1 Scope of application
These packing instructions shall be adhered to both by the supplier, if he is responsible for rendering the
packing services, (hereinafter referred to as "supplier") and by any packing company commissioned sepa-
rately by the customer to render packing services on the supplier's premises, on the said company's own
premises or at any other location (hereinafter referred to as the "packing contractor"), the applicable HPE
1)
packaging guidelines to be considered as minimum standard. In all other respects the customer's General
Conditions of Purchase shall apply. Any special conditions agreed to in the written order or in any enclosures
of the same shall have precedence over the present packing instructions.
1) HPE = The Registered Federal Association for Wooden Packages, Pallets and Export Packaging, Bonn
The supplier shall be notified of the marking of the individual components, such notification being sent with the
order and enquiry enclosures or with the customer's shipping instructions.
All markings shall be listed in the appropriate packing lists to enable the materials to be identified upon deliv-
ery.
4 Types of packing
4.1 General
The design and construction of the packing, whilst remaining within reasonable economic limits, shall allow for
loads (static or dynamic) occurring during transport, handling and storage and shall also comply with the re-
quirements of the transport operator, the country of destination and the customer's own specifications.
The construction of the packing described shall allow handling by crane or fork-lift truck and shall ensure that
the packing can be properly secured during transport. Lifting and sling points shall be attached by the supplier
/ packing contractor.
Any special lifting devices required for equipment / packed units awaiting shipping (e.g. due to an abnormal
centre of gravity) shall be provided by the supplier, even if the items have been packed by a packing company
commissioned by the customer. The customer shall be furnished with proof that the official certificate covering
cargo handling gear / test certificate has been issued before transportation can begin.
The cases shall be provided with skids and subskids (slinging reinforcement elements). The number of skids
required and their width depend on the overall weight, length and breadth of the packed unit. The sling points
(bottom/side and side / lid) of cases with a gross weight in excess of 5 t shall be provided with angle irons
(min. 3 mm thick) to prevent the cables from cutting into the cases. The front-end timber of all cases weighing
more than 1000 kg shall be firmly bolted to the skids (Figure 6).
The cases shall be braced and reinforced to withstand any load (static or dynamic) likely to occur during
transportation by rail, road or ship (rail: 4 g, road: 1.2 g, ship: 1.1 g). Measures shall be taken to prevent the
item from shifting within the packed unit (screwing together, bolting to the bottom of the case etc.).
The cases shall be lined with waterproofing materials (e.g. jute board or bituminised paper).
The case lid shall be designed to prevent water penetration and shall therefore be lined on the inside with
polythene or aluminium compound foil. A layer of hardboard, plywood or plastic shall also be nailed to the lid
to prevent the formation of "water pockets".
The finished cases shall not be stored outdoors without additional protection and shall be covered with tarpau-
lins if they cannot be stored indoors.

Page 4
ES 10 MS-ST-01 : 2002-03
4.3 Crates
In principle, the design criteria applied to cases also apply to crates, with the exception of the design of the
outer surfaces. These surfaces shall provide a sufficient area for large-surface marking. If necessary, some
side surfaces shall be boarded completely to provide the space required for such marking. The ratio of the
boarded surfaces to the open surfaces shall generally lie between 1:1 and 2:1.
The boards shall not be less than 10 cm wide. All four sides shall be reinforced with diagonal braces. The front
ends of the crates shall be boarded completely if there is a risk of individual items being pushed out.
Page 5
ES 10 MS-ST-01 : 2002-03
The subskids shall be positioned such that the packages can be handled by both cranes and fork-lift trucks.
The subskids shall be at least 10 cm high.
Any transverse subskids (60 mm to 80 mm thick) shall be bolted or securely nailed to the longitudinal or in-
termediate skids.
