Chapter Three Tutorial

This document contains 7 questions related to induction motors. Question 1 asks about the synchronous speed, slip speed, per unit slip, and percentage slip of an 8-pole, 50Hz induction motor running at 735 rpm. Question 2 asks about the percentage speed and induced current frequency of a 6-pole, 50Hz motor running at 970 rpm. Question 3 asks about the speed and rotor emf frequency of a 6-pole induction motor driven by an 8-pole generator running at 750 rpm, with the motor having a 3% slip.

Question one

An 8-pole induction motor, the supply frequency was 50Hz and the shaft speed was 735 r.p.m. what
were the magnitudes of the following;

a) Synchronous speed.
b) Speed of the slip
c) Per unit slip.
d) Percentage slip.

Question Two

A 6-pole, 50Hz induction motor runs on load at a shaft speed of 970 r.p.m. calculate the following;

a) Percentage speed.
b) Frequency of induced current.

Question Three

An 8-pole generator runs at 750 r.p.m and supplies power to a 6-p0le induction motor which has at
full load a slip of 3%. Calculate the full-load speed of the induction motor and the frequency of its
rotor emf.

Question Four

between the slip-rings on open circuit. Calculate;

a) the current and power factor as standstill when the rotor winding is joinedto a star-
connected external circuit, each phase of which has a resistance of 10Ω and an inductance
of 0.04H. the resistance per phase of the rotor winding is 0.2Ω and its inductance is 0.04H.
also
b) the current and power factor when the slip –rings are short-circuited and the motor is
running with a slip of 5%. Assume the flux remain constant.

Question Five

The rotor of a 6-pole, 50Hz induction motor is rotated by some means at 1000 r.p.m. calculate:

a) rotor voltage
b) rotor frequency
c) rotor slip
d) torque developed
e) can rotor rotate at this speed by itself?
Question Six

respectively.

a) Find the speed at maximum torque.

b) The value of the additional rotor resistance per phase required to develop 80% of maximum
torque at starting.

Question Seven

The resistance and reactance per phase of the rotor of a 3-phase induction motor are 0.6Ω and 5 Ω
respectively. The induction motor has a star-connected rotor and when the stator is connected to a
supplyof normal voltage, the induced e.m.f between slip rings at standstill is 80V. calculate the
currentin each phase and the poer factor at starting when:

a) The slip-ring are shorted,

b) Slip-rings are connected to a star-connected resistance of 4Ω per phase.
