The MAGNETOM ESSENZA utilizes a newly designed water-cooling system. The cooling
requirements of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA are somewhat lower than of other 1.5 T sys-
tems. This is mainly due to the reduced gradient performance. Please be aware that the
system needs water cooling even when in the “System off” status. The reason is the helium
compressor (MREF) for the cold-head cooling the magnet.

There are two versions of the Integrated Cooling System (ICS) available for the MAGNE-
TOM ESSENZA:
• ICS passive (standard) - this version requires primary cooling water provided by the
customer via an existing in-house cooling system or a purchased chiller.
• ICS active (optional) - with this option the customer is independent of any external
water cooling supply.
The secondary water circuit of both the passive and active version of the ICS is almost
identical.
Supplied Components 0
The ICS supplies the following components with cooling water (the so-called secondary
water circuit):
• in the ECA
Water Requirements 0
The primary water circuit provides cooling for the internal secondary water circuit.
Water Requirements 0
NOTE The primary water circuit of the ICS active has to be filled
with the glycol/water mixture from Siemens only!
A new ICS active is delivered with 75 l (plus additional 25 l for 40 m option) of glycol/water
mixture. Additionally, it can be ordered as a spare part in 25 l canisters.
1. Electronics module
2. Water cooling circuit
3. Helium compressor for the mag-
net (MREF)
4. Air conditioning system (ACS)
The photo below shows the water pipes of the ICS passive. The insulated part in the back
of the photo belongs to the primary water circuit. Therefore, the non-insulated part is the
secondary water circuit.
The numbers of the legend correspond to the numbers in the flow-diagram on the next
page.
1. Heat exchanger
2. Pressure sensor
3. Expansion vessel
4. Safety valve
5. Secondary water pump
6. Temperature sensor
7. Air bleeder
8. Pressure gauge
9. Solenoid valve
10. Flow sensor
11. Shut-off valves
12. Filling and drain valves
13. Strainer (not visible)
14. 3-way valve
The electronics module in the ICS passive cabinet is located at the top (1/Fig. 4 / p. 9).
It contains
• circuit breakers,
• contactors, and
• a printed circuit board (control unit)
to protect and control the active cooling system.
The ICS passive is supplied by 25 A circuit breaker F103 in the Mains Connection Box.
Using terminal X101, the 3-phase supply is connected to the ICS active electronics mod-
ule.
NOTICE The ICS is directly connected to the local power supply via
the Mains Connection Box.
Incorrect voltage setting can damage components! There-
fore, check and adjust the voltage setting of
¹ the helium compressor for the magnet (MREF) and
¹ the transformer T1 in the electronics module.
The four fans in the ACS are supplied by 230 V AC taken from transformer T1. Contactor
K2 is always energized. The possibility to de-energize the two fans (M13 and M14) is cur-
rently not being used.
Control Unit 0
The control unit is located on the right side of the electronics module. It controls and super-
vises the function of the cooling system and provides a CANopen communication link to
the measurement control of the system.
Its 24 V AC supply comes from transformer T1 via circuit breaker F2.

2. H3; red LED: normally off, indicating
no fault.
3. H2; yellow LED: normally off, indicat-
ing system OK. It is on during control-
ler restart.
4. H1; green LED: normally blinking,
indicating program active.

A-LEDs
Eight green input LEDs (E1 to E8) and eight green output LEDs (A1 to A8) indicate the
function and status of the cooling system.

E3 Not used
E7 Not used
E8 water flow to gradient coil OK water flow to GC too low or flow switch B11 broken
NOTE Please be aware that the meanings of the LEDs are different
on ICS active and ICS passive, even though the board is iden-
tical.
The photo below shows the water pipes of the ICS active. The insulated parts belong to the
primary water circuit.
The numbers of the legend correspond to the numbers in the flow-diagram on the next
page.
NOTE The coolant circuit is one FRU. The spare part will be deliv-
ered with a corresponding lifting device.
NOTE If the pressure on the suction side of either the primary (B7)
or the secondary (B5) water pump (2/Fig. 16 / p. 20) drops
below 0.5 bar, the cooling system is switched off. To reset
this error condition, you need to reach a static fill pressure of
at least 1.5 bar (hysteresis).
The electronics module in the ICS active cabinet is located right above the helium compres-
sor (MREF) for the magnet. (3/Fig. 13 / p. 18)
It contains
• circuit breakers,
• contactors, and
• a printed circuit board (control unit)
to protect and control the active cooling system.
ICS active is supplied by 50 A circuit breaker F102 in the Mains Connection Box. Using ter-
minal X102, the 3 phase supply is connected to the ICS active electronics module.
NOTICE The ICS is directly connected to the local power supply via
the Mains Connection Box.
Incorrect voltage setting can damage components! There-
fore, check and adjust the voltage setting of
¹ the helium compressor for the magnet (MREF) and
¹ transformer T1 in the electronics module.
The four fans in the ACS are supplied by 230 V AC taken from transformer T1. Contactor
K5 is always energized. The possibility to de-energize the two fans (M13 and M14) is cur-
rently not being used.
Control Unit 0
The control unit is located on the right side of the electronics module. It controls and super-
vises the function of the cooling system and provides a CANopen communication link to
the MR system.
Its 24 V AC supply comes from transformer T1 via circuit breaker F2.
1. CANopen connection
2. H3; red LED: normally off, indicating
no fault.
3. H2; yellow LED: normally off, indicat-
ing system OK. It is on during control-
ler restart.
4. H1; green LED: normally blinking,
indicating program active.
5. A-LEDs (Fig. 21 / p. 25)
6. E-LEDs (Fig. 22 / p. 26)
7. H4; red LED: Not used
A-LEDs
Eight green input LEDs (E1 to E8) and eight green output LEDs (A1 to A8) indicate the
function of the cooling system.
E-LEDs
Additional notes:
If E6 and E7 are off, there is a problem with the circuit breaker Q4.
If E6 is off but E7 is on, there is a problem with the EFU.
NOTE Please be aware that the meanings of the LEDs are different
on ICS active and ICS passive, even though the board is iden-
tical.
