know about foxes? Have you heard of Roald Dahl? Have you read any of his other books? Read alone Chapter 1. Mini-lesson: Character Traits. Read Aloud Chapters 1-3. Groups choose 1 character to write down traits for. Share with class to create a Triple Venn Diagram comparing the farmers. Demonstrate vocabulary strategy using the word shallow (p. 3) as a class. Students try on their own with valley (p. 1) and orchard (p. 4). Homework: Read Chapters 2,3, and 4. Write vocabulary words in L.A. notebook lurking (8), crafty (9), cocky (11), crouching (11), glum (15), dozed (16), sobbed(16). ODDS = first 4; EVENS = last 3 word, p. # definition sentence from story This means . . . Day 2 Review vocabulary. Trivia pursuit/Find Someone Who . . . Review answers to review chapters read. Mini-lesson: Predicting. Write a prediction for how the fox family is going to escape. Discuss the word fantastic. Introduce extended response question and worksheet. Write one example for each on the chart. Homework: Read Chapters 5,6, and 7. Write on fantastic chart. Act it out for the class. Homework: Read Chapters 11, 12, and 13. Write on fantastic chart. Each group will be assigned one chapter to list causes and effects from. Make a large T-chart as a class. Homework: Read Chapters 14, 15, and 16. Write on fantastic chart. Have students write three similes to describe what a feast would be like to them if they hadnt eaten in three days. Homework: Read Chapters 17 and 18. Write on fantastic chart. Write vocabulary words in L.A. notebook impudent (72), swiftly (73), hollow (73), ravenous (76), succulent (76), colossal (77), famished (80) ODDS = first 4; EVENS = last 3 Day 7 Review vocabulary. Quiz: Chapters 11-18. Mini-lesson: Setting. Rural v. Urban. In groups of 2 or 3 pick one scene from the story and rewrite it as if it were in an urban setting. Do one as a whole group to model first. Example: Instead of going into Beans secret cider cellar, if he were in the city, it would have been Beans corner store basement where he kept all the pop. Students share paragraphs with the class. Day 8 Mini-lesson: Main Idea and details. Students make a story

board of the 6 main idea from the story. The first square is the beginning and the last square is the end. Homework: Finish story board. Day 9 Presentation of story board a la science fair. Half the class walks around and looks at the boards while the authors/artists share then switch. Review fantastic chart. Begin extended response in class. Mrs. Fox thinks Mr. Fox is fantastic. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer using examples from the text as well as your own words. Homework: Finish extended response question. Day 10 Vocabulary quiz. Fill in the sentence about the story using a word from the list. Bonus Question: Roald Dahl uses many synonyms for the word fantastic throughout the book. Can you name 3? Watch Fantastic Mr. Fox Movie. Homework: None
