DEPARTMENT – PSYCHOLOGY
This test measures tweezer dexterity which involves the ability to coordinate finger movements
in performing fine manipulations. Tweezer dexterity generally require grasping, releasing or
manipulations of small objects in which the finger tips in primarily used. In this test, the subject
holds a pair of pairs of tweezer in his or her right hand and performs manipulation of small pins.
It consists of a shallow tray beside a metal plate in which there are 100 holes arranged in
ten rows, each row having 10 holes. One pin is placed in each hole. A tweezer is used to pick up
the pins. The subject picks up one pin from their tray at a time and places at a hole. He is told to
do the test as quickly as possible.
The score is the total time, in seconds, required to fill the 100 holes. The higher the score
the lesser the efficiency in performance.
METHODOLOGY –
AIM – To assess the tweezer dexterity of the subject using tweezer dexterity board.
PLAN- To administer O’Connor tweezer dexterity test and interpret the time scores with the help
of norms.
MATERIALS-
PROCEDURE –
Seat the subject comfortably at a table with the tweezer dexterity board placed in front of
him or her.
The tray containing more than a hundred pins should be placed on the side of the
preferred hand.
The subject is instructed to pick up one pin at a time with the help of the tweezer and
begin to fill the holes in the board beginning left for the right handed person and vice
versa.
The holes should be filled in row vise.
Note the time taken to fill in all the 100 holes. The time taken should be noted
accurately.
Subject is allowed to fill in two rows for practice. Only one trial is given.
INSTRUCTIONS-
“ Here is a board with room for pin in each hole using your preferred hand pick up with the
tweezer one pin at a time and begin to fill in from this row. Do not stop to pick up the pins that
fall down. Continue working till you fill in the last hole.”
PRECAUTION –
2. The subject with left hand as a preferred hand will begin from the right side of the board
3. Allow the subject to fill in 2 rows for practice before the proper test begins.
1. Score is simply the number of seconds lapsing between placement of the first and last pins.
2. Refer the time in seconds to O’Connor norms to locate the standard score. Check centile rank
for interpretation.
INDIVIDUAL DISCUSSION –
AGE – 18
RESULTS –
NAME TIME TAKEN (in TIME TAKEN (in NO. OF PINS FALL GRADE
min.) sec)
OBSERVATION –
The subject was nervous at the starting and was trying hard to keep focus while picking the pins
and putting them on place. But after she got comfortable and picked a trick, she was able to do it
without her hands shivering and effortlessly.
INTERPRETATION –
The subject took 381 seconds to complete the test. 6 pins fall from her while performing the test.
Her grade is D- which indicates the subject’s ability to coordinate finger movements in
performing fine manipulations was below average. Her performance was less efficient as the
number of seconds were higher.
GROUP DISCUSSION –
RESULTS –
GRADE = C-
INTERPRETATION –
The tweezers dexterity of the group is average because their grade is C- which means the
mean of the tweezers dexterity is 343 and the mean of the standard score is 5.14 that means
the activeness of the hand is normal or we can say that the ability to coordinate finger
CONCLUSION –
The tweezer dexterity of the individual as a group is average that is their grade is C-. It can be
improved to the level of above average by daily repetition of the same handy task in the
industries or we can say by training. Thereby, this test helps in finding out the capability or
activeness of an individual to perform a handy task like stamp collector, the tweezers in the
