03 Ch2 UX Design Process - Intro

The document outlines the key activities in the user experience (UX) design process. It discusses 8 main phases: 1) Strategy, 2) Research, 3) Analysis, 4) Design, 5) Production, 6) Beta Launch, 7) Evaluate, and 8) Launch. The Research phase involves learning about users, competitors, and the market. In Analysis, insights from research are analyzed. Design involves creating prototypes. Production adds high-fidelity details. Beta Launch tests the product with users. Evaluate incorporates user feedback. Launch releases the final product. The goal is to iteratively improve the user experience based on user research and feedback.

User Experience Design Process

WDMM 1407 - Design Fundamentals and User Experience

Dr. Tamer Madi

Learning Objectives

• To introduce the process of UX design

• To describe the key activities of the process of UX design

• To practice the process of UX design

WDMM 1407 - Design Fundamentals and User Experience 2

Why we need a process?
• Process is a guiding structure.

• Process offers reliability and consistency.

• Process provides scaffolding for learning.

• Process provides a shared conception of what you are doing.

UX Process
• Without a process, it is impossible to make design decisions.

• You will go so far before you realize that you have missed something critical or made a false
assumption.

• UX designers follow a user-centred design process.

• Following the UX design process does not just give users an intuitive and pleasurable
experience—it poses an opportunity for designers to iterate and improve their designs.

Strategy

2. Research
• Before you get started with any project, you need to get the basics down first.
3. Analysis
• Building a strategy for designing the user experience. It includes the following:

4. Design
– Product goals?

5. Production – Users’ goals? their key problems?

– Steps?
6. Beta Launch – What is the product? physical or digital?

– Is it possible to reach to the users?

7. Evaluate
– Budget?
8. Launch – Schedule?

1. Strategy

2. Research
Research
• Often referred to as the Discovery phase.
3. Analysis
• The Research phase is key to creating an informed UX.

4. Design
• It includes three types of studies:

5. Production – Users Study

• Interviews, Surveys, Field Study, Dairy Study, Task Analysis, Usability Testing, .. etc.
6. Beta Launch
– Competitors Study
7. Evaluate • Company Profile, SWOT Analysis, Features Audit, .. etc.

– Market Study
8. Launch • Business Model

Analysis Research phase.

• The main ideas of the product are clarified.

4. Design
• It includes the following activities:
5. Production
– Information Architecture
6. Beta Launch • Card Sorting

– Persona
7. Evaluate – Customer Experience Map
– Task Analysis
8. Launch
– Use cases and Scenarios

1. Strategy

2. Research
• The Design phase is collaborative and iterative.

3. Analysis • The Design phase is to put ideas in front of users, get their feedback, refine
them, and repeat.
4.4.Design
Design
• These ideas may be represented by:
5. Production
– paper prototypes (Sketches),
6. Beta Launch
– interactive wireframes,
– or semi-functioning prototypes.
7. Evaluate
• All created in low-fidelity to delay any conversation relating to graphic identity,
8. Launch branding or visual details.

1. Strategy

2. Research
• The Production phase is where the high-fidelity design is fleshed out.
3. Analysis • Content and digital assets are created.

• A high-fidelity version of the product is validated with stakeholders and end-users

1. Strategy

2. Research
• The comments and suggestions of the users are taken and the product is improved.

3. Analysis • The main activity here is the Usability Testing.

4. Design • Some additional questions you might ask yourself:

– Where did our process go right? And why?

5. Production
– Where did we struggle? And why?

6. Beta Launch – How are our users responding to the product?

– Did the product solve their issues and pain points?

7. Evaluate
Evaluate
– Where can we improve the product?

8. Launch – What lessons can we take away from this process for future products?

Key UX Team Roles
• Researcher
• A person who does research activities such as data elicitation, data analysis and modeling, and UX
requirements specifications.
• UX designer
• A person who does UX design, such as design creation, conceptual design, and/or design production for
user interaction. Also called interaction designer.
• Graphic or visual designer
• A graphic designer is responsible for visual communication, branding, and style, eventually in pixel-perfect
visual “ comps. ”
• UX analyst
• A person who does UX evaluation. Often, in small teams, the same person may perform the duties of