4.5 Bundles
Any items of equipment which do not need to be packed in cases or crates, but whose size prevents them
from being shipped as separate packages, shall be packed to form cubic packages using channels irons se-
cured by threaded rods and screw shackles. Lock nuts shall be used to prevent the screws from coming
loose. The closures shall be so tightly fastened that the packed items cannot slide out even when loaded in a
slanted position.
Each package shall have at least 3 clips which shall be positioned no more than 2.5 m apart. The distance
between the last clip and the end of the bundle shall not exceed 1 m.
Page 6
ES 10 MS-ST-01 : 2002-03
Figure 9. Bundles
4.6 Cradles
The equipment is secured by iron straps with elastic underlays. The straps shall be screwed to the cradles
and should not be able to slip. The screws shall be prevented from coming loose.
Page 7
ES 10 MS-ST-01 : 2002-03
The pipes shall be preserved in accordance with the customer's technical specifications prior to packing. Car-
bon steel and stainless steel pipes shall always be packed separately.
4.10 Containers
The container in itself is not more than a transportation aid and has limited suitability as a type of packing.
Page 9
ES 10 MS-ST-01 : 2002-03
Prior to being placed in containers, the items of equipment shall be suitably packed for loading and unloading
and for any additional storage periods required. The preservation of equipment is governed unconditionally by
2)
the regulations stated in section 2. As regards container loading, the IMO/ILO / UN ECE guidelines for the
packing of cargo transport units (CTUs) shall be strictly observed.
The containers used, especially shipper’s owned containers, shall conform with current IICL regulations (In-
3)
stitue of International Container Lessors) and shall have a valid CSC plaque / permit for the scheduled pe-
riod of use.
Containers may only be used for packing if written permission has been obtained from the customer.
5 Dangerous goods
The packing of dangerous goods is governed by the law covering the transportation of dangerous goods and
the current regulations and ordinances enacted by the respective carriers.
To ensure that the correct procedures for the shipment and transport of dangerous goods are followed during
road and rail transportation to the shipping port/airport and during further transport by ship/aeroplane, the
supplier shall ensure that the appropriate goods classification is included with the packing lists, i.e.:
• UN number (UN = United Nations),
• class, code number,
• technical designation and proper shipping name (not the trade name),
• page from the English/German IMDG code,
5)
• EmS no. (pamphlet no. for procedures in the event of an accident) ,
• reference to “marine pollutant”,
• characteristics of the dangerous goods, and the flash point for all goods of class 3 and for certain goods of
classes 6.1, 8 and 9,
• identification number of the package.
This information shall be presented in writing together with the safety data sheet according to EC Directive
91/155/EEC.
Depending on the type of transport, the packing shall comply with the UN standard and be approved for dan-
gerous goods.
A “declaration of assuming responsibility” required for the transport of the dangerous goods shall be compiled
and signed by the customer.
The supplier/packing contractor's attention is drawn to the fact that he has sole responsibility for ensuring that
the above instructions are duly carried out and that he shall be held liable for any consequences resulting from
their non-fulfilment.
6 Marking
The packages shall be marked using a stencil and waterproof, light-fast, high-contrast dyes. The size of the
letters depends on the overall dimensions of the package, but shall not, as a rule, be smaller than 40 mm.
Metal and plastic plates may not be used for cases and crates unless permission has been granted by the
customer. If the items of equipment have not been packed or have been packed on cradles, the marking shall
be applied directly to the items themselves.
The packed units shall be marked on the two side walls and the gross weight of the unit shall be stated on the lid.
Bundles shall be marked on their longitudinal sides. Metal plates attached to waterproof plywood or wooden
plates may be used for this purpose. Each plate shall be attached separately.
Marking is directly related to the order in hand and is stated in the shipping instructions.
The packed units shall always be marked with the chain symbol (sling here) and with the win arrows (this side
up).
Packages requiring special handling shall also be marked with the appropriate international symbols:
The centre of gravity symbol shall be marked on all four sides of all packages measuring in excess of 1m and
/ or weighing in excess of 5000 kg.
