Assignment (Geotechnical Design I) PDF

This document provides instructions for a geotechnical engineering design assignment involving three tasks: 1) Design a combined footing to support four columns, with design data and column layouts provided. 2) Design a strap footing for two columns spaced 7m apart, with column sizes and load data given. Reinforcement of the strap beam must also be designed. 3) Finalize the design of an eight-strip flat plate mat foundation by designing the remaining vertical and horizontal strips, and providing a reinforcement detail sketch.

Assignment I of Geotechnical Engineering Design-I (For Civil 4th year)

Instructions:
Form group of maximum of three members and attempt all questions
The submission date would be on 26th April, 2023
You can possibly assume any missing data you think is reasonable

1. Design a combined footing supporting four columns as depicted in Figure 1.1 below.
Design Data
Design life 50 years
Exposure class =XC2
Unit weight of concrete=25 kN/m3
fck=35 N/mm2 fyk=500 N/mm2
Assumed bar  bar =16 mm
Safe bearing capacity = (150 + Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos) N/mm2
Table 1.1 Design data and layouts of the columns
Column Size(mm) Gk(kN ) Qk(kN )
250*300 850 700 + Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos
C1
250*350 1000 800 + Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos
C2
300*400 1100 900 + Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos
C3
300*300 500 320 + Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos

2. Design a strap footing for the two columns A and B spaced 7.0 m c/c as shown in Figure 2.1 below.
Column A is 300  400 mm and carries characteristic dead and imposed load of 500 kN and (300 +
Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos) respectively. Column A is on the property line.
Column B is 300  500 mm and carries characteristic dead and imposed load of 700 KN and [500 +
Average of the last digit of the three ID Nos] KN respectively.

NB: You should also include design of strap beam for flexure, shear design for shear link, crack
checks and reinforcement detail.

3. Finalize design of the flat plate mat foundation we discussed in class room. Design the remaining
eight strips of the mat (both vertical and horizontal strips). Eventually, sketch detail reinforcement of
the of the raft foundation.
