Assignment 2 - SDOF Numberical Analysis and MDOF PDF
Question 1: (30%)
Perform a time-history analysis of a SDOF structure shown in Figure 1.1 using either Duhamel
integral with the trapezoidal rule or the step-by-step algorithm based on the linear acceleration
method. The structure is subjected to a ground motion shown in Table 1.1. The structure has mass
m = 30× 10! kg, stiffness k = 1500× 10" N/m, and damping ratio 𝜉 = 0.03.
Note: Perform the numerical analysis in Excel, and provide a print-out of your spreadsheet to
show it works properly. For this print-out, include a u(t) response plot along with the first 30 lines
of the solution (to t = 0.3s)

Question 2: (30%)
Consider a scaled-down shear building structure shown in Figure 2. All columns are made of the
section with 𝐼 = 3.7 × 10#$ 𝑚% and the mass of the first and second floor is 37.8 kg and 16.2 kg,
respectively. Neglect the mass of columns and assume the modulus of elasticity is 𝐸 =
2.0 × 10&& 𝑁⁄𝑚' .

Note: For Parts (f) and (g), you should use time from 0 to 0.05 sec in your plots.

spectrum in tripartite format is shown in Figure 3.2. Assume 5% damping for all vibration modes.

(c) Determine the total base shear force using SRSS method (6%),
(d) Determine the total overturning moment for the structure using SRSS method if the inter-
storey height of each storey is 5m (6%),

(f) Calculate the SRSS combined inter-storey drifts (6%),
(g) If you only included the first mode in the analysis, what percentage of the total structural
mass would be accounted for? (4%)
(h) To meet the requirement of the AS 1170.4, what is the minimum number of modes
required in the analysis? (4%)
