Chapter 11 Orgdev

Engineer Aisporna leads his department with an autocratic leadership style, expecting subordinates to follow orders without question. This style has led to high efficiency but low morale, as subordinates feel undervalued and hesitant to work overtime without additional pay. To influence his people, Engineer Aisporna should utilize his expert power to explain the importance of additional work and provide guidance. A behavioral approach would be most appropriate, as focusing on adapting his leadership behavior could improve subordinate performance and productivity affected by his current angry and disappointing responses.

build positive workplace culture, foster innovation, and promote growth and success.
Effective leaders are able to motivate and inspire their employees, build strong
relationships, manage change, promote innovation, and develop future leaders.

b. Use persuasion techniques: Persuasion techniques, such as presenting a compelling
argument, using evidence and statistics to support your points, and appealing to
emotions, can be effective in influencing others.
c. Use social proof: People are often influenced by the actions of others. Providing

5. Cite scenarios where each of the skills a manager should be applied.

Technical Skills Suppose you are a manager in a software development

company, and your team is responsible for developing a new
software application for a client. As a manager, you must have
a solid understanding of the technical requirements of the
project, the programming languages used, and the tools and
technologies required to develop the software.
Human Skills Let's say two team members are in conflict over a project's
direction and have been unable to resolve their differences on
their own. As a manager, you can use your human skills to
mediate the conflict and help both parties find a mutually
agreeable solution.
Conceptual Skills Suppose a manager is leading a team responsible for
developing a new product line for their company. The manager
needs to use their conceptual skills to assess the market
trends, identify the target customer segments, and analyze the
competitive landscape to determine the product's unique
selling proposition.

6. Distinguish behavioral and contingency approach from leadership.

- The behavioral approach focuses on the leader's behavior, while the contingency
approach emphasizes the importance of adapting the leadership style to fit the
situation. While both approaches contribute to our understanding of leadership, they
have different implications for how leaders should approach their role and interact with
their followers.
SUGGESTED ITEM FOR RESEARCH
Identify a manager of your choice. Describe his leadership style. Are there important changes
that have to be made to improve his style? What are those? List down the proposed character
changes applicable.

The manager of my choice is Jerome Carera, he is the manager of the sales team in a
manufacturing company nearby. Jerome is known for his authoritarian leadership style, where
he makes all the decisions and expects his team to follow his directions without questioning.
The important changes that have to be made to improve his style are the ff:
a. Develop active listening skills: Jerome needs to actively listen to his team members'
opinions and ideas, acknowledge their perspectives, and give them feedback on their
work. By doing so, he can build a positive relationship with his team members and gain
their trust and respect.
b. Encourage team participation: Jerome needs to encourage his team members to
participate in decision-making processes, provide feedback, and share their ideas. By
doing so, he can create a sense of ownership and responsibility among his team
members, which will increase their motivation and engagement.
c. Adopt a coaching approach: Jerome needs to adopt a coaching approach to leadership,
where he provides guidance, support, and feedback to his team members. By doing so,
he can help his team members develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence, which
will improve their performance and job satisfaction.
d. Celebrate successes: Jerome needs to celebrate successes and acknowledge his team
members' contributions to the team's achievements. By doing so, he can create a
positive work environment, boost team morale, and increase motivation.
By implementing these changes, Jerome can improve his leadership style and create a positive

Learning Assessment
1. Examine and discuss the leadership style employed by Engineer Aisporna.
- Engineer Aisporna's leadership style can be described as autocratic or directive. He is a
stickler for discipline and personally imposes penalties on employees who commit even
small mistakes. He also expects his subordinates to follow his orders without question,
as evidenced by his surprise and anger when they do not immediately agree to work
overtime without additional compensation.
2. Cite reasons for Engineer Aisporna's ineffective leadership style.
- Engineer Aisporna's leadership style has resulted in high efficiency and minimal wastage
in his department, it also has some negative effects. His autocratic approach can lead to
low morale and motivation among his subordinates, as they may feel undervalued and
not trusted to make decisions. This could explain why they are hesitant to work
overtime without additional compensation, even if it means keeping their jobs during
slack seasons.
3. Assess which power should Engineer Aisporna utilize to influence his people to follow
accordingly.
- Engineer Aisporna should utilize his expert power as a licensed mechanical engineer and
the head of the production department. He can use his expertise to explain to his
subordinates the importance of accepting the additional orders and working on them on
overtime. He can also provide guidance and support to his subordinates on how to
efficiently and effectively accomplish the tasks required by the additional orders.
4. Based on your evaluation, propose the more appropriate approach between
behavioral and contingency. Explain your choice.
- Based on the given scenario, the more appropriate approach to use is the behavioral
approach. This is because the focus of this approach is on the behavior of the leader
towards his subordinates, and how this behavior affects their performance and
productivity. In the given scenario, Engineer Aisporna's behavior towards his
subordinates is becoming a hindrance to their willingness to work overtime. His anger
and disappointment towards his subordinates' response can negatively affect their
motivation to work and can lead to a decrease in productivity.