7 Abnormal dimensions
To facilitate the planning and execution of large capacity or heavy goods transport, the supplier shall send the
customer 5 copies of true-to-scale dimensional outlines (scale 1:25 - three-sided view) as soon as possible, at
the very latest 4 months prior to shipping. This applies to all items which are larger or heavier than:
gross weight of individual item : 20 tons and / or
dimensions : 1200 × 240 × 240 cm (length × width × height)
The dimensional outlines shall be binding and provide the following information:
a) external dimensions of the packed unit in the position in which it is to be transported
b) longitudinal and side view
c) gross and net weight in kg
d) centres of gravity in longitudinal and transverse directions
e) sling points (and special criteria to be considered)
f) type of packing planned or required (clearly plotted)
Any regulations which form part of the contract-specific shipping instructions and which differ from the present
packing instructions shall have precedence over the said packing instructions.
8 Liability
8.1 The supplier / packing contractor is obliged to perform the packing services with the due care of a
professional packing company. The supplier / packing contractor shall only use new packing materials.
Page 11

items from the moment he takes them into his possession.
8.6 The packing contractor's liability shall be limited to € 125,000 per claim.
8.7 The customer shall take out transport insurance. The transport insurance shall come into effect from
the moment the items to be packed leave the supplier's area of responsibility, and shall cover the usual risks
which might occur in transit or during a period of intermediate storage.
8.8 If the packing performed by the supplier / packing contractor is faulty or deficient, the customer can
arrange for repair work to be performed up to a maximum of € 2,500 at the supplier's / packing contractor's
expense and without his prior consent. Any repair work in excess of this amount shall be agreed by the sup-
plier / packing contractor prior to commencing the said repair work.
8.9 With the exception of the defects stated in section 8.8, the customer shall notify the supplier / packing
contractor immediately of any damage and, as far as this is within the customer's power, shall grant him the
opportunity to eliminate the damage.
8.10.2 The supplier's guarantee period results from the regulations agreed to in the order and / or other con-
ditions which are an integral part of the contract.

UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
1 Scope
This Engineering Specification (ES) applies to the design and construction of industrial and chemical plants. It
contains requirements for vessels and equipment as well as their accessories of glass-fibre reinforced plastics
based on unsaturated polyester resins, with a resin-rich inner coating (chemical-resistant coating) or, if pro-
vided with lining, with a lining of thermoplastics.
3 Requirements
The structural design of vessels and equipment shall comply with UN 2002-03 as well as with EN 13121-1 to -4.
The strength values must not be less than the min. strength values listed in Table 2.
UF 09 EN-F02 M01 E 06-12
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
Table 2. Strength values (minimum values) for carrying laminates at room temperature
Strength values

Tensile strength KZ 100
Bending strength KB 130
Modulus of elasticity in tensile stress EZ 8000
Modulus of elasticity in bending stress EB 7200
Interlaminar shear strength 8
Interlaminar tensile strength 4
The mechanical strength must meet the operating, working and test requirements outlined in the DS. The
inner coating and/or lining is not taken into consideration for the stress analysis. AD 2000-Merkblatt N 1 ap-
plies to pressure vessels according to the PED, whereas AD 2000-Merkblatt N 1 applies mutatis mutandis to
all other vessels.
The rating and design of the vessels and equipment and their accessories shall take into consideration all
forces affecting the vessels and equipment, including the weight of the insulation, the effect of the supporting
structures, wind loads, earthquake loads, any dynamic loads, the effects of hydrostatic tests and of the loads
encountered during assembly and transport.
Collars and flanges shall meet the requirements as per DIN 16966-7; DIN 16966-1 applies to nozzles.
