If you want to begin and learn as you go, you can click on the createanewlibrarylink.AlibraryisthenameforanEndNoteindividualfilesthatyouwillpopulate withyourreferences.Youcancreateasmanylibrariesasyouwant,oneforeachproject.Ifyouhavea numberoflibrariesanddecidethatareferenceyouhaveinonelibrarycanalsobeusedinanother,itis simplyamatterofopeningeachlibraryanddraggingthereferencefromonetotheother.

Anewwindowwillappear.ThisisthecontentofyourEndNoteLibrary.Thisiswhereyouwillsaveyour citationsforyourresearch.
Youcannowentercitationseitherthroughsearchingadatabaseordirectlyimportingthereferencesor bymanuallyeneteringthereferences.
TheEndNoteInterface
ThisiswhattheEndNoteinterfacelookslikeonceyouhavecreatedalibraryandenteredsome references.

Thewindowontheleft(3)tellsyouhavemanyreferencesinthelibraryandanygroupyou mayhavecreated. Inthemainwindow(4),youcanscrollthrougheachreferenceandsortthroughthembased uponauthor,year,title,journalorreferencetype. The window at the bottom (5) shows how the reference highlighted will appear in the referencefileyouhavechosen.Thedefaultstyleisannotated.
Above is an example of a completed reference in your library. You can simply type the appropriateinformationintothefieldsor,youcanimportreferencesfromononlinedatabase
like MEDLINE. Notice the Reference Type (1). This example is a journal article. It would be formatteddifferentlyifthetypewereabookoraconferenceproceeding.Itisagoodidea toincludetheabstract (2)inthereference.Youcanalsotypeinyournotesorincludequotes fromthearticlerightinthereference.Ifyouhaveacopyofthearticleinpdforword,youcan linkthereferencetothedocumentrightinEndNoteandbringitupwheneveryouwish.More tofollowonthat! UsingEndNotewithWord EndNote works seamlessly with Word. Once you have installed EndNote, you should have an EndNote menu within Word itself. You can use cite while you write or "CWYW to insert citations from EndNote into your document. FindFullText IfyouhavecitationsinEndNoteyoucanhighlightallyourreferences,thanclickonReferences> FindFullText.IftextisdownloadedapaperclipwillappearinthelistingofyourReferences. This will automatically search the full text subscriptions that UMDNJ holds and insert the full textpdfintoeachcitation.Ifarticlesareonlyavailableinsubscriptiondatabases,thisfunction will only work if you are using a computer with a University IP address. It will not work off campus via EZ Proxy. Articles freely available can be retrieved from any computer with an Internetconnection.Thisfeaturecanbeglitchyattimes.Themorecitationsyousearchfor, thelongerittakestoretrieveandattachthepdfarticleifitisavailable. ReferencesinwhichfulltextisdownloadedwillbeaddedtoatemporaryFullTextGrouponthe leftsideofthepage.FullTextwillberetrievedforonlyaportionofthearticleswhichyoucan accesselectronically.IfEndNoteisunabletodownloadthefulltextofanarticleitmayinserta link in the URL field of the reference. They will lack the paper clip icon that appears in the recordwhenfulltextisdownloaded.ThelinkinsertedintheURLfieldwilltakeyoutotheweb page for the article. From there you may be able to download the full text and attach it manuallytoyourreference. Groups There is a new Groups items on the EndNote menu bar. It gives access to the Hide Groups/ShowGroupscommand.TheGroupspaneattheleftoftheLibrarymainwindowhas beendividedintofivecategories: TemporaryGroups(Allreferences,Searchresults,ImportedReferences,Trash,etc) CustomGroups(Createdbytheuser) SmartGroups(seebelow) OnlineSearch(seebelow) EndNoteWeb(totransferreferencetoorfromEndNoteWeb) BesuretocheckwhichgroupyoucurrentlyhaveselectedintheGroupsPane.Functionsyou performwillonlyapplytothatGroup.Ifyouwantchangestoapplytotheentirelibrary,you mustselecttheAllReferencesGroup.
Smart Groups are groups that you can set up with an inbuilt search strategy. When new referencesareaddedtotheLibrary,theyaresearchedbyeachofthesmartgroups.Iftheyfit theparametersofanyoftheSmartGroupssearch,theyareautomaticallyaddedtothatgroup. TosetupaSmartGroup,eithergotoGroups>CreateSmartGroup,orusetheSearchfunction, andclickontheOptionsbuttonandselectconverttoSmartGroup.
SmartGroupscanbeusedasTemporarylocationforreferences,whichcanthanbemovedinto anormalCustomGroup.ThereisnofacilityformovinganungroupedreferenceintoaSmart Group.ReferencescanonlybemovedintoCustomGroups.ASmartGroupandaCustomGroup canhavethesamenames. OnlineSearchGroups AnyconnectionfileswhichyouaremarkedasfavoriteswillbelistedintheOnlineSearchgroup intheGroupspane.Youcanclickonthenameoftheconnectionfiletolaunchitquickly.The searchisperformedintheTabPane.Youspecifyhowmanyreferencesyouwanttoretrieve, andthesereferenceswillbedisplayedinthemainpaneoftheLibrary.Theseareautomatically addedtoyourlibrary.
Just be aware the automatic adding of retrieved references to the library can be extremely cumbersome. EndNote is currently working on patch to fix this feature. A useful feature is
eliminate duplicates. To activate this feature click on Edit > Preferences and select duplicates.UnderOnlineSearchResults,checkthebox,AutomaticallyDiscardDuplicates. Folders A major change in the X2 versions of EndNote is the location of the Filters, Styles and Connectionsfolders.ThelocationofthesefolderscanbeseenbyclickingonEdit>Preferences >FolderLocations.
InearlierversionofEndNote,thesefolderswere,bydefaultstoredwiththeEndNoteProgram Files. This caused some problems especially with users of Vista. In EndNote X2, the user has personalfolderswhicharelocatedat c:\DocumentsandSetting\[UserName]\MyDocuments\EndNote\(WindowsXP) c:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\EndNote(WindowsVista)
Newormodifiedfiler,stylesorconnectionarestoredinpersonalfolders.Ifyouwanttosavea filter, style or connection which you have downloaded from the web, or been sent by a colleague,youmustsaveitinyourpersonalfolder. Ifyouareeditingafilter,styleorconnectionfiltersuppliedwithEndNote,youcannotsaveyour changes unless you have selected the personal folders in the Folders Location of the Preferences.IfyourfolderlocationsarestillpointingtotheProgramFiles,youwillnotbeable tosavethechanges,andyouwillnotreceiveanyerrormessageexplainingwhy. This may cause some confusion for experienced users who are upgrading from an earlier version of EndNote. The Preferences are carried over from the earlier version; their Folder LocationswillstillbepointingtotheProgramFiles.Theeasiestwaytofixthisistogotothe PreferencesandselectFolderLocations,thenclickontheEndNoteDefaultsbuttontosetup thelocationforthepersonalfolders. CompressingtheLibrary Youcancompressyoulibraryeasilytosaveittoajumpdriveortoemailit.Thisfunctioncanbe donebyclickingonFile>CompressLibrary> Librarieslargerthan4gigabytescannotbecompressed.
