Using the Moodle Mobile app to access the AuthorAID

course from your mobile device

Installation and setup
Look for the Moodle Mobile app on the Google Play Store (if you use an Android phone or tablet) or
the App Store (if you use an iPhone or iPad).

Install the app and open it. You will see an option to add a site. Enter the site address of INASP
Moodle: moodle.inasp.info

Enter your username and password for INASP Moodle on the page that follows 1. Note – you might
not be able to reset your password from the app. If you have forgotten your password, reset it from
the homepage of INASP Moodle by accessing it from a browser (an internet browser on your
computer or phone).

1
If you already use this app to access another Moodle site, look for the main app settings and click ‘Change
site’. Then click the + button to add a new site. Don’t worry – you won’t lose access to the existing site. You can
access multiple user accounts on different Moodle sites using the same app!

Once you login to INASP Moodle, you can see the list of courses you are enrolled in. Click the course
you wish to access. You can then access any of the course sections and materials that are available. A
screenshot of a course section is shown below.

What you can do using the Moodle Mobile app

The Moodle Mobile app has a lot of features; we point out some of these below.

1. Go through the lessons in the course. When you open a lesson, it will automatically resize to
fit the size of your display. You may want to click the ‘Menu’ link once to hide it and access
the content without having to scroll down too much. You can then use the ‘Previous’ and
‘Next’ links to go back and forth.
2. Attempt the quizzes.
3. Read and write posts on the discussion forums.
4. Download the lessons and quizzes to access them when you are offline! For example, if
you’re going to be doing field research in a place with poor Internet connectivity, you can
download the lessons and quizzes beforehand to work on these when you are offline.
Further instructions to download the course materials for offline use are given on the next
page.
5. Receive notifications of upcoming deadlines and events
a. Go to the app homepage, click ‘Calendar events’, and access the settings by clicking
on the top right hand corner to customise notifications. You can set notifications up
to a day in advance of deadlines/events.
6. Remain logged in to the course without the obligatory timeout of 2 hours that applies to
browser access. You can access the course anytime from the app without having to login
every time.

What you cannot do using the app

The app does not support all activity types in Moodle. For example, surveys (or feedback forms) and
peer assessment activities are not supported in the app. Please access these using the browser on
your computer or mobile device. If you access an unsupported activity in the app, you will be given
an option to access your device browser. You will then have to login to INASP Moodle from the
browser, because the app and browser are not linked. You may complete surveys or forms from your
mobile device browser, but we recommend that you use a computer for any writing or peer
assessment activities in your course because intensive writing or referencing may be required.

Mobile device browser as an alternative to the app

Of course you may use the internet browser on your mobile device instead of the app to study on
the course. You will however not be able to enjoy the advantages of the app, such as easy access to
the course anytime without needing to login, the ability to download the course materials for offline
use, and notifications of upcoming deadlines.

Offline access to course materials using the app

One of the most useful features of the Moodle Mobile app is the support for offline access. You can
download the below kinds of resources and activities from the AuthorAID course using the app.

- Lessons
- Quizzes
- Forums
- Documents
- Pages with text (not videos)

To download a resource or activity, look for the cloud icon next to it and click it. If there is no cloud
icon, it means that resource/activity cannot be downloaded. See the screenshot on the previous
page. Can you identify which items can be downloaded?

After you have downloaded a resource or activity, the cloud icon will no longer appear next to it.

The downloaded item is stored inside the app – you don’t have to worry about how to access it.
When you are offline and want to access a resource/activity you have downloaded, just click on it
and it will open! If you try to access offline a resource/activity which you have not downloaded
beforehand, you will see an error message.

The offline capability of the app works best for the lessons in the course.

You can download the quizzes as well and attempt them offline, but you will not be able to see your
score or review your answers until you are online again. When you get online, the app will
automatically submit your quiz attempt. After this synchronisation, you can see your score, review
your attempt, make further attempts, etc. depending on the quiz settings. Where a quiz has a time
limit, you cannot download it for offline use.

You can also download whole forums and read the posts offline. You may be able to write your own
posts when offline but you may not be able to post them until you are online.
Note: after accessing the course in offline mode in the app, the app might not automatically detect
when you are back online. In this case, close the app fully and re-open it.

Moodle Desktop app

If you would like to enjoy the Moodle Mobile experience on your computer, check out the Moodle
Desktop app: https://download.moodle.org/desktop/. It offers the same functionalities as the
mobile app for your computer! This might be useful if, for example, you don’t necessarily want to
study on your mobile but you want to download the course materials for offline use, as explained
above.
