Lesson Plan Strategy 2

This Spanish lesson plan focuses on having 11th and 12th grade students analyze three key events from the novel "El Alquimista" by creating a social media profile for the main character Santiago. Students will brainstorm Santiago's characteristics and important events during a warm-up activity. Then, they will independently create an Instagram-style profile for Santiago that includes a short bio, profile picture, and three posts analyzing impactful events from the story. To assess understanding, students will write about their favorite theme from the book on an exit ticket sticky note. The lesson incorporates culturally responsive teaching by having students engage with social media, and universal design for learning through providing a structured template to guide analysis.

Beginning of the class:
10 min
- I will have Santiago's name on the board and ask students to come up and write one characteristic or
major event that shaped his journey
- As a class, we will discuss what we had written and get started with the lesson

The Lesson: Outline

I DO:
Ten minutes
- After reviewing some of the findings we had from our warm up and I will start with the lesson itself
- I will have my PowerPoint projected on the board where students will be able to see the objectives
and the lesson
- I will continue to explain what my expectations are and what they should have at the end of class
- Students will be creating a social media profile where they will explain 3 main events in
Santiago's life
- Students must include a 30-60 word bio and 3 “posts” analyzing three important events in the
character’s life (70-100 words)
- Students must use at least 2 quotes from the book and 3 images
- I will also be providing students with an example of what I’m looking for
- While I show the example I will briefly explain how I structured the posts
Updated January 2023
YOU DO:
- After providing the example I will direct students on where to find the template they will be using
(Google Classroom/Canvas etc)
- Students will be given the rest of the class time to work on their profile
- During this time, students may discuss with each other about different events and share ideas
- I will also be walking around to answer any questions and help with sentence structure/grammar
Closure: What will you do or say to close the lesson?
- For our exit ticket today, you will be writing down one theme that you will take away from the book
and why it was important
- This could be one that you decided to write about for your profile
- Once students are done they can stick it on the board on their way out
Procedural—
- I’ll be walking around to answer any last-minute questions and making sure desks and materials are
put back in their original spot

Lesson Plan Reflection (required):

1) Highlight Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) components within your lesson.
Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) elaborating on the intentionally planned CRT components of your
lesson. How did you leverage student assets, thinking, language, and cultural backgrounds to make
learning relevant while demonstrating high expectations for all students?
Many students use social media, and it’s become very popular. Adding this component will grab
students' attention and will allow them to have fun while still analyzing what they are learning. I would also use
this lesson plan when we are working with bigger texts such as novels and short books. This would mean that I
would use this for higher-level Spanish classes. Though it could also work with smaller texts and different
prompts.

2) Italicize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) components within your lesson.
Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) elaborating on the intentionally planned UDL components
(representation, action & expression, engagement) of your lesson. What strategies did you use to meet
the needs of ALL learners?
Like always I will have my presentation on the board where I will be discussing my expectations
and the objectives students will have. For this specific lesson, I have decided to use a template which
will help students visually write down their ideas. By providing this template, students can aslo find an
easier and more structured way to write notes. Sometimes students may find it difficult to analyze a
piece of text and write down their ideas, but by providing this template it will help minimize threats and
distractions.
