Module 3: First Voyage around the world by Magellan by Antonio Pigafetta

Rajah Humabon’s existence
 The term Rajah was coined to an Indian Sanskrit assimilating to the word Datu. Rajah, is
A king or prince in India. a minor chief or dignitary. an honorary title conferred on
Hindus in India. Philippine has its own precolonial writing system called Baybayin or
mistakenly known as Alibata into different accounts. In this case, Why would the native
would use a Sanskrit term to address Rajah Humabon. There were differences between
the two. With the presence of the Datu itself, the highest position in a hierarchy. How
come there were Rajah on the same island?
 I do believe, there is only a warchief, which theoretically, known as Datu Lapu Lapu.
Further, there is no official record of Humabon’s existence before the Spanish contact in
1521. The existing information was written by Magellan's Italian voyage chronicler,
Antonio Pigafetta on Humabon and the indigenous Philippine peoples that existed prior
to Spanish colonization.
 Given the claim that, there is no proper civilization in the island of Panay. In this case,
Miguel Lopez de Legazpi only became the first governor of the Captaincy General of the
Philippines and the founder of the cities of Cebu in the year 1565. Which later reveals
ranking, position, or hierarchy in society. The so called “Rajah” which is equivalent to a
King or prince of the community is contradicting on the recorded journal or account of
Pigafetta.
 The origins of Rajah Humabon prior to the arrival of Magellan. According to Visayan
folklore, he descended from a native royal family who practiced Hinduism which ruled
Cebu. When we say Folklore, it might be assimilated to mythology. It can be just the
traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations
by word of mouth in the Visayas island or region.
 Magellan have only insisted there was a conversation between him and the so-called
prince or ruler of the island. Contrary to that, there is an existing language barrier, and the
indigenous people or the natives can’t understand their language. Emphasising Indio’s
were “mangmang” or unclutured. Since in the first place, Spaniards didn't want them to
and magically kept it secret so that it would somehow stop a revolt. This is of course the
logic of attributing whatever action to some sort of evil hidden intention of the coloniser.
