ELEC 3 12-SG-2 - 2nd Semester - Junio PDF

This document is a study guide for a module on aesthetics in bridge design. It discusses the importance of aesthetics in bridge design and how it should be prioritized higher in the design process. The study guide provides learning objectives that cover explaining the importance of aesthetics, comparing different bridge design qualities, and discussing qualities of aesthetic bridge design. It also includes sample learning activities for students, such as discussing qualities of aesthetic design, analyzing photos of bridges, and writing a reflective journal.

STUDY GUIDE FOR MODULE NO. 2

AESTHETICS IN BRIDGE DESIGN

MODULE OVERVIEW

A specialized professional course for civil engineering students in

structural engineering designed to understand the concepts, theories, and
principles in the design process of bridge structures.
This course deals with the structural analysis and design of modern bridge
structures. The course covers the study of influence lines and their application
to moving loads, applications of AASHTO and NSCP Volume 2 Specifications to
bridge design especially steel, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete
bridges, aerodynamics performance of bridges under wind loads, earthquake
response of bridges, maintenance, and rehabilitation.
This module will focus on the importance of aesthetics in designing bridges.

MODULE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this module, you will be able to,

1. Explain the importance of aesthetics in bridge designing.
2. Compare the different qualities of bridge design.
3. Discuss the qualities of bridge design.

Chapter 2 AESTHETICS IN BRIDGE DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

The conventional order of priorities in bridge design is safety, economy,

serviceability, constructability, and so on. Somewhere down this list is aesthetics.
There should be no doubt in an engineer’s mind that aesthetics needs a priority boost,
and that it can be done without infringing upon the other factors.
The belief that improved appearance increases the cost of bridges is unfounded and
oftentimes the most aesthetically pleasing bridge is also the least expensive. The
additional cost is about 2% for short spans and only about 5% for long spans. It is not
necessary that everyone agrees as to what makes a bridge beautiful, but it is important
that designers are aware of the qualities of a bridge that influence the perception of
beauty.

NATURE OF THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN PROCESS

The structural design process itself is probably different for every engineer
because it is so dependent on personal experience. However, certain characteristics
about the process are common and serve as a basis for discussion.
For example, we know,
(1) that when a design is completed in our minds, we must then be able to describe it to
others.
(2) that we have different backgrounds and bring different knowledge into the design
process; and
(3) that the design is not completely open ended, constraints exist that define an
acceptable solution(s).

AESTHETICS IN BRIDGE DESIGN

If we recognize that the conceptual design of a bridge begins in the mind, we only
need now to convince ourselves that the design we conceive in our mind is inherently
beautiful. It is our nature to desire things that are lovely and appeal to our senses.

Definition of Aesthetics
Aesthetics is the study of qualities of beauty of an object and of their perception
through our senses.

Qualities of Aesthetic Design

“There are not HARD & FAST rules or formulas for aesthetics of bridge design. It
finally gets down to the responsibility of each designer on each project to make
personal choices that will lead to a more beautiful structure.”

For further understanding of this topic, read and comprehend the module and for
further reading, read the book, Design of Highway Bridges: An LRFD Approach, Second
Edition. Richard M. Barker and Jay A. Puckett

LEARNING ACTIVITY 2

Read the module for chapter 2 and further read the book for more
reference. Then, answer the following questions,
1. List the four general stages of bridge design and give a brief description of each
one.
2. Describe how the design of a bridge begins in the mind.
3. Discuss the necessity of having the three “mentalities” present in the bridge
design team. Imagine you are a member of the design team and indicate what
abilities you think other people on the team need to have.
4. Explain what is meant by the following: “Whether intentional or not, every bridge
structure makes an aesthetic statement.”
5. Some of the qualities of bridge aesthetics are similar to the qualities of
classical music. Choose one of these qualities common with music and describe how
that quality can improve the appearance of bridges.
6. Provide 5 bridge structures (with picture/s) and discuss the aesthetic qualities
those bridges have.
7. Write a reflective journal for the topics discussed.
