CES522 A 04 - Topic 2b - 2. RC Beam Design - Examples234 PDF

This document provides details for designing the beams of an office building, including: 1. The building has concrete slabs with a minimum thickness of 125mm and permanent loads of up to 5.325 kN/m^2. 2. Beam BM2 is designed as a continuous 3-span beam, with a proposed size of 200x500mm and design load of 33.04 kN/m. 3. Three critical sections of BM2 are designed for bending reinforcement: the end span requires 838mm^2 of reinforcement, the interior support requires 1584mm^2 in two layers, and the interior span requires compression reinforcement is not required.

A typical floor plan for an office building is as

shown. The building is assumed to be subjected 7200 8400 7200

to only vertical load.

(lateral loading is insignificant)

3500
Design specification:

7000

3500
Building exposure class XC3 2400

structural class S4
fire resistance 2 hrs

5000
fyk = 500 N/mm2; fck = 25 N/mm2 2800 2800 2800

Permanent actions, gk:

• ceiling & services = 1.00 kN/m2 2400

• slab finishes = assume 50mm thick concrete

6000
• brick wall = 2.6 kN/m2 (for 120 mm thick)
Variable actions, qk: refer to Table 6.1 & 6.2 of
BS EN 1991-1-1: 2002
Floor height, H = 3000 mm Full height brickwall sitting on beams:
A/5-8; 5/A-B; 8/A-B; C/5a-7a and BM5
Most of the beam loadings are transferred from the supported slabs.
It is important to obtain all permanent action and variable action acting on the slabs.

For these examples, we assumed all the slabs have been analysed and designed.

To start the beam design process, we are going to estimate thicknesses for the slabs supported by
the beams in this examples here:

Slab S5 and S5A: continuous one-way (one end span and one interior span)
end span: use 30 → l/h = 30 → h = 110 mm
interior span: use 35 → l/h = 35 → h = 100 mm

Fire requirement: Table 5.8 EC2 Pt1-2

R120 → hmin = 120 ➔ hence min thickness for slabs in this plan = 120 mm

➔ we propose h = 125 for S5 and S5A

Loading on slabs:
gk: SW = 0.125 x 25 = 3.125 kN/m2
Finishes = 0.05 x 24 = 1.2 kN/m2 (50 mm thick; material - concrete)
ceiling = 1.0 kN/m2
gk ,total = 3.125 + 1.2 + 1.0 = 5.325 kN/m2
qk: Office = 2.5 kN/m2 (Table 6.1 & 6.2 EC1: category B; 2.0 – 3.0 kN/m2)

Cover:
Durability – XC3; S4 → cmin = 25 mm
Bonding – separated (assumed bar diameter 16 mm – 25 mm) → cmin = 20 mm (assumed mostly H20)
Fire (2 hrs) – bmin = 200 & a = 45 (Table 5.6 EC2 Pt1-2)
→ cmin,fire = 45 – 10 – 20/2 = 25 mm (assume link = 10 mm)
➔ Cmin to be used = 25 mm
➔ Cnom = 25 + 10 = 35 mm (cdev = 10 mm)

Minimum beam width for this plan = 200 mm

Example 2: Design of beam BM2
Beam BM2: continuous 3 spans (7.2 m , 8.4 m, 7.2 m)

Use uniform beam height, h for all the 3 spans.

Try l/h = 16 (end span); l/h = 20 (interior span) → h = 7200/16 = 450; h = 8400/20 = 420
→ Propose h = 500 mm; b = 200
➔ Beam size = 200 x 500

Loading on beam:
• SW of beam
gk = 0.2 x 0.5 x 25 = 2.5 kN/m
• Slab S5 and S5A on one side of beam (both are one-way slabs: ly/lx > 2.0):
gk = 5.325 x 3.5/2 = 9.32 kN/m
qk = 2.5 x 3.5/2 = 4.375 kN/m
• Brick wall with 3 m height
gk = 2.6 x 3 = 7.8 kN/m

➔ gk,total = 2.5 + 9.32 + 7.8 = 19.62 kN/m; qk,total = 4.375 kN/m

(This beam: similar values for all spans)

provisions stated are fulfilled:
