Take note of these statements as we go along with our lesson.
EXPLORE
Mathematics is rich in statements but these are not common statements you encounter every day.
These statements differ from the ones in communication. Some are best confirmed by arguments and experiments.
Mathematical statement is a sentence which is either true or false. For example, “The square root of 6 is 3” is a
mathematical statement (which is of course, false). Communication in mathematics requires precision than any other
subjects. Sometimes language in math is slightly different from the way we communicate every day.
MATHEMATICAL LOGIC
Logic is the systematic study of valid rules, proofs, thinking, or inference. Logic allows us to analyze if the
statement or proposition is a declarative sentence that is either true or false, but not both.
Examples in engage lesson, you were asked to identify if the statements are true or false.
1. 2 is an odd number (true)
2. 2+1 is equal to 4 (false)
3. 2x+1 is equal to 5 (cannot be determined)
The last example is not a proposition because the answer is not determined.
Truth values: T for true; The truth value of a proposition is true.
F for false; The truth value of a proposition is false.
