Applications of The Motor Effect
Applications of The Motor Effect
effect in a loud speaker, and the principles of physics on which a loudspeaker works. Include
a labelled diagram with your summary. Include 5 sources in your Bibliography.
Answer the following questions after your report:
1. Explain how the pitch of the sound produced by a loudspeaker is changed.
2. Explain how the volume of the sound produced by a loudspeaker is changed.
3. You have used your sound system on very loud settings and it has developed a
buzzing noise when it is switched on. given that this is a problem with one of
your speakers, explain what has happened, what caused the buzzing noise, and
how you might eliminate it.
Summary
● The motor effect is used to create vibrations causing the
cone shape in a speaker to produce sound.
● With the current travelling back and forth, sound waves are
created which causes the vibrations to be present
● The vibrations are present because the sound waves
bounce back and forth crashing into one another and
producing a pitch and a dynamic level.
● The shorter the wavelength means, the higher the vibration
is which relates to a high pitch level.
● The longer the wavelength means, the lower the vibration
is which relates to a low pitch level.
● When relating to a loudspeaker, the loudness is affected by the vibrations caused by the
motor effect producing sound waves, this means that in a loudspeaker, the motor effect
will have to be at a more rapid rate to produce a higher pitch and larger to produce
greater loudness.
Questions
Sound travels in longitudinal waves which create vibrations travelling back and forth affecting
neighbouring waves. The higher the frequency of the wave the more it vibrates and the more it
affects neighbouring waves causing the pitch to fluctuate to a higher pitch, this also works the
same going down, the less frequency the less the waves vibrate and the lower the pitch
becomes. This also relates to wavelength the shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency
meaning the higher the pitch and the longer the wave length the frequency is less creating a
lower pitch.
Loudness or dynamics is referred to by the amount of energy present in the wave, the more
energy means that more sound is produced, and less energy means less sound is produced.
This is also related to amplitude, the bigger the amplitude, the bigger the sound, and the smaller
the amplitude the smaller the sound.
Buzzing noises are created when the speaker is on a loud enough setting that even without a
sound output, the vibration from the motor effect is still present, this is not seen in less efficient
speakers as the vibrations are only bale to be heard at a loud setting especially seen in guitar
amplifiers and bass amplifiers.