3.2 Fabrication
For the personnel ordered for fabrication, certificates of the welder qualification (DVS 2212-1) and laminator
qualification (DVS 2220) have to exist and be documented. The processing instructions of the manufacturers
of the resins and semi-finished products shall be followed. The entire laminate structure should be built up by
the wet-in-wet method. If this is not possible, prolonged interruptions of the lamination work may involve the
risk that proper bonding cannot be achieved owing to hardening of the surface. If necessary, the surface must
be roughened prior to continuing the lamination work.
The wall structure of vessels with lining is subdivided into lining, bonding layer, carrying body and surface
covering.
The application of the chopped fibre/polymer spray-up method and the use of moulded covers and heads are
UF 09 EN-F02 M01 E 06-12
only permitted if approved by the orderer. The use of pure chopped-strand laminates is not permitted.
3.2.1.1 Lining
For components with a lining of thermoplastics, the lining structure shall be fabricated first. Care shall be taken
to keep the number of welded joints to a minimum. Preference shall be given to thermoformed and/or ex-
truded or injection-moulded component elements. Adhesive joints are only permitted if approved by the or-
derer.
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
In the forming and folding processes it is to be ensured that the mean bending radii correspond to at least
twice the wall thickness. After thermoforming, the thickness of the wall shall not fall short of the specified wall
thickness.
Adhesion promoters which have been adapted to the properties of the lining and of the carrying body may
additionally be used to improve adhesion. The procedure selected shall be indicated in the drawings.
The glass mass of the inner coating shall be between 25 % and 35 % (according to EN 13121-2, section 4)
and be distributed uniformly over the entire thickness and circumference.
Measures shall be taken to prevent the curing of the inner coating from being affected by air.
Linear misalignment shall be avoided, the misalignment of the edges may, however, be 30 % of the wall thick-
ness up to a maximum of 3 mm if an inner overlaminate is possible, and max. 1 mm if this is not possible. The
gap width may be 0.5 % of the diameter, max., however, 2 mm. The annular gap shall be filled with a glass-
fibre-reinforced resin filler of equivalent type.
All butt joints shall be fabricated with a laminate according to section 3.2.2.7, 3.2.2.8 and 3.2.2.9.
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
The necessary overlaminate shall start with at least one textile glass mat. Its further build-up shall consist of a
laminate according to section 3.2.2.7.
For laminated joints on the outside of the vessel, the carrying laminate shall be followed by a surface layer
according to section 3.2.2.8.
For laminated joints inside of vessels without lining, the carrying laminate shall be followed by a surface layer
according to section 3.2.2.9.
For nozzle sizes ≥ DN 50 and vessel diameters ≥ 600 mm, an overlaminate according to section 3.2.2.9 shall
be applied to the inside of vessels without lining.
Parts attached by lamination shall be made of stainless steel (1.4571, 1.4541 or 1.4404 according to
EN 10088-1 to -3).
3.2.2.4 Linings
All permanent joints of thermoplastic linings are welded joints. Welded joints shall be made by qualified weld-
ers only. The welder shall be controlled by qualified supervising personnel and prove their qualification by
inspections and test welds to be repeated at regular intervals (see DVS 2212-1, EN 13121-3 Annex F).
Welding of thermoplastics shall be done in compliance with DIN 16960-1 and DVS 2206 in particular which
contain data on the welding procedures, fillers, types of welds and bead sequence and quality of the welded
joints.
The structural design of the welded joint shall be selected according to DVS 2205-3.
The following welding procedures are allowed: hot-gas string-bead welding with a round wire (WZ), heated-
tool butt welding (HS) and hot-gas extrusion welding (WE). Fins and reinforcements may also be welded with
section wire.
As far as possible, the higher-ranking welding procedure shall be used in each case (see DVS 2203-1). The
welds shall be shown in the workshop drawings by indicating the welding procedure as per DIN 1910-3, with
the relevant symbol for the form of the weld as per EN 22553, including the number of the individual welding
wires and classification group according to DVS 2202-1.
The quality of the weld shall be in line with DVS 2202-1. In deviation from DVS 2202-1, however, a misalign-
ment of 25 % of the wall thickness (max. 1 mm) is permitted.
