One of them is to explain experiences or routine activities that we have and are still
doing and become a habit, or explain the conditions in which we no longer do these
experiences or habits.

Phrases that can be used to describe the situation above are "used to" and "be used to".
Then what's the difference? To answer that question,

Based on the background of the problem, we formulate the contents of this paper as

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Be Used to

Be used to use to describe an activity that becomes a habit for someone. The word "be" here can
be replaced with is, am, are, was and were depending on the subject and what tense we use.

To make it easier to remember, you can also remember that it is used to express something that
you are familiar with. Get used to usually using verb-ing. Get used to also has the same meaning
as accustomed, which is accustomed/usual.

The word used for this can be used for past or past events, present or present, and future or future
or future events.

There are patterns or rules that you can use in making the writing used, namely:

+ Positive Sentences : Subject + to be + used to + object

- Negative Sentence : Subject + be not + used to + object

? Question sentence : Be + subject + used to + object

Example Sentences using 'be used to':

+ Positive Subject : She is used to students.

- Negative : She isn't used to students.

? Interrogative : Is she used to students?

Notes:

Object can be a noun (noun) or a gerund.

3
Example:

1. Randi is used to living alone

(Randi is used to living alone)

2. Ryan used to smoke all the time

(Ryan used to smoke all the time)

3. Don't worry, Randi is used to driving for hours. He has worked as a taxi driver for many years.
(Don't worry, Randi is used to driving for a long time, he worked as a taxi driver for
several years)

4. Ina is used to getting up early

(Ina is used to getting up early/morning)

In general, the be used to function is to say that an event or event is a common or normal occurrence
or event, but is not unusual.

Example:

I've lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years, so I'm used to the bumpy roads here.

(I've lived here for over 20 years so I'm used to the winding roads here)

B. Used To

Used to is used to express an activity or event in the future or a past truth that at this time has never
been done. To make it easier to remember, you can remember used to as the word "first" in
Indonesian.

4
Just like be used to, the word used to also has patterns or rules that can be used to make sentences.
The rules or patterns of used to can be seen below:

+ Positive Sentence: Subject + used + to infinitive

- Negative Sentence : Subject + did not + use + to infinitive

? Questions (Interrogative): Did + subject + use + to infinitive

Notes:

Used to is always followed by to infinitive

Example of sentences:

1. She used to love me but not anymore

(He used to love me, but not anymore)

2. I used to live in Bandung

(I used to live in Bandung)

3. They used to wanna hear us.

(They used to listen to us)

Used to can also be used in interrogative and negative sentences. Consider the following example:

1. No, I never used to read comic book

(No, I never read comic books)

2. Did you use to read comic book every day?

(Did you read comic books every day?)

3. No, I didn't use to read comic book

(No, I never read comic books)

At its core, used to has two main functions:

5
To say something that used to happen in the past but doesn't happen anymore in the present.

Example:

1. Mr. Bowman used to bring water his wife tomb with water but since he died 2 years ago,
the tomb is now dry.
(Mr. Bowman always doused his wife's grave with water, but since he died 2 years ago, his
wife's grave has always been dry.)

2. I used to take a bus to school, but now my father give me a ride.

(I used to go to college by bus, but now my dad is giving me a ride.)

Using "used to" to express something that was true in the past but not anymore.

Example:

1. There used to be a little park with a treehouse near my house but now there is not.
(There used to be a small garden with a tree house near my house but now it's not there
anymore)

2. My sister used to like Durian but now she does not.

(My sister used to like Durian but now she doesn't like it)

EXAMPLE SENTENCES USING “USED TO” :

Subject + used + to I used to teach at kindergarten.

infinitive

When we were young, we used

to watch movie until midnight.

6
Subject + didn't + I didn't use to teach at
use + to infinitive kindergarten.

When we were young, we didn't

use to watch movie until
midnight.

Did + subject + Did you use to teach at

use + to infinitive? kindergarten?

Did you use to watch movie

until midnight?

C. Redudancy

What is redudancy?

A sentences in which some information is unnecessarily repeated is called redudant. Given here
are some word combination that are always redudant, and thus should NEVER be used.

Redundancy is when words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or concepts are repeated without a
reason. Redundancy is the usage of two or more words that have the same meaning together, such
as "sufficient enough." When a modifier's meaning is already present in the word it modifies, such
as in the phrase "melt together," we might also say that something is redundant.

When we write, we should make an effort to be as precise and clear as possible. Readers are more
likely to read what we write if we learn how to communicate without using extraneous words.

Why it is not a good idea to use repetitive words.

7
Every word you employ should improve the content of your work. When you employ redundant
language, you combine two or more terms that have similar meanings. No new information is
added by them. Repetition stretches your work and bores your audience. People are likely to quit
reading completely if the sentences are too long.

Example:
NO REDUDANCY REPAIR WORD
1 Advance forward, Advance, proceed and progress all mean “to move in a
Proceed forward forward direction, “thus, the word forward is not necessary.
Progress forward
2 Return back, Return and revert mean “to go back or send back” so back
Revert back is not necessary.
3 Sufficent enough These words are identical; one or other should be used
4 Complete together Complete means “ to take part in a consest against others”
5 Reason … because That words indicate the same thing; the correct pattern is
reason … that
6 Join together Join means “to bring togerther”, “to put together” or
“become a part or member of”, “to take place among”
7 Repeat again Repeat means “to say again” [re-usually means “again”]
8 New innovations Innovations means “a new idea”
9 Matinee performance Matinee means “a performance in the afternoon”
10 Same identical The words are identical
11 Two twins Twins means “two sibling”
12 The time when The time and when are indicate the same thing; one or other
should be used
13 The place where The place and where indicate the same thing; one or other
should be used

CLOSING

A. Conclusion

Be used to is expresses something that you are accustomed to; are familiar with and accept as
normal. Then used to is expresses the idea that something was an old habit that stopped in the past.
It indicates that something was often repeated in the past, but it is not usually done now. Last
redundancy is when words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or concepts are repeated without a
reason.

B. Suggestion
Then basically we have to know the purpose of making a paper other than that and most
importantly we have to know and master the material that we describe. We must know the
placement of "used to" and "be used to" before using the word. then we must know the meaning
and meaning of a word so as not to cause "redundancy"
