I. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Alcohol use among students is a significant concern. It is linked to various

negative consequences that affect mainly the quality of learning and the behavior of a

student. This includes the decline in academic performance which has been a serious

problem to health. Instead of spending their time on the class, homework activities, or

assignments, it turns out that they have much time on drinking alcohol which is not a

good example to students.

According to Mekonen 2017, alcohol is the third leading preventable risk

factor for the global burden. As it was reported, 7.6 and 4% of deaths were attributed

to alcohol among males and females, respectively. It is due to the misuse of alcohol

that leads to alcohol dependence or alcohol addiction. Thus, it was reported as the

strong predictor of students' mental health which it affects the student’s poor

academic achievement.

Moreover, several studies showed that drinking affects learning through a

variety of mechanisms. Mainly, it affect the student’s performance by reducing the

number of hours committed to studying and answering homework activities. Thus,

recent neurological research suggests that underage drinking can impair learning

directly by causing alterations in the structure and function of the developing brain

with consequences reaching far beyond adolescence (Brown et al., 2000; White &

Swartzwelder, 2004). Additionally, various negative effects of alcohol use can emerge

in areas such as planning and executive functioning, memory, spatial operations, and

attention (Brown et al., 2000).

In the Philippines, various reports have been shown to students who had a lack

and poor academic achievement. By which, researchers have found out that one of the

reasons is alcohol addiction. Due to the fact that young ones tend to misuse drinking

alcohol which leads to a serious addiction.

In Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, specifically at Brgy. 18-A, Lapak,

Gingoog City, numerous students had issues regarding drinking alcohol, usually high

school students. Which in turn, it affects the student’s health and behavior, especially

that today’s mode of learning is modular or online learning. Several reports have

shown that students missed their tasks in school due to having time on drinking

alcohol which leads to addiction at a young age.

With this regard, the researchers are prompted to investigate more on the issue

regarding the effects of alcohol addiction on students’ academic performance by

reducing no. of students prone to addiction.

Hence, this study is conducted to take action and to increase their awareness

about the use of alcohol which might trigger their health that leads to poor academic

performance.

The researchers identified the problem as sociological in nature as it denotes

social problems. Actions should be taken seriously, especially this concern to

students' health and behavior. This will eventually lessen the no. of students drinking

too much alcohol and address this issue immediately.

II. OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to know the Effects of Alcohol Addiction on

Students’ Academic Performance. And it aims to determine the following objective:

1. Identify the factors that are being affected when engaged in alcohol

addiction.

a. academic standing

b. self-confidence

c. time management

2. Lessen the numbers of students who is addicted to alcohol consumption.

III. INTERVENTION

Alcohol addiction affects the students’ quality of learning regarding the

student’s academic performance. As surveyed from 20 respondents, students are

prone to drinking alcohol which had an effect on their academic achievement and

health behavior. In fact, parents and counselors can help students to take actions by

having their time to follow up their children especially on their academic achievement

that is due to alcohol addiction, as one of the reason why students have low academic

performance. It has also been noted that most of the students were ages 14 to 20 and

were having a problem on their health and behavior. Hence, researchers have carried

out studies showing that there are interventions or ways to reduce alcohol use among

students in Brgy. 18-A, Lapak Gingoog City.

In relation to the study of Fried and Dunn (2012), the Expectancy Challenge

Alcohol Literacy Curriculum (ECALC), it was presented to reduce the no. of students

prone to alcohol. It is a single group delivered program that is designed to modify

alcohol use among students. Thus, researchers anchored this intervention as ways to

reduce the said issue. Further, researchers had planned to have a single group session

program to demonstrate the effectiveness of ECALC in reducing alcohol use by

assessing and making some follow ups among students within 1 week.

Moreover, parents, counselors and Brgy. Officials of Brgy. 18-A were involved

to made follow ups. This provides counseling services, specifically to put awareness

and have seminars in order to provide solution on solving the students’ problem when

it comes to academic performance. This method has significant positive benefits since

it reduces the risky alcohol use after a single session. To conduct this ECALC

method, researchers had planned a detailed information to effectively administer this

intervention by reducing no. of students drinking alcohol.

First, the researchers conducted a survey and an observation to students that are

involved to drinking alcohol by means of listing their names and ages after giving the

consent letter to the Brgy. Captain. Next, parents of the identified students were given

a letter regarding the implementation of the intervention among their children. After

that, parents are in charge to inform their children about the said intervention. Then,

those students were called to made some follow ups by the counselors and Brgy.

Officials within 1-week through seminar and an awareness by making some follow

ups on their academic performance. This way, it helped students to lessen drinking

alcohol.

IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Before raising the immediate yet well-organized process of intervention, the

research findings revealed that there are around twenty (20) students who were under

the condition of alcohol addiction. In the implementation of intervention, there was an

active involvement and participation of the students, parents, and Brgy. Council. For

this reason, positive results were observed.

In a span of one (1) week, according to the track record of Brgy. 18-A's council,

a gradual change has been observed after the implementation of the Project.

The group of researchers conducted interviews among the students residing at

Brgy. 18-A, Lapak, Gingoog City. After the data have been collected, it appears that

the students who participated in the research intervention are in the age of fourteen

(14) to twenty (20) years old. Half (1/2) of the students honestly revealed that

drinking alcoholic beverages and its kind is their way of coping up with the stress

they've been getting from school work and activities. Meanwhile, the rest of the half

(1/2) stated that they were addicted to alcohol for the reason that they were hanging

out with their friends who influenced them to engage in this inappropriate and

inadvisable course of action. Furthermore, most of the students broadly stated the

huge impact of alcohol to their; academic standing, confidence, and time

management.

Alcohol addiction also affects the cognitive aspects of the students which

compensates their academic standing. The students stated that they were neglecting

their studies for the reason that it became hard for them to process the lessons.

According to Brown (2000) as seconded by White and Swartzwelder (2004), recent

neurological research suggests that underage drinking can impair learning directly by

causing alterations in the structure and function of the developing brain with

consequences reaching far beyond adolescence. The alcohol they were taking made

them lazy to understand and comprehend the instructions of their school advisers and

teachers, in which in return, their grades are being affected and is compensated with

their actions.

Another point of the gathered data also showed that these students have been

experiencing emotional issues. They have stated that they were suffering mental

illnesses because of alcohol addiction. They have been overthinking a lot of things

that awfully contributes to their stress. And it turns out that alcohol addiction

decreases their level of confidence. Since their minds are consumed of overthinking,

they have come to a point where they can no longer be able to manage their time.

However, the process of intervention has a positive and advantageous impact

on the students. It was observed that the subjects are doing better in rebuilding

themselves. The students are still in the gradual yet effective process of changing and

developing their character and behavior with the guidance and supervision of their

parents. Furthermore, after the implementation of counseling services, seminars and

awareness, these students have been taught on how to control and discipline

themselves in order to avoid the risks of alcohol habitual intake. Rest assured that

there will be a continuous process of weekly observation and evaluation about the

execution of intervention.

According to the study of Wilhelm Hoffman (2013) as cited by Cohen 2015,

people with high self-control are happier than those without. The study discovered

this is true because the self-disciplined subjects were more capable of dealing with

goal conflicts. These people spent less time debating whether to indulge in behaviors

detrimental to their health, and were able to make positive decisions more easily. The

self-disciplined did not allow their choices to be dictated by impulses or feelings.

Instead, they made informed, rational decisions on a daily basis without feeling overly

stressed or upset. Despite what many may think, self-discipline is a learned behavior.

It requires practice and repetition in your day-to-day life.

V. CONCLUSION AND REFLECTION

Based on the above findings, the selected minors of Brgy. 18-A, Lapak,

Gingoog City are still in the process of overcoming alcohol addiction. With the

execution of intervention, there was a positive change being observed. As long as the

people know how to control and discipline themselves to firmly refuse and decline the

engagement and involvement of this problem or situation, it is possible to achieve a

set of goals, and that is to develop a behavior that is appropriate and suitable to the

ethical standards of the community. The nation has been experiencing a global crisis

in the present days, if people will cautiously comply with the norms and values of the

society, then the attainment of the country's betterment is not impossible.

The researchers would like to sincerely express their gratitude to all the

individuals who contributed to the research success. Without the participation and

contribution of each subject, the implementation of the intervention will not be made

possible. The researchers learned a lot before, during, and after the intervention. They

are grateful that they are able to help their co-youth who were under alcohol

addiction. After all, especially during this pandemic, in order to solve this problem

gradually, it highly requires an active hand in hand cooperation.

VI. RECOMMENDATION

The researchers successfully finished the study, with all the foregoing

analysis, interpretation, and conclusion of this study, the following are strongly

recommended for possible course of action.

1. The Barangay Officials to continue the said intervention to fully lessen the

numbers of students engaged in alcohol addiction in the future.

2. SK Officials must develop recreational programs for students to divert their

attention in drinking alcohol and focus on sports and the likes.

3. Future researchers can conduct a similar study and improve some flaws.

4. Future researchers can use a quantitative type of research.

5. Another research should be conducted as a follow-up study to investigate

further the effects of alcohol addiction on students’ academic performance.

6. Future researchers can use this study as reference.