The min. permissible misalignment of longitudinal welds is v = 6 × wall thickness but at least 50 mm.
The surfaces of the parts to be joined by welding shall be free of dirt, moisture, grease and chips. Cleaning,
drying or machining shall be performed immediately prior to welding. Mating surfaces shall also be machined
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
Prior to lamination, the welds shall be covered with permanently conductive carbon fibre non-wovens to permit
inspection of the welds at a later date.
Proof of the quality of the welds shall be furnished by determining the welding efficiency factor in a bending
test according to DVS 2203-5, in a creep tensile test according to DVS 2203-4 and in a tensile test according
to DVS 2203-2. The values listed in Table 4 are minimum values to be attained.
3.2.2.5 Pre-treatment
The surfaces of all parts to be joined shall be roughened down to the first glass layer and thoroughly cleaned
of dust. Impurities shall be removed by grinding immediately prior to lamination.
3.2.2.6 Sealing
Cutting edges which cannot be overlaminated shall be sealed with a resin of equivalent type. Measures shall
be taken to prevent the curing process from being affected by air.
In the case of vessels with lining, the lining shall cover the entire sealing face and be fabricated without seams
by crimping as far as this is possible. The thickness of the lining on the sealing face shall not fall short of the
specified wall thickness of the remaining lining.
Vertical vessels and equipment with dished heads shall be provided with skirts. Vessels and equipment shall
be provided with lifting lugs which are located in the centroidal axis.
The reinforcing elements shall be of the same material as the basic structure. Other materials shall be agreed
upon.
Steel parts coated with laminate shall be made of stainless steel (1.4571, 1.4541 or 1.4404 according to
EN 10088-1 to -3).
If the used resin system of vessels without lining requires aging at an elevated temperature, this is to be
agreed upon.
Location, scope and type of repairs which also involved the chemical-resistant coating or lining, shall be en-
tered into the fabrication documents and forwarded to the orderer.
3.5 Materials
3.5.1 Linings
Depending on the chemical and thermal stress, different linings are used. The suitability of the lining material
specified in the purchase order shall be checked and confirmed in writing by the manufacturer.
3.5.2 UP resins
A resin with the best resistance to the chemical and thermal stress involved shall be used. The heat distortion
temperature (HDT point) of the resin shall be at least 20 °C above the design temperature. The requested
type is specified in the purchase order. The resin type is specified in the workshop drawing. The resin used for
the laminate structure shall neither be dyed nor pigmented. Resin top coats are to contain a UV stabilizer. If a
pigmented top coat is requested, the coating shall not be applied until the vessel inspection has finished.
Polyester powder constitutes a suitable binder, whereas it is not allowed to use emulsion-bound mats.
Metacrylsilane constitutes a suitable size.
3.5.4 Fillers
The resins used shall not contain any fillers except for those employed for influencing the viscosity (max. 5 %
by mass according to the recommendations of the resin manufacturers), provided that the chemical resistance
is not adversely affected.
The max. out-of-roundness of the vessel or equipment shall be calculated according to AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 1,
section 2.14.
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
The max. deviation of the nozzle axis from the specified angle as well as of the rectangularity of the flange
o
sealing faces is 0.5 . The flange sealing faces shall be sufficiently even to ensure that tight connections can
be obtained with the specified seals without exceeding the permissible deformation of sealing and flange ma-
terials.
For manholes and inspection openings, the min. dimensions as per AD 2000-Merkblatt A 5 shall be observed.
Nozzles of a nominal diameter of up to and including DN 80 are provided with nozzle reinforcement (conical
apron) (see UN 2002-03). The allowable nozzle loads shall be specified in the drawing. The min. nozzle loads
shall be in compliance with Table 6.
In considering forces and moments, it is to be assumed that these act simultaneously in all possible directions
at the transition between the nozzle pipe and the shell of the process vessel.

