Consider an ocean in which at a depth of 7.5 km, the pressure is 75 Mpa. Assume a specific
weight at the surface of 10 KN/m 2 and an average bulk modulus of elasticity of 2.5 Gpa for
that pressure range. Find (a) the change in specific volume between the surface and 7.5 km
(b) the specific volume at 7.5 km and (c) the specific weight at 7.5 km. (Ans: = -0.0000294
m3/kg; 0.000951 m3/kg; 1051.5 kg/m3; 10315 N/m3)
A Plate at a distance 0.0254 mm from a fixed plate moves at 0.61m/s and requires a force of
1.962 N/m2 area of plate. Determine dynamic viscosity of liquid between the plates.
Two large surfaces are 2.5 cm apart. This space is filled with glycerine of absolute viscosity
0.82 Ns/m2. Find what force is required to drag a plate of area 0.5 m 2 between the two
surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s. (i) When the plate is equidistant from the surfaces (Ans: F=
39.36N), (ii) when the plate is at 1cm from one of the surfaces (Ans: F = 41N).
A glass tube of small diameter placed in an open reservoir of water induces capillary rise. To
what height above the reservoir level will water (at 20 °C) rise in a glass tube, such as that
shown in Fig. 2.7 below, if the inside diameter of the tube is 1.6 mm? (Ans: h=18.6 mm)
The change in volume of certain mass of liquids is observed to be 1/500 th of original volume
when pressure on it is increased by 5 Mpa. Determine the Bulk modulus and compressibility
of the liquid (Ans: Bulk modulus = 2.5GPa, Compressibility = 4 x 10-10 m2 / N).
