1. Motivation
So, before we proceed to our main lesson for today,
let us first have a short game, which is called GUESS THE

You just have to arrange the jumbled letters to reveal the
correct word. If you are the first to type in the correct
answer in our chat box, then you will get the point.

So, let us move on to our first official word. This time, the

decoding all the words! For those who did not get points

having another one, so make sure you listen carefully to Okay, ma’am!
our discussion so you will be able to answer the
questions. You may also bring out a notebook and pen so
that while I am discussing the lesson, you will be able to
jot down the important details of our topic.

2. Presentation
Our main lesson is under 2nd Quarter: Prevention of
Substance Use and Abuse, specifically, we will be
discussing the 6 Classifications of Drugs of Abuse.
C. Discussion
First is what we call GATEWAY DRUGS. So why is it
called Gateway Drugs? Gateway into what? Any idea?
Ma’am, I think these are drugs that will be a way for
someone to try more dangerous drugs.
Alright, that is a good idea. So basically, they are called
Gateway drugs because these are drugs that a non-drug
user might try which can lead him or her to more
dangerous drugs. The most common Gateway drugs are
Cigarettes and Alcohols which are readily available in
stores but are not allowed to be sold to minors.

Second classification is what we call DEPRESSANTS. Based

on the picture shown, what do you think does depressant
Ma’am, based on the picture, I think it makes someone
drugs do to a person?
feel tired or depressed, or have low energy.
Okay that is a good observation.
It is also known as “downers” because it slows down a
person’s central nervous system. It relaxes muscles and
nerves.
Doctors prescribe depressant drugs to help persons to be
less angry, less stressed, or less tensed. It also makes
patients feel sleepy and light-headed.
Depressants include alcohol, barbiturates, and
tranquilizers.

Third type is STIMULANTS. From the given picture, what

Ma’am, I think stimulants gives people high energy,
do you think is this drug’s effect to our body?
unlike depressants.
Okay, that’s right!
If Depressants are known as ‘downers’, Stimulants are
known as “uppers” or “speeders”. It has the opposite
effect of Depressants because these drugs speed up a
person’s central nervous system. A person can stay
awake for longer periods under its influence.
The most common example is Caffeine, which is found in
soft drinks, energy drinks, coffee, tea and chocolate. But
it doesn’t necessarily mean that if you drink coffee, soft
drinks or eat chocolate, you will be addicted, that’s why
you should drink and eat these foods in moderation.
Some illegal stimulants are Cocaine, Nicotine, and
Methamphetamine or Shabu.

Moving on, the fourth kind is called NARCOTICS. Any idea

on what this drug can do based on the picture?
Ma’am, as I can see in the picture, Narcotics makes
people feel no pain.
That is correct!
Narcotic drugs are known as “painkillers” because it
relieves pain and induce sleepiness.
They are given to patients with mental disorders and
those in severe pain, but only in moderation and if
necessary, because too much and wrong use of these
drugs may cause body organ failures.
Some illegal Narcotic drugs are Heroin and Marijuana,
which if taken wrong may cause overdose leading to
coma and death.

Next, the 5th classification is what we call

HALLUCINOGENS. From the root word “hallucinate”,
what do you think does this drug to a person?
Ma’am, from the name of it, I think it makes a person
Okay, that is correct! hallucinate and imagine things that are not real.
The name Hallucinogens came from the word
“hallucination” which means to see illusions or things
that are not real.
These are drugs which distorts reality and facts. It affects
all senses and makes a user see, hear, and feel things that
do not exist and are not real.
Long term use may cause Psychosis which is a mental
disorder in which reality is twisted.
Some examples are Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD),
Psilocybin, and Mescaline.

The last classification is called INHALANTS. From the word

“inhale”, do you have any idea of examples of these
drugs?
Ma’am, I think these are drugs that people take through
Okay, good answers! inhaling, like rugby, spray paint, acetone, and other
From the word “inhale” which means to ‘breathe in’, chemical substances.
these drugs are taken in a nasal way.
These are found in ordinary household chemical products
such as acetone, Rugby, Spray Paint, Cleaning Fluids, and
Air conditioner Fluid (freon).
Continuous use and abuse lead to delusion, brain
damage, liver damage, coma, and death.

IV. Generalization
So those are the six classifications of drugs of abuse.
Now, I want to know if you can recall all those 6
classifications and their effects. Can someone give at least
two kinds of drug and tell something about it? Ma’am first is gateway drugs like cigarettes and alcohols,
the other one I recall is the Stimulants that give people
Okay, very good! Anyone who can give another answer? high energy.

Ma’am the others I recall are the Depressants which

makes people have low energy like alcohol and

Do you have any questions or clarifications so far? pain and induce sleepiness.

Okay, that’s good to hear!

I hope you all listened attentively in our discussion, None so far, ma’am.
because like a said earlier, we will be having an
assessment to see if you learned something from today’s
lesson.

Ma’am, they are called Inhalant Drugs.
Good job, everyone! You all learned from our discussion.
Now let’s proceed to the Assessment.

VI. Assessment
In this assessment, we will be using what I like to call a”
Recitation Wheel”.
So basically, I will be asking questions from our discussion
and the wheel will determine who will answer that
question. You will all be selected randomly. If you are
able to answer it correctly, then you will get a point. If
the given answer is wrong, then the wheel will spin again
to select another student to answer, until the correct
answer is given.
So, are you all ready?
Okay, let us start with question number 1.

These are any substances or chemicals which when taken Yes, ma’am, we are ready!

point for your correct answer! Very good!
Okay, next question.
This type of drug is administered to those patients who Thank you, ma’am!

(Spin the wheel)

Okay, ______, what is your answer?

Let us see if you got it right.

And the correct answer is DEPRESSANTS. Good job,
________ you got the correct answer! Ma’am, my answer is Depressant drugs.

Now, on to the final question.

These are drugs that distort reality and create
hallucinations to a person. Thank you, ma’am!

(Spin the wheel)

Okay, ________, what do you think is the correct
answer?

Alright, let’s see if you’re correct.

The correct answer is HALLUCINOGENS. You’re correct, My answer ma’am is Hallucinogens.
_______! Very good!

Good job, everyone! That would be all for our

assessment! I hope you all learned something today! Thank you, ma’am!