The inspections shall be performed on nozzle cut-outs. If no suitable specimens can be taken from the nozzle
cut-outs, the material specimens shall be taken from test pieces which have been fabricated simultaneously
with the actual component, and which must be equal to the component as regards fabrication, structure and
composition.
The nozzle cut-outs shall be marked with the location of the cut-out and be stored.
The nozzle cut-outs or the specimens fabricated simultaneously with the actual vessel or equipment must be
subjected to heat treatment together with the vessel or equipment.
4.3.2.1 Lining
Linings shall be tested on specimens according to DVS 2203-1 to -5 and on the completed component ac-
cording to DVS 2206. The quality of the welded joints shall be tested on welded specimens which have been
fabricated simultaneously according to DVS 2203-1 to -5.
The welds shall be subjected to a visual inspection and a leak test and the thickness of the lining measured
prior to the application of the laminate.
The welds of the lining shall be subjected to a further leak test after the component has been completed and
the pressure test carried out (DVS 2206).
When testing the welded joints for tightness by means of high voltage, by filling the vessel or equipment with
water or by using the halogen alkane method according to DVS 2206, no leaks or breakthroughs may occur.
Due to the risk of stress corrosion cracking, no wetting agent solutions may be used as leak indicators.
The test shall be performed by taking 10 readings with instruments as per EN 59 at one measuring point. The
mean value of the Barcol hardness shall be above 35 to 40 scale divisions depending on the resin. The two
highest and lowest readings shall be ignored for calculating the mean value. The test shall only be performed
on the outer laminate surface and on the inner laminate surface of cut-outs.
UHDE ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION
The pressure or leak test shall be performed with water. For additional requirements (e.g. gas pressure test)
refer to the DS.
4.4 Records
A report shall be prepared on the tests performed.

A Scope
The following examples apply to the design of vessels and equipment of UP-GF with and without lining. Prior
to order placement, the configurations to be used shall be agreed upon between orderer and manufacturer.
They do not constitute a substitute for the computational analysis. Special cases may require deviations here-
from and supplements hereto.
Note: This standard constitutes the first attempt to prepare a collection of typical configurations in the field of
designing vessels and equipment of UP-GF. This standard does not claim to be complete. It is requested that
Krupp Uhde GmbH, dept. standardization be informed of the experience gained when applying these con-
figurations in practice. Any proposals for expanding this standard should likewise be directed to the above
address.
B General notes
B1 These typical configurations do not constitute fabrication documents.
B3 For reasons of stability and fabrication, nozzles shall not have a diameter of less than DN 50.
B4 The instructions for the configuration of joints for vessels and equipment of UP-GF without lining also
apply if a lining (e.g. rubber-lining or duroplastic lining) is subsequently added.
B5 The design of welded joints for thermoplastic linings shall be selected according to DVS specification
2205, Part 3.
B6 Wall thickness s4 equals the max. dimension which results from either the calculation of the crimps or
from the calculation of the thickness of the overlaminate for the connection between cylinder and
head (s2 + overlaminate).
B7 The calculation of the length of the overlaminate with Da ⋅ S 4 and Da ⋅ S A corresponds to AD specifi-
cation N 1 and constitutes the min. length of the overlaminate.
B9 The technical delivery specifications according to UN 2002-01 Part 1 and UN 2002-02 Part 1 apply as
regards requirements and tests performed on vessels and equipment of UP-GF.
B 10 The inspection glasses provided on vessels and equipment fabricated according to this standard shall
be designed according to DIN 28121.
B 11 The representation of the individual layers of laminate s2, s3, s4 etc. does not permit any conclusions
to be drawn as regards the sequence of fabrication.
B 12 Up to DN 600, the companion flanges shall be provided in the form of a collar with loose flange.

1 Scope
This Uhde standard applies to the transport and erection of vessels and tanks of glass-fibre-reinforced plastics
on the basis of unsaturated polyester resins (GRP), with and without liner. It also contains specifications for
the design of the foundations and catch basins.
