SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Sixty Seconds After We Die

1. Describe your initial impressions after reading Luke 16:19-26.


2. Why were the Pharisees surprised by the role reversal between the rich man and
Lazarus?
3. What does this Bible story teach us about what happens sixty seconds after we die?
What surprises you the most?
4. What is Hades? How does it differ from hell?
5. How does this story help you prepare for eternity?

The Father’s Big House

1. Read John 14:1-6. Explain the context and why this teaching from Jesus was
important to the disciples. Why were they troubled?
2. What did Jesus mean when he said, “In my Father’s house are many rooms”? What
does it tell is about heaven? (see also Revelation 21:15-17)
3. Explain the cultural connection between a Galilean marriage and Jesus’s teaching
about His Second Coming.
4. Why do you think the disciples were confused about where Jesus was going and
how to get there? How did Jesus clarify things for them?
5. Read John 14:6 and discuss its implications in light of today’s culture.

Heaven and the New Jerusalem

1. Read Revelation 21:1-5. Describe what the Apostle John saw.


2. According to 2 Peter 3:4-7, how will the old earth pass away?
3. Why is God making a new heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem?
4. Read Revelation 21:3 and discuss the implications of the phrase, “Behold, the
dwelling place of God is with man.”
5. From Revelation 21, name and discuss the seven things Pastor Ron identified as
missing in heaven.

Imagine There’s a Heaven

1. What did Beatles legend John Lennon want us to believe about heaven? Use this to
discuss the broader cultural understandings of the afterlife you hear about today.
2. How does John explain the size of heaven? What are the implications of heaven’s
spaciousness?
3. In what way is heaven a welcoming place?
4. How did John describe the beauty of heaven? Philosophically and theologically, how
does beauty point us to God?
5. Read Revelation 22:3 in several translations of the Bible. Discuss the connection
between worship and work in the eternal state.

What Jesus Said About Hell

1. Do you believe hell exists? Why or why not?


2. Discuss the meaning of these various terms related to eternal punishment in the
Bible: Hades, hell, Gehenna, tartaros, lake of fire.
3. Describe what an unbeliever can expect in hell? How does that make you feel?
4. What is annihilationism? Why does the Bible not support this idea about the eternal
fires of hell?
5. Discuss Pascal’s wager and the implications for all who consider their own mortality.
