Modern Band Syllabus

Mondays and Wednesdays 8:00-9:25

Fridays 8:00-8:55

Director: Mr. Brayden Smith

Purpose/Mission Statement:
Cultivating a sense of community, responsibility, and passion
through the art of music.
Overview and Objectives of the Modern Band Class

The modern band class is a fine arts class meant to cultivate a more
contemporary passion for music in an informal setting. The current
world of music covers a vast range of styles and sounds any where from
classic rock, J-pop, rap, or country music. This class is designed to
channel student’s personal interests in music into a way for them to
create an informal experience and musical community within the
classroom. We will be looking at different areas of contemporary music
from around the world and find ways to appreciate and explore how this
music affects our society.

Objectives include:
• Create a musical community that participates in globalized and
open-minded discussions.
• Explore different areas of contemporary music from around the
world.
• Develop projects and presentations that show an appreciation and
respect for a diverse range of music.
• Learn performance skills that enable the students to effectively
share their ideas with an audience.
Expectations Inside and Outside of the Classroom:

Music – Students are expected to share in the discovery of new

literature, terms, and expression. Each student should learn the core
principles of their technique and musicality but are also responsible for
bringing their unique expression to share with their cohort.

Performance and Practice – Students are expected to devote adequate

time to their development as musicians and students. Students should
come prepared, with the intent to work as an ensemble and individual to
achieve success. While perfection is an unattainable goal, we must give
our best in both practice and performance to display the potential of our
ensemble and individuals.

Communication – Students are expected to communicate all concerns or

areas of importance with the director. Using proper forms of
communication and proper procedures ensures that the director and
administration can offer the best service to the students and their
concerns.

Attendance – Students are expected to regularly attend all rehearsals and

events. All exceptions must be communicated and cleared by the
director. Consequences for unexcused absences are up to the director’s
discretion.

Procedure – Students are expected to follow all procedures outlined in

print or verbally by the director. To ensure efficient classroom progress,
students should come prepared for all rehearsals and events.
