Search Engine
In the previous lesson we defined a search engine as an internet software
which helps people search or find information from millions of web pages on
the internet. Some of the famous search engines utilized here in the Philippines
are Google, Microsoft Bing, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, and Live Search.

To do a search, a user must navigate the search engine in the web browser.
Type a word or keywords of information you are looking for which is also called
as search terms, then click search or press enter on the keyboard.

How does a search engine work?

Search engine works through the following:

Web Crawler – Also known as a spider is a program used by a browser to visit
websites and reads their pages and other information to create entries for a
search engine index. When the crawler is building the list, that process is
called web crawling.

Index/Indexing – This software analyzes the copy of web pages the crawler
found or built. Indexing is organizing information before a search to enable
super-fast responses to queries.

Search/Searching – The process where finding through an index where users

input his query through words or keywords and the search engine returns the
result.

Techniques in using search engine to find information

1.Using a hyphen to exclude a word from searching, for example you are
searching for plants and you do not want to include medicinal. At the
beginning of the word put a hyphen like plants –medicinal

2.Placing quotation marks (“ “) around the desired search terms will narrow
down the search for example plants “flowering”

3.If searching for Specific Content most search engines have options or
menus for unique searches.

The anatomy of Uniform Resource Locator

Protocol/Scheme – (https) It determines how data is transferred between the
host and a web browser. It is the type of web address so the browser connects
to it correctly.
Domain name – (2ritannica.com) is the registered identification “string” (or
word/phrase) used by the Domain Name System to define a specific area of
control and website
Sub Domain – It is the portion of a URL that comes before the “main” domain
name and the domain extension. In www.britannica.com, www is the sub
domain.

Name System hierarchy. Examples are .com(commercial), .net(network),
.org(organization), .edu(education), .gov(government), mil(military),
.ph(Philippines), .ca(California), .uk(United Kingdom)
Path – Refers to the exact location of a page, post, or file.
