2.2 Educational approach
In the dynamic world of business, technology plays an integral part in ensuring organisational competitiveness.
In this module we focus to align these leaning outcomes and content with what is required in the world of
Business Management. We expose you to flexible learning principles that spells “fun to learn”.
In this module we intend to integrate technology as a support mechanism in teaching and learning through a
flipped classroom and collaborative learning approach. It is an ideal and tested method that will trigger your
interest in Business Management. This module will form a solid foundation to support your future studies and
ultimately your career. Therefore, your success in this module requires responsibility from your side to attend
all the lectures and to participate and complete the required activities by the given deadline and expected
standard. The mode and fast pace of delivery, in essence, places enormous responsibility on you, the student,
but not in such a way that complete instruction is removed from the classroom. The activities for OBS 114
include:
Adaptive reading + quiz + group work. When we start with a new unit in class you have to complete the
adaptive reading exercise throughout working on the specific unit. A quiz in preparation for the semester test
and exam will be written the Friday before each semester test, excluding the sick test. All the above mentioned
activities will contribute towards your semester mark so make sure that you take note of the deadlines
provided in the study guide and on Blackboard. We will give you enough time to complete the exercises so no
extension for any reason will be granted.
We will facilitate formal in-person lectures for OBS 114. You have three formal lectures for OBS 114 per week.
The theory discussed in class will be derived from your textbook. Lectures are equipped with providing content
rich contact sessions on the most important and most complex parts of the chapter. This might mean that we
do not discuss the whole chapter in class although you still have to study that for the semester tests and the
examination and therefore place an additional responsibility on you to consult with our tutor in time if you
need additional assistance with certain outcomes. You will also receive a copy of all the presentation slides in
PDF format on ClickUP to assist you with your preparation for the semester test and the examination. The
formal lectures will be recorded and uploaded onto ClickUP.
The group assessment is an exciting journey that all lectures and students will look forward to in OBS 114.
Groups are given opportunity to start working on the presentation from the first week in the semester up until
the presentation. All chapters are incorporated into the presentation in live time, ensuring repetition of the
theory in in groups. The dynamics of group assessment involve students working together to achieve a
common goal, which requires effective communication, collaboration, and coordination. It also provide
numerous benefits such as improved critical thinking skills, increased creativity, and enhanced problem-solving
abilities.
This teaching approach emphasizes the importance of teamwork, leadership, and communication skills in
achieving organizational goals. This approach aligns with key concepts in Business Management such as
organizational behaviour, leadership, and strategic management. The approach is also consistent with the
broader trend in business management towards more participatory and team-based organizational structures.

5 Grievance procedures
5.1 Undergraduate students
- All issues should be reported in writing, providing details of the complaint or issue.
- It is imperative that the procedure outlined below be followed meticulously if the matter is to be resolved
as quickly and efficiently as possible:
a) The student should first consult the lecturer concerned about the complaint or issue. If the matter is,
however not resolved, the student should consult the class representative (The primary function of the
class representative is to serve as a two-way communication channel between the class and the lecturer.)
b) If the matter remains unresolved the student should consult the module co-ordinator in the case of large
module classes with multiple lecturers.
c) Where the co-ordinator is unable or fails to resolve the matter, the student should consult the
d) Head of Department/Centre/Institute.
e) Should the matter remain unresolved, the student may approach the Dean of the Faculty.
f) Student matters should be resolved at Faculty level. However, should the above steps fail to bring about
a resolution, the student may refer the matter to the relevant member of the Executive. In the case of an
academic matter, it should be referred to the Vice Principal: Academic. Other matters may be referred to
the Registrar or another relevant functionary.
g) Only in exceptional cases, where no resolution has been reached through the above processes, and as a
last resort, the matter may be escalated to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal. The Vice- Chancellor and
Principal’s decision in any such matter will be final.
Important:
The Head of Department and Dean of the faculty will
only engage students and issues once the proper
protocol was followed.
Only after all the above steps have been followed and
the matter remains unresolved, the matter may be
escalated to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, whose
decision will be final.

6.1 Sick test or sick examinations
In the event of absence from a semester test or examination due to illness or work-related circumstances that
prevent you from writing the test or the examination, you have to submit a doctor’s note or a letter from your
employer to the first years OBS 114 email.
The doctor’s note or letter from your employer will be used in order to consider you for the sick test or sick
examination. The test or examination cannot be re-written in order to try and improve your mark. The fact
that another test or examination is written on the same day is not considered as a valid excuse for writing the
sick test or sick examination.
Often students will go to the doctor after they have recovered. The doctor then writes a medical certificate
stating: “I was informed that the patient was sick”. According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa
such a medical certificate could be refused. Therefore, the Department of Business Management has decided
that such medical certificates will NOT be accepted. Furthermore, NO affidavit or declarations in respect of
any other reasons for absence will be accepted.
7 Communication
Announcements pertaining to OBS 114 will be posted on ClickUP. As such, it is assumed that you will read all
such messages. Check ClickUP and your email regularly.
All interactions between the module lecturer and students are subject to the codes of conduct for both staff
and students. All interactions (spoken and written) should be polite, to the point and factually correct. Angry,
rude, incomplete, factually incorrect and longwinded emails or comments will be ignored.
Students should not start and/or spread misinformation regarding any matter in this module. Unless a lecturer
had posted information on ClickUP and/or announced something during a lecture, it should be regarded as
misinformation (a rumour/half-truth).
All operational/assessment queries students may have about the module after they had read the study guide
and listened to any additional remarks by the lecturer (during lectures), should be directed to directly
[email protected]
The class representative only represents students if a lecturer needs to be approached to ensure that any
concerns/complaints are addressed. In other words, the class representative does not have “inside
information” about assessments, academic content or administrative arrangements.
8 Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a serious form of academic misconduct. It involves both appropriating someone else’s work and
passing it off as one’s own work afterwards. Thus, you commit plagiarism when you present someone else's
