IMPACT OF SMARTPHONES
One technological advancement that has had a significant impact on society is the development
of smartphones. Smartphones are mobile devices that are capable of making phone calls, sending
text messages, accessing the internet, and running various applications. They are an evolution of
the cellular phone, which itself was an improvement on landline telephones. Smartphones are
built on several foundational technologies, including the development of the integrated circuit in
the 1960s, the creation of the first cell phone in 1973, and the invention of the World Wide Web
in 1989. The combination of these technologies has allowed for the creation of a device that is
capable of connecting people from all over the world in real-time.
The impact of smartphones on society has been significant. They have transformed the way
people communicate, work, and entertain themselves. With a smartphone in hand, individuals
can stay connected to loved ones, access information instantly, and work remotely. Smartphones
have also made it possible to shop online, book travel arrangements, and order food delivery
with just a few taps on the screen.
However, the proliferation of smartphones has also created new challenges for society. One
challenge is social isolation. With the rise of social media and online communication, many
individuals find themselves spending more time interacting with screens than with other human
beings “Students and business owners must be careful about the use of cell phones. It can cause
problems in their families, friendship groups, and relationships with customers.”
(Mrarslan(Socially Disruptive)). This leads to feelings of loneliness and depression. Another
challenge is addiction. Studies have shown that the constant notifications and updates from social
media apps can trigger dopamine responses in the brain, leading to a desire for more screen time.
This addiction can be particularly problematic for young people. “In the morning, several people
wake up and check their phones first. You’re one of them? Yeah, indeed, that’s how important
our smartphone is. It’s the first thing we look at before we say a friendly “Good morning” to
everyone around us.” (Tiwari and Poutintsev). Finally, the spread of misinformation and fake
news is another challenge associated with smartphones. The ease with which false information
can be shared online has led to a rise in conspiracy theories, disinformation campaigns, and
propaganda. This misinformation can have serious consequences, from influencing elections to
fueling public health crises.
In conclusion, the impact of smartphones on society has been both positive and negative. While
they have made it easier for people to connect with one another, access information, and work
remotely, they have also created new challenges for its users. To maximize the benefits of
smartphones while minimizing their negative effects, it is important for individuals to be mindful
of their own screen time and to use these devices responsibly.
