Contemporary dance developed during the mid-twentieth (20th) century

and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in
the U.S. and Europe.

Contemporary dance is sometimes considered a form of storytelling, and

dancers may use the medium to portray characters, replay events, or
convey personal stories.

Pioneers of Contemporary dance

She was born in San Francisco, California on May 26, 1877. An American
pioneer of dance and is an important figure in both the arts and history.
Known as the “Mother of Modern Dance”.

She pioneered the idea of natural movement, and danced barefoot,

dressed in short white tunics that shocked conservative society who
thought women should dress modestly. She was the first to reject ballet
and inspire others to find natural ways of moving.

Martha Graham

The creative force known as “Dancer of the Century.” She is considered to

be the most important dancer of the 20th century.

Martha Graham was one of the most famous dancers and creators of
dance, called choreographers. She brought modern dance to a new level
of popularity in American culture. She created a new language of
movement that expressed powerful emotions.