2 General
Transport and erection may only be performed by the vessel/tank manufacturer or by contractors who are
experienced in this field and who have at their disposal suitable equipment, facilities and transport means as
well as adequately trained personnel. The relevant rules for the prevention of accidents shall be observed to
prevent any hazards for the personnel and third parties.
The contractor shall take the necessary precautions to prevent damage to the vessels/tanks during loading,
transport, unloading, temporary storage and erection. When selecting the location for installation, care shall be
taken to ensure the stability of the vessel/tank.
3 Transport instructions
3.1 Preparations for transport
The vessel/tank shall be cleaned prior to dispatch. In particular, all traces of mould release agents, fibres,
dust, etc. shall be removed. All nozzles and openings shall be temporarily closed or covered in order to pro-
tect the flange faces and to prevent the ingress of foreign matter. However, care shall be taken to ensure that
air can continue to enter the vessel/tank without any obstruction.
The vessel/tank shall be prepared for transport in such a manner, e.g. by reinforcing structures (racks, girders,
braces), that no impermissible distortions and vibrations occur during loading, transport and unloading. It is recom-
mended that the lifting points for large vessels/tanks be indicated in a loading sketch. The loading area of the transport
vehicle shall be of the type that prevents damage to the vessel/tank by concentrated impact or pressure loads.
3.3 Transport
During transport, the vessel/tank shall be held in place by suitable means to prevent impermissible shifting.
Continued on pages 2 to 4
Date Prepared Date Checked Date Approved
The vessel/tank shall not become damaged by the fixing means used.
During periods of frost, vessels/tanks which are provided with a thermoplastic liner (especially PVC) shall only
be transported if special measures are taken.
4 Erection
4.1 Foundation and catch basin
The bearing strength of the subsoil within the area of the foundation or the catch basin shall be uniform. The
foundation shall be of rigid design.
In the case of horizontal vessels/tanks, the bases for the steel saddles shall be spaced as specified. They
shall be of the same height and level. The coating (paintwork) or lining, which might be required for sealing the
catch basin, shall be complete, i.e. it shall also be provided underneath the vessel/tank. In the event of any
leakage’s, the sealing materials shall be resistant to the stored fluid for a period of at least three months. If
leakage’s can continually be expected due to the operating conditions concerned, sealing materials shall be
selected which are permanently resistant to the fluid stored.
In flood areas, the vessels/tanks shall be erected in such a manner that they can neither be washed away nor
become damaged when empty.
In the case of vessels/tanks used for the storage of liquids which are detrimental to the groundwater, a sealing
layer of at least 2 mm thickness (e.g. plates of PE or PVC) shall be provided between foundation and interme-
diate layer. The sealing layer shall project on all sides up to a height of min. 100 mm above the vessel/tank
bottom (see Figure 1).
4.2.2 Assembly
The vessel/tank shall be lifted by the crane lugs or holders provided for this purpose and raised into the verti-
cal position. When assembling the vessel/tank outdoors, the vessel/tank shall be protected against wind loads
by means of an anchoring structure according to the approved drawings. An anchoring structure might also be
necessary for vessels/tanks to be installed in buildings.
Suitable measures shall be taken to ensure that the entire surface of the vessel/tank bottom rests on the in-
termediate layer. This can, for instance, be achieved by filling the vessel/tank with water up to a level of ap-
prox. 1000 mm. When fastening the anchoring structure, the nuts shall be tightened to such an extent that no
impermissible constraints occur-on the vessel/tank. The nuts shall be secured by lock nuts
4.3.2 Assembly
The vessel/tank shall be lifted horizontally by means of suitable lifting gear and gently deposited at the speci-
fied location. It may either be delivered according to transport type A, i.e. with the saddles fastened to the

beam can be dispensed with if horizontal suspension of the vessel/tank is ensured. Only straps of adequate
width shall be used ((slinging wire ropes or chains around the vessel/tank is not permitted).
