PART II: ESSAY (50 points)

DIRECTION: Explain you answer in 5-10 sentences.

1. How do I understand myself? What led up to this self? (10 points)

2. How has the concept of the so-called ‘self’ changed over the centuries when human
nature remained basically the same? (10 points)
3. How would you describe yourself when you’re around your family? Friends? (20 points)
4. What social pressures help shape yourself? Would you have wanted it otherwise? (10
points)

Answers:

1. Take a solo vacation or at the very least a long period of relaxation alone. You'll need this
time to reflect on your own life, as well as the lives of your parents and any other family
members. Concentrate on this and don't let anything else distract you. There were no
gadgets present; only thinking. You'll know when you've found the answers you're looking
for. Keep in mind that no one else will be able to help you with this. Relax and take it all in.
2. Human nature is a notion that refers to the underlying dispositions and qualities that
humans are thought to have naturally, such as ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. The
phrase is frequently used to refer to the essence of humankind, or what it 'means' to be
human. This usage has been contentious since there is disagreement about whether or not
such an essence exists.
3. Message from my parents:
- ineffective
- devoid of feeling
- uncontrollable
- much too intelligent for his own good (Said verbatim to a psychiatrist by my mother, no
egotism here.)

Message from my cousins:

- amusing youngster
- obnoxious child
- on sometimes, over a brusque and frightening child

4. My personality was primarily formed by the societal pressure of compliance. I aspired to be

a one-of-a-kind individual. As a result, I made the decision to dance to the rhythm of my
own drum. I worked hard to avoid being defined by other people's labels. Because there is
a lot of societal pressure on achievement, I felt compelled to push myself to be the best I
could be.
