 Choose an appropriate pre-lesson activity that suits pupils’ needs/interests and that will review language and/or

vocabulary and prepare the pupils for the lesson.

 Ask pupils to read the instructions and check that they understand what they have to do.
 Make sure pupils understand what linking words are and how they function by asking a strong student to name some or
by providing some yourself.
 Pupils work individually to find the linking words in paragraphs 2 and 3.
 They then check their answers in pairs before checking as a class. (Student’s book p15 Activity 5)

 Ask pupils to read the instructions and check that they understand what they have to do. Elicit that they must decide if
the linking words are formal or informal.
 Explain to pupils that they should not use formal language in informal writing and vice versa.
 Remind pupils that linking words are necessary to make a piece of writing flow.
 Pupils work individually to complete the task.
 They then check their answers in pairs before checking as a class. (Student’s book p15 Activity 6)
LESSON 
DEVELOPMENT 3.
 Read the task out to pupils and explain anything they don't understand. Elicit that they must write an email.
 Ask pupils the following questions in order to analyse the task:
Who has sent you the email? (my penfriend Tim)
What does he have to do? (a project for college)
Why are you replying? (to give him information)
What is the main thing you have to write about? (my normal family routine at home)
What points do you have to include? (meals, housework, how we spend leisure time together as a family)
What relationship do you have with the person You are writing to? (my penfriend)
Is a formal or informal writing style best? (informal)
 Go over the Plan with the pupils. Stress the importance of introducing the paragraph topic and using linking words to
make the email flow.
 Ask pupils to write short notes for each paragraph and go round checking as they write.
 Assign the writing task for homework. (Student’s book p15 Activity 7)
 Ask pupils to complete an exit card: ‘what went well in your writing?’ and ‘your writing would have been even better if…’
POST-LESSON  Collect the cards and use them for planning subsequent lessons.