First, the steel saddles shall be placed on the prepared bases at the specified spacing. Thereafter, the ves-
sel/tank shall be lowered by means of a carrying beam and straps as shown in Figure 3 and placed on the
steel saddles. In the case of short vessels, the carrying beam can be dispensed with if horizontal suspension
of the vessel/tank is ensured. Only straps of adequate width shall be used (slinging wire ropes or chains
around the vessel/tank is not permitted).
The position of the steel saddles shall be corrected and the saddles fitted into the marked areas of the ves-
sel/tank immediately before the vessel/tank is finally deposited.
Alternatively, plugs may be used In this case. the instructions of the plug manufacturer shall be observed.
4.4 Miscellaneous
When connecting other items (e.g. piping) to the vessel/tank, constraints shall be excluded. Care shall be
taken to ensure that, apart from the loads (e.g. caused by railings, walkways, ladders, etc.) which have been
taken into consideration for the design, no other external loads can additionally affect the vessel/tank. An ad-
ditional support shall be provided for all attachments (e.g. agitators, platforms), which cannot be supported by
the vessel/tank due to their load.
It shall not be possible to shut off ventilation lines. Care shall be taken to ensure that the size of the ventilation
lines is adequate and that the lines are in proper condition. Vessels/tanks which are not installed in catch ba-
sins shall be provided with a start-up protection device.

Reference standards .........................................................................................................................................................22
1 Scope
This Krupp Uhde standard applies to the tests/inspections of process vessels and equipment (hereinafter
referred to as process vessels) made of glass reinforced thermosetting plastics:
1)
a) with a highly resinous core sheet (chemical coating resistant to chemicals)
b) with a liner of thermoplastic plastics, such as
• polyvinyl chloride rigid (PVC-U) of normal impact strength
• polyvinyl chloride rigid (PVC-HI) of raised impact strength
• high-density polyethylene (PE-HD)
• polypropylene (PP) homopolymer and copolymer
• polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)
The standard describes manufacturing deficiencies in order to facilitate inspection and assessment of the
process vessels with due consideration for graduated quality requirements specified in categories.
The implementation of the Krupp Uhde standard and the measures required for fulfilment are governed by
applicable statutory regulations, generally accepted technical standards or laid down in general specifications.
2 Requirements
2.1 Duty class
The customer shall specify the quality acceptance level on the basis of the three categories stated below to
clearly define the scope of quality assurance requirements, especially referred to the technical production
quality, to be fulfilled by the engineering company and the manufacturer:
I. High hazard potential or high requirements for availability
The plant operator shall select one of the above three categories with due consideration for the following crite-
ria:
• Feedstock:
toxicity, flammability, aggressiveness, water hazard, operating temperature, change in temperature
• Type of stress:
(e.g. static or dynamic)
• Operating conditions:
(e.g. constant or alternating)
• Materials and material combinations:
(e.g. properties, known behaviour, references)
• Manufacture:
(e.g. in the workshop, on site, manufacturing processes)
• Sophisticated design/engineering:
(e.g. difficult machining/shaping, large volume, number of nozzles and internals)
• Monitoring of component and operating conditions:
(e.g. systems for regular, large and automatic internal monitoring)
• Failure effects:
(e.g. health hazard, environmental hazard, economic effects)
3 Tests/inspections
The conditions specified for the above-mentioned categories shall be substantiated by visual inspection,
measurement and, if required, by adequate non-destructive or destructive testing. Only prefabricated compo-
nents shall be subjected to testing.
Certain properties shall be evidenced by destructive testing of nozzle sections or test specimens (e.g. compo-
nents fabricated in simultaneously) to be manufactured under identical conditions. The date, method and
place of testing shall be agreed by the customer and the manufacturer. The testing results shall be recorded.
