Task1 (20%):

Theoretical and Practical Exercise: DC Motors

Shunt Motor

Figure 1 shows the circuit of a shunt DC motor/generator set.

Figure 1. A shunt DC motor/generator set

1. Set the supply motor voltage to 190 V DC. By varying the generator torque
from 0 to 3 N-m, record the following quantities in a table and plot the
generator torque: Speed, generator current, motor current, motor voltage and
generator voltage. Discuss and explain the results.
2. The percent change in speed from no load to full load is called "speed
regulation". It is computed by dividing the change in speed by the full load
speed. Compute the speed regulation for the DC shunt motor.

Speed (No load) − Speed (Full load)

% Speed Regulation = ∗ 100%
Speed (Full load)
3. As the load torque increases, did the motor's armature current increase in
inverse proportion to the motor's speed? Explain why this was or was not
expected.

Series Motor (Theoretical Exercise)

4. Sketch the Speed/Armature current and Speed/Torque characteristics of DC

series motor. Comment on the differences between DC shunt and DC series
motors.
Theoretical Exercise: Single Phase Induction Motor

5. Consider a single-phase induction motor with the following parameters:

Nominal voltage: 100 V, 4 pole, 50 Hz,

By varying the motor speed from 0 to 2,500 rpm, calculate the induced torque
against motor slip. Plot the graph and explain carefully the different operation
regions.

6. Having studied the characteristics of DC and AC Induction motor, which motor is more
applicable for electric vehicles? Explain.

TASK 2 Simulation (20%):

7. Design and simulate (on PSpice) cascaded H-bridge DC/AC multi level inverter which
can be used to drive the AC motor of electric vehicles. The total harmonic distortion
(THD) should not exceed 15% (before using any filters). You should decide how many
levels are required to achieve this THD.
