DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROURKELA

End-Semester Examination, Spring 2019
CE 6234 / CE 628: Prestressed Concrete
Class: MTech 2nd Sem/ B.Tech 8th Sem CE Duration: 3 hrs Max. Marks: 75

Instructions: (1) Answer all questions (2) Assume any missing data after stating it clearly (3) Two pages
(4) Provide neat sketches wherever necessary (5) Use of IS 1343 is permitted if available

1. a) The evolution of stresses in steel in 10

prestressed concrete beam are shown in figure.
i) Identify the x-axis labels: Load D, Load
E, Load F, Load G.
ii) Also identify the stages
B,C,D,E,e,F,f,F1,f1,G,g.
iii) Explain this evolution of stress in steel.
iv) What structure does the line joining
origin and point g refer to?

b) Explain the Magnel’s method for determining vertical stress, direct stress and shear stress in 5
the anchorage zone of an end block with appropriate sketch and relevant equations.
2. a) A cracked beam is shown in the figure. 6
Identify the failure modes represented by labels
A, B, C, D. Using the concept of principal
stresses(and appropriate equations), explain
why each of these cracks form.

b) Distinguish between web compression failure and arch rib failure. What provisions are 4
provided in design codes to prevent these failures?

c) You are working as structural consultant for 5

1km tall Jeddah tower. You are interacting with
the architects and want to explain the concept
of creep and stress relaxation to them in a
simple manner. Use the physical models given
in the figure to explain these concepts.

3. A post tensioned prestressed beam of rectangular section 300mm wide is to be designed for an 15
imposed load of 10 kN/m, uniformly distributed on a span of 10 m. The stress in concrete must
not exceed 15 N/mm2 in compression or 1.5 N/mm2 in tension at any time and the loss of
prestress may be assumed to be 15%. Calculate
a) The minimum possible depth of the beam
b) For the section provided, the minimum prestressing force and the corresponding
eccentricity.
c) For the section provided, write the four inequalities corresponding to Magnel’s method.
Sketch the four lines on e(units:mm) vs A/P(units: mm2/kN ) plot and indicate the region NEXT

of design feasibility.

4. A prestressed concrete beam of size 450 mm x 800 mm is subjected to following service load 15
conditions bending moment M=350 kNm, shear force V=150 kN, torsional moment T=150 kNm.
It is prestressed with an effective force of 1000 kN acting at an eccentricity of 200 mm. Area of
prestressing steel is 940 mm2. Design the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement necessary
as per I.S specification to resist service load forces in the section using IS 1343 code
recommendations. Assume cover of 50 mm, cubic compressive strength fck=40 N/mm2, yield
strength of normal reinforcement fy=415 N/mm2, ultimate strength of prestressing steel is
fpu=1600 N/mm2. Take fpe/ fpu=0.6 in Vcr calculation.

5. a) A pretensioned beam of 8m span has a symmetrical I-section. The flanges are 250 mm wide 8
and 50 mm thick. The web thickness is 100 mm and the overall depth of girder is 450 mm. The
member is prestressed by 8 wires of 5 mm diameter located on the tension side such that the
effective eccentricity is 90 mm. The initial stress in the wires is 1400 N/mm2 and the cube
strength of concrete at transfer is 45 N/mm2.
i) Determine the maximum vertical tensile stress developed in the transfer zone.
ii) Design suitable mild steel reinforcement assuming the permissible stress in steel as
140N/mm2.

 eVy 7
b) Derive the expression for flexural bond stress given as  b  for round wires, where
4I
V is shear force, I is moment of inertia of the cross-section, y is depth of steel from NA, Φ is
diameter of the bar, αe is the modular ratio.
