ABSTRACT
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are currently the main pathway to decarbonize the transportation sector and
significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Electric cars are crucial when trying to cope with the critically
negative effects of climate change and are predicted to be the next disruptive market force for
transportation and technology. They have the potential to revolutionize how energy is used, created, and
redirected. The market for EVs is expanding. However, these EVs charging their batteries from the power
grid can positively affect the environment and society as a whole and may cause severe effects if not
managed properly. There is a significant need to find alternate charging infrastructure. This paper
discusses the potential negative impacts of EV charging on electric power systems and summarizes the
various innovative technologies for charging and the future research topics in this exciting area.
Negative impacts from the dominant use of petroleum-based transportation have propelled the globe
towards electrified transportation. With this thrust, many technological challenges are being encountered
and addressed, one of which is the development and availability of fast-charging technologies. To
compete with petroleum-based transportation, electric vehicle (EV) battery charging times need to
decrease to the 5–10 min range. This paper provides a review of EV fast charging technologies and the
impacts on the battery systems, including heat management and associated limitations. In addition, the
paper presents promising new approaches and opportunities for power electronic converter topologies and
systems level research to advance the state-of-the-art in fast-charging.
Research in electric vehicles (EVs) has observed a tremendous upsurge in recent years. However, reviews
that analyze and present the demand and development of EVs comprehensively are still inadequate, and
this integrative review is an effort to fill that gap. This study has revealed many thought-provoking
understandings related to specific developments, specifically global demand and growth of EVs along
with electricity and battery demand, current technological developments in EVs, energy storage
technologies, and charging strategies. It also details the next generation of EVs and their technological
advancements, such as wireless power transfer. The development of a smart city concept by EV
implementation added a new aspect to this review. The summary would be advantageous to both scholars
and policymakers, as there has been a lack of integrative reviews that assessed EV’s global demand.
