A Detailed Lesson Plan in Teaching Mathematics 3 MELC-BASED WEEK 6

This document contains a detailed lesson plan for a mathematics class on symmetry. The lesson plan aims to help students identify and visualize symmetry in their environment and in designs. It includes objectives, subject matter, procedures, and details interactions between the teacher and students. The teacher uses examples, pictures, and activities like matching halves of objects to help students understand and observe symmetry. The lesson teaches students about line of symmetry and provides examples of symmetrical objects in nature, homes, and designs.

A Detailed Lesson Plan

In Teaching Mathematics 3
Week 6

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

Identifies and visualizes symmetry in the environment and in design. M3GE-IIIg-7.3

I. Objectives
1. Distinguish symmetry objects in environment and in designs through surroundings;
2. Conceptualize the different images of symmetrical objects through creativity concept such as drawing, painting,
and cut out papers; and
3. Show appreciation of symmetrical objects based on their assigned activity task.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

A. Review
Good morning, class!
Good morning, Ma’am.
Let us now first take a look back on our last
discussion. What have we discussed last
meeting? Does anyone remember about it?
Our last lesson was all about Parallel,
Intersecting and Perpendicular Lines, ma’am.
Very good! Can you tell something about
parallel lines? Yes, Lynzee?
Parallel lines are line that do not meet,
That’s right. How about intersecting lines, ma’am.
Althea?

Intersecting lines are lines that do cross or

Great! How about perpendicular lines? Yes, intersect which shares a common point, ma’am.

Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect

Nice! It seems that all of you really or cross one another at 90 degrees or right angle.
understood the three types of lines. I guess all of
you are
now ready on one of the exciting part of our
class today.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Motivation

Now, you are going to have an activity

entitled, “Finding My Other Half”. I will give you
the half pictures of different objects and you
need to find the match of the picture to your
classmates in a silent and respectful manner. I
will give you 5 minutes to find the missing piece
and afterwards, you’re going to present the
matched pictures in front. Do you understand,
children?
Yes, ma’am.

The first one who can be able to find its

match will get a prize. So are you now ready,
children? Yes, ma’am.

You may now start finding the other half in

one, two, three, go!
(The children started to find the other half
of the picture)
Since the time is over, I hope that you were
able to find the other half. Were you able to find
it, children?
Yes, ma’am.
You many now present the picture in front
with your partner, children. The first one to
present are the pupils from the first row then up
to the last row. Is it clear, children?
Yes, ma’am.

Good!
(All children presented the matched
pictures)
Okay. Let’s give ourselves a good job clap!

Did you find our activity interesting

children?
Yes, ma’am.
Based on your activity, what have you
observed? Yes, Althea?
We have observed that half of the picture is
proportion to the other side, ma’am.
Nice! What else?

They have the same size and shape, ma’am.

Very good! So, settle yourselves as we are
about to tackle a new lesson.

2. Presentation
So we will now proceed to our exciting
lesson for today. Today we will be discussing
about symmetry.

Can you repeat our lesson today? Yes,

Nelson? Our lesson for today is all about Symmetry
in the Environment and in Design, ma’am.

Great!

3. Discussion
So to better understand more about
symmetry, let us find out first its definition.

Can someone read the definition of

symmetry?
(Teacher will present the definition of
symmetry (Pupils will read the definition)
Symmetry is a mirror image of a specific
objects or designs when cut in half. It means that
one shape is identical to the other shape.

What do we mean by symmetry again? Yes,

Larden?
Symmetry is a mirror image of a specific
objects or designs when cut in half, ma’am.
(The teacher presented a symmetrical
figure)

Very good! The imaginary axis or line along

which the figure can be folded to obtain the
symmetrical halves is called the line of symmetry.

What do we call again the imaginary axis or

line along which the figure can be folded to

obtain the symmetrical halves?
It is called Line of Symmetry, ma’am.
So can you give a sample object of
symmetry that you see in environment,
Aphrodite?
A sample object of symmetry that I can see
in the environment is leaves, ma’am.
Alright, very good! How about inside your
home, can you give me some example of
symmetry that can be seen and found inside your
house? A sample object of symmetry that I can see
in our home is picture frame, ma’am.

Nice! How about symmetry in design? Can

you give me an any design that can be a
symmetry?
A design that can be a symmetry is a pattern
ma’am.

Good job! So basically, symmetry can be

found in our environment and in different
designs in nature. So let’s take a look on the
different examples of symmetry that can be
found in the environment and in designs.

(The teacher presented the pictures of

different examples of symmetry)

What picture is this, class?

That is a picture of a flower, ma’am.

When we cut it in half, does it have a mirror

image, class?
Yes, ma’am.
There is also an imaginary axis to obtain
symmetrical halves.

Is this flower an example of symmetry?

Yes, ma’am.
And flower is a part of a…?
Plant, ma’am.
What is the importance of plants to
humans?
They give off oxygen, food, medicine,
ma’am.
You’re right! Plants are useful in order for us
human to survive and breath.

Now let’s move on to the next picture.

What is the name of this animal?

Butterfly, ma’am.
Is butterfly an example of symmetry?
Yes, ma’am.
Why did you say yes?
Because when we cut it in half, it has a
mirror image, ma’am.
Very good!

Let’s proceed to the next picture.

Symmetry is everywhere. At the beach, we

can also see different symmetries just like a shell.

Children, is this shell an example of

symmetry?
Yes, ma’am.
You’re right!

What food is this?

An ice cream, ma’am.
Can you find symmetry in this ice cream?
Yes, ma’am.
Right! We can conclude that there are many
symmetries found in our environment or nature.

What do you think is the importance of

symmetry in nature?
Symmetry is nature's artwork creates
harmony and balance, ma’am.

Greta! Do you understand now what

symmetry is, children? Yes, ma’am.

Good job!

4. Generalization

What was our lesson for this morning again,

children?
Our lesson was all about symmetry, ma’am.

Very good! Kindly repeat the definition of

symmetry. Yes, Georjieo?
Symmetry is a mirror image of a specific
objects or designs when cut in half, ma’am. It
means that one shape is identical to the other
shape.
What is the imaginary axis or line along
which the figure can be folded to obtain the
symmetrical halves Very good.

Can you give other examples of symmetrical

objects aside from the examples given a while
back?
Scissors, ma’am.
Great! Last one, yes, Tristan?
Eyeglasses, ma’am.
Nice! So those are examples of symmetry. Is
it clear?

Yes, ma’am.

5. Fixing Skills

So before we totally end our discussion

today, I prepared an activity for you. I have here
different pictures of things and objects we can
found in our environment or nature. Kindly pick a
picture and put it on the thumbs up column on
the board if it is symmetrical while put the
picture on the thumbs down column if it is
asymmetrical. Do you understand?

Yes, ma’am.
